friends and family reunion road trip: day nine: friends, dogs, and views, plus some thoughts about future travels

When we went to the BART station to pick up our friend D yesterday, there was an unexpected surprise: a market! It was the Berkeley International Flea Market. A vendor told me it's been going on every weekend, both Saturday and Sunday, for 47 years. I was immediately drawn to the first table I saw. There were two necklaces that jumped out at me; they appeared to be " ". I have a necklace and a bracelet made of these fun beads, which I purchased at an AIDS fair when we lived in Port Credit. Turns...

After the parade of July 14th, since I was near, I went to the Palais Royal, always lovely to see. The famous courtyard. A fountain I love. The roses were blooming. Le Grand Véfour has a large outdoor seating area. I went on to the Galerie Vivienne and I was practically the only one there. I like the interior of this bistro. Love this bookstore closed on this holiday.

Covid-19 Diary : Sunday 1 August, 2021

We are now something like 18 months into this pandemic.  You would think that by this point, and after all the resources, people, and trillions of dollars spent, we would have at least some semblance of order and consistency in terms of what we do and how we respond to something that is sadly an everyday event – someone coming down with the virus.  In the US, this event has now been repeated almost 36 million times. But please read this article and note how even today, there is absolutely no c...

Take a Tour of Hacienda Xcanatun Merida Hotel by Angsana

One of the great things about running a luxury travel site for 14 years now is that we get to see the best hotels progress over time, the good ones getting better as they age. Like a good bottle of Bordeaux, the Hacienda Xcanatun Merida Hotel tasted better this third time I visited than it did during the previous stays. Hacienda Xcanatun has long been the top luxury hotel in Merida, with the only real downside being its 15- or 20-minute ride from the Paseo Montejo and Centro. The grounds and r...

Our experience at the Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara Falls, Canada

Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara Falls Picture this – your hotel has a massive water park and wave pool INSIDE the actual hotel. You don’t need to walk outside. Somewhere in the Sologne

The Sologne is a historical province in central France a little south and west of Orléans, south of the Loire River. Where we live is on its southwestern edge. In fact, Saint-Aignan is at the intersection of three historical provinces: la Sologne, le Berry, and la Touraine. This is a photo taken somewhere in that region from back in 2006 when we were exploring with some friends from California. This week's image of the week (in the sidebar), the Château de la Ferté-Imbault, was also taken then. ...
