Bread, Cheese and all that Jazz

FRENCH BREAD. The endless world of French bread. Baguettes... God, after thirty-some years in France you would think I could walk into a bakery and not drool on myself. At the market a woman walked by carrying three baguettes, they looked the same at a glance, but look at the ends- Each one has a slightly different end... Different endings though the taste is the same. With that said I prefer the one on the left, a ficelle it is long and narrow, more chewy crust per bite. Good for dips and sp...

A BLUE Whale?!? Live? In Iceland? Yes. Watch the Video.

As the vessel called Náttfari left the dock from the town of Húsavík onto uncharacteristically calm seas off the northern coast of Iceland with merely a breeze instead of ferociously gusty winds, one person said repeatedly to his father that he was hoping to see a blue whale on this trip: “Dad, I really hope I see a blue whale.” The father was not so optimistic; but his son was too excited to relent. The father finally turned to the male guide — who is possibly originally from New Zealand — and ...

Sunday Morning Photograph August 8 2021: Roads in Iceland

Nothing can be more satisfying than the old-fashioned venerable road trip: cruising mindlessly across the landscape along vast ribbons of winding asphalt that stretches for miles along virtual windows which showcase mountains, seas, and various flora and fauna — perhaps accompanied by favorite tunes to help further set the mood. A few things to keep in mind when selling your chalet

While the property and real estate market may not quite yet be at pre-pandemic levels, it is safe to say that the market is slowly warming back up. Buyers are returning, but they are being selective. using mailchimp for subscribe-by-email is no longer working (updated: it is working?!)

If you subscribed to this blog through the widget on the sidebar, that service is no longer working. Mailchimp's free option has a cap on sends -- not only how many email addresses you can send at a time (which I knew) but how many you can send, cumulatively** (which I didn't know). Even the lowest paid Mailchimp option is more than I need. And since reading this blog is free, writing it should be free, too. I am still receiving emails for blogs I subscribe to, but I don't know how long that wil...

"Why does no one say that glamping isn’t real? It does not exist outside the lifestyle pages. It’s a magazine fantasy for middle-class people."

"Lovely photographs of professionally styled and accessorised spaces — a four-poster bed with artfully dishevelled linen sitting on a beautiful faded rug inside an authentic Mongolian yurt — are taken at the golden hour to convey an idea of bucolic bliss.... The women are wearing expensive kaftans and beaded jewellery; the men have pastel sweaters knotted around their shoulders, like Italians. Everyone is tanned. Then there’s the reality. There is no plump, inviting bedding. There is no rug. The...

I flew on JetBlue founder David Neeleman's new airline, Breeze Airways, and saw how easy it is to have a great experience for dirt cheap

The inaugural flight of David Neeleman's Breeze Airways. Thomas Pallini/Insider David Neeleman's Breeze Airways is an ultra-low-cost carrier that's directly the opposite of his famed JetBlue Airways. Flyers pay low fares but are then enticed to spend more on extras like baggage and seat assignments. Avoiding extra fees on Breeze is quite easy, as I found when taking two flights on the airline. See more stories on Insider's business page. Flying during the summer of vacc...

#Saudi Aramco Bucks Trend by Prioritizing Oil Output Over Dividends - Bloomberg

Aramco Bucks Trend by Prioritizing Oil Output Over Dividends - Bloomberg Saudi Aramco is bucking the trend among oil majors by spending the windfall from this year’s surge in energy prices on boosting production capacity rather than increasing returns for shareholders. While Aramco will maintain its hefty $75 billion annual dividend -- the world’s largest and most of which goes to the government -- it’s so far resisting the path taken by other industry giants to dole out more to investors.I...

The Cost of Living in Lithuania for Expats

Sometimes I hear about a cheap place to live and it’s a country that’s not on my radar, one I haven’t been to yet. That’s the case with Lithuania, a Baltic country that’s in the north of Europe. It sits between Poland to the south, Latvia to the north, and Russia to the east. Laura Bonner, a blogger friend who hung out with me once in Guanajuato, moved there recently when her boyfriend got a job offer. She’s the woman behind the Eternal Expat blog and she agreed to share what she has found so f...

A New Cranky Talk is Live – The Great Inflight Entertainment Debate

Somehow, we still make it work. Email Dave here and let him know just how well we did ...

Spanish village seeks Unesco world heritage status for outdoor chats

Mayor of Algar (pop 1,400) says the tradition is the ‘opposite of social media’ and good for mental healthIt’s a nightly summer ritual across much of Spain: as the sweltering heat of the day eases off, chairs are hauled out to the street for an alfresco chat. Now an enterprising village in southern Spain is seeking to have the tradition recognised by the United Nations as a cultural treasure. The aim is to protect the centuries-old custom from the encroaching threat of social media and television...

Very neat

This is the front yard of a house in Mennetou-sur-Cher (I think). Everything is impeccable. Not a weed to be seen in the gravel. A nice neat row of blue campanules (bellflower). Our house has gravel paths around it and it's a constant battle against weeds. I wonder how they do it? Better living through chemistry, likely. Simple elegance. Someone spends a lot of time on this. I'm surprised our heat hasn't come on this morning. It's about 13ºC (about 55ºF) out there. But don't worry! It's predic...
