She lives in a retirement / assisted living community in Ashland, about 15 minutes from where we're staying -- and more importantly, 15 minutes from the rest of the Oregon family (all transplants from the eastern ...

Let’s not read too much into its idle ramblings. None of its ideas ever flowed into official pandemic plans. Everything we are doing […]

A Hotel

The Lutecia Hotel is nearby the upscale Bon Marche Department store. They refurbished the interior a few years ago and I looked forward to seeing it but found it rather cold and austere. I met a friend in the bar there and didn’t change my opinion but it was nice to look around. This was in the Bon Marche-getting ready for summer. Giant stuffed sea creatures for sale in case you wanted a nine foot lobster on your bed. There’s the hotel. The entrance. The symbol o...

The Guardian view on restoring the golden age of rail: green glamour | Editorial

The restoration of a Spanish ‘railway cathedral’ reminds us how seductive train travel can beEarlier this month, a 12-metre-long model train carriage was deposited at Barcelona’s El Prat airport, which the Spanish airports authority controversially plans to expand. “More trains, less planes” was the accompanying message from Greenpeace activists, who intend to take their model on a European tour in the coming months. As they do so, a celebratory stop-off at the French-Spanish border might be in o...

And speaking of daisies

These are some domesticated standard garden variety daisies in our yard. We have a patch (un massif ?) that comes back every year. They're about three feet tall and look wonderful when they flower. Once the flowers fade they look a little sad, then in the fall they turn brown and die back. I have to cut and remove the dead stems before they re-sprout the following spring. Daisies in the garden. We're expecting some rain today. We'll see how much we get. I may have to turn on the soaker hose fo...
