what i'm reading: sometimes you have to lie: the life and times of louise fitzhugh, renegade author of harriet the spy

Until very recently, I didn't know anything about Louise Fitzhugh and had not thought about her at all.  Of course, as a child I read and loved Harriet the Spy, Fitzhugh's iconic and groundbreaking children's book. For a good portion of my life, I dreamed of writing a similar book. Many years ago, when I started writing serial fiction for a children's magazine, I bought a handful of tween books to re-read, and Harriet was among them. But I knew nothing about its author. On my birthday la...

topsy-turvy land: u.s. states make protest illegal and driving into protestors legal

It seems that state lawmakers in several U.S. states need a refresher course on the First Amendment. It's a very simple amendment, really. Amendment ICongress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. While the beloved First Amendment has always been selectively applied -- cue t...

Blooms

It’s hard to stop posting photos of trees in bloom, normal I guess after a long winter. I guess mostly it’s just nice that I can get out and wander around. A nice little park filled with cherry trees. It’s behind the Institut de France seen here sticking up above the trees. A little statue there. Note the vine growing up on the building in the background. Of course, with all of these trees blossoming you will have to eventually clean up nature’s confetti.

"For people whose only home is a vehicle, the knock is a visceral, even existential, threat. How do you avoid it?"

"You hide in plain sight. Make yourself invisible. Internalize the idea that you’re unwelcome. Stay hypervigilant to avoid trouble. Apart from telling you to clear out, the police can harass you with fines and tickets or get your home-on-wheels towed away to an impound lot.... In the film ['Nomadland'], Fern, played by Frances McDormand, is startled by a knock that interrupts a quiet meal. She looks up with a start and swears. A face hovers at the window, and a fist pounds once, twice, three tim...

Seedlings

The tomato seedlings are up! This year I've planted only two varieties: roma and marmande. I thinned the seedlings down to one per pot before I took this photo. I will plant six romas and nine marmandes (there's one extra in case I lose one), significantly down from the number of tomato plants in previous years. The total number of plants has to be a multiple of three because I'm using my tripod stakes to support them. The seedlings will enjoy the warmth of the green house for the next few wee...
