There are huge shortcomings in Australia’s electoral system, and people have sent me information over the past year that should shock all of us. But sadly, I too was ignorant about these matters and did not bother for the past 20 years. The Liberal and Labor parties are extremely devious and have systematically eroded democracy […]

A Few

I made myself get out and walk a bit. I didn’t go far but I did get a few photos. My apartment building is in a complex of about 20 buildings built about 20 years ago in a project called Front de Seine. This is one of the buildings, not apartments, but a hotel called Novotel. I’ve heard it called the Spiderman hotel but I don’t know why. This is also near my apartment building, an art wall, where I often see professional photos being taken with models standing having this or the Novo...

"The problem with aspirational lists, of course, is that they often skip the point entirely. Instead of helping us grapple with our finitude..."

"... they approximate infinity. They imply that with unlimited time and resources, we can do anything, be anyone. We can become more adventurous by jumping out of airplanes, more traveled by visiting every continent, or more cultured by reading the most famous books of all time. With the right list, we will never starve with the hunger of want. A few years ago, the father of one of my divinity students discovered that he was in the last months of life. Much to everyone’s astonishment, his fathe...

Regaining control

I took the first step in getting this year's vegetable garden back under control on Saturday. The tomatoes are a lost cause and the beans are done. We still may get a few zukes, and we're trying to keep the kale and chard going for a fall crop. We intentionally planted them along the edge of the plot with this in mind. The sorry state of the 2021 vegetable garden. So, what I did was take out the soaker hose. And yes, I realize that probably means we'll have sunny and dry weather until winter. ...
