We have a new word for that feeling when travel makes everything new

On a double-decker bus from Dublin airport to Drumcondra early one June morning, a young lad stretched out on the back seat and started to rap. What he lacked in talent he made up for in gusto. I was with a dozen of my students who were travelling from DePaul University in Chicago on a study abroad trip and this was their very first impression of Ireland. I cringed and tried to ignore the atonal reveller. Their response, it turned out, was at odds with mine. 'That's American rap!' one of them ch...

La gelée

The past few mornings have been very frosty. With morning lows below freezing, it's no surprise. Once the sun comes out (when it does), the frost melts away pretty quickly, except in places that stay shaded all day. Heavy frosts remind us that it's winter without the mess of an actual snowfall. And, we are told, freezes are good for helping to reduce the populations of insect and plant pests. The frosty view of a neighbor's property from our deck just after sunrise on Monday morning. Delicious PEI food – what and where to eat in Prince Edward Island, Canada

With sandy beaches, shallow bays and rolling farmlands, Canada’s smallest province of Prince Edward Island provides a bounty from its cold Atlantic waters and rich, red soil. The culture of PEI food is relaxed and authentic, with a deceptively homespun blend of lobster suppers and farmers markets, craft beer and seasonal produce that might have come straight from the fictional Anne of Green Gables farm at Avonlea. But Canada’s Food Island also holds its own for the most sophisticated foodie...

How Americans did the first July 4

If John Adams had it his way, we’d all be celebrating the Second of July. In a letter to his wife Abigail, dated July 3, 1776, Adams predicted that the day the Continental Congress declared independence from Great Britain would go down in history as America’s greatest, and be celebrated accordingly. “It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires, and Illuminations,” he writes, “from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forwa...

Least-crowded beaches in Portugal

Half of Portugal’s outline is defined by the ocean. Spain sits to the east and north, sharing the Iberian Peninsula, while Portugal’s southern and western borders make one long scenic string of Atlantic coastline. There’s no shortage of beaches along this ocean-facing edge, yet it’s the same few that get swamped summer after summer. The Algarve, way down south, bears the brunt of this seasonal tourism while the beaches closest to Lisbon get their fair share of traffic, too. In between, Alente...

Only 383 Covid patients in all of Ontario, yet the state of emergency drags on

Ontario is a province of more than 14 million people, about 6 million of whom live in the Greater Toronto Area, or GTA for short.  Out of this entire population there are currently only 383 patients being treated for Covid-19, the disease that can result from being infected with the novel and mostly benign coronavirus.   I use the words " can result " intentionally, because I have trouble with the concept of saying someone has a disease when it doesn't make them sick.  The whole problem with ...
