what i'm reading: the sword and the shield: the revolutionary lives of malcolm x and martin luther king jr.

When I read a review of The Sword and The Shield: the Revolutionary Lives of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr., I knew it was a book I'd been waiting for someone to write.  I despise the way Martin Luther King, Jr. has been sanitized and diluted for public consumption. The version of King that is widely celebrated is a pile of sentimental goo that the real King would not have recognized, let alone endorsed. King's radical legacy is reduced to a kind of bland "why can't we all just get alo...

The city my grandfather used to call home no longer exists – except in our minds

After his death, I wanted to know more about his life, and the city that made him and very nearly killed himEvery Hanukkah through my childhood, if I was visiting my grandparents’ Liverpool home, my Grandpa Oskar told me the exact same story. With a pickle on his side plate – my grandma serving up his favourite dinner of latkes, vusht (smoked sausage) and eggs – he’d recount the night during this very Jewish festival in 1937 that his family – our family – fled for their lives from the Nazis. The ...

Walking with an Iris

Since the lockdown Gabriel and family have spent most their time with us. I am happiest when I am with this Baby Love. Today we walked along the path picking flowers and smelling rosemary, thyme and marjolaine. Baby Love picked an iris for his maman slowly as we reached home all the petals were gone except one.                  [Author: French la Vie]

Parasol demi-lune

Now that the weather is getting nicer (we got up to over 21ºC, almost 70ºF, on Friday), we're using the deck a little more. We're still expecting the renovation work to get under way sometime this spring, so I haven't put the table and chairs out yet. But I'm grilling and enjoying sitting out there a little. And, I put out the new umbrella. The new umbrella on the deck. Ken likes the way it matches the emerging red maple leaves. Like I mentioned before, it's half an umbrella, or half-moon, mad...

The Public, Cammeray

The Public in Cammeray is a pub on Miller Street in Cammeray. While the location has had several iterations (a Belgian beer cafe one of them) it has new owners and offers a cut-above pub style food at reasonable prices with great burgers, schnitzel and a divine beef cheek ragu rigatoni.
