Coquette, The Miniature Portrait I call Piglet

This is Piglet.     With her grey curls, which was a thing back then, because she is not that old. Her eyebrows are so hip now. How did she know? A seductive echelle, blue-ribbon untied, what was she thinking I doubt it was about chocolate. And one gold loop, not two, trying to be a modern girl without a pearl earring. I tell you this portrait has a story. Coquette! ------------------             Here is Barbara (Frank is her husband and they love France. I have had the pleasure of mee...

But there you have it. But what gives Grappa the luster of modernity is the way it is produced from the detritus left over from a vintage: skins, s...

What Caught Your Eye Today?

The painter captures the moment. Giving a glimpse of the story that unfolds before his eyes. The small details set up the atmosphere, a book with a page being turned, an empty china teacup, an apple that sits near the fold line of a crisp white linen tablecloth.   Tomorrow I will give two little portraits away and tell the story of Piglet. If you haven't already please leave a comment or send me an email to be part of the giveaway.   What small detail caught your eye today? Mine was a grassho...

The Forest of Notre Dame

At first, the news didn’t seem that shocking. I was enjoying a leisurely lunchtime on my parent’s porch in Richmond, Virginia. My brother had just read out a text from my sister-in-law: “Notre-Dame is burning”. I pictured a flickering garbage can in a little side room of the grand, resolute, and enduring cathedral. It’s in the middle of fire stations-galore á Paris! The firemen would have this out in a jiffy. We finished up the dishes and turned on the TV. My heart stopped and I burst into t...

Seedlings, again

Last weekend I posted a photo of the tomato seedlings in the green house. Here they are again this weekend, about twice the size. They look happy and healthy. And the zucchini that I thought had been eaten by something? Well, it's there. Turns out it was trying to grow upside down. I freed the leaves from the soil and righted the plant. It survived. It even looks pretty good. I'm waiting for the third one to sprout, but I'll only plant two out in the garden. You CAN have too much zucchini. I l...
