Strange sex laws around the world

Sex is becoming less of a taboo topic here in the US. But while many of us are enjoying the liberation that comes with being able to express their sexuality, there are still many regulations around the world where something as innocent as sharing a kiss with your other half could land you in hot water. From illegal erotic music to jail time for doing the deed on a motorbike, the laws around the world are as varied as sex itself. Some rules are recent and in full force, whereas others are rel...

Travel Trends For 2020: home swapping is always 'on trend'

Have you heard of undertourism (if it's even a word) or bleisure trips? No? Me neither! There are always predictions of trends in travel, whether it be that particular countries or areas grow in popularity or, now that we are more environmentally conscious of the impact on the climate of long-haul flights and wasteful hotels, with rail travel and holidays closer to home becoming more popular. I came across the puzzling terms (and others) in a recent article, 'Travel Trends For 2020', on Entre...

what i'm reading: syria's secret library: reading and redemption in a town under siege

Syria's Secret Library: Reading and Redemption in a Town Under Siege is a tribute to the power of books to heal, to offer refuge, and to nourish communities. It's also a tribute to the spirit of resistance to tyranny and oppression. In 2013, the Syrian town of Daraya was targeted by the country's dictator, Bashar al-Assad. Many residents managed to evacuate, but others stayed, determined to hold the historic and then-thriving town as a stronghold against the Assad regime. There, as their town was...

Coronavirus and the Tokyo Olympics

With Japan being home to the second-highest number of people infected with the new coronavirus (there are currently 73 confirmed cases in Japan and 620 passengers tested positive aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship currently quarantined in the port of Yokohama), doubts about the safety of having Tokyo host the Summer Olympic Games are creeping in. In China, some Olympic qualifying tournaments have already been moved due to the virus, and with the Olympics starting on July 24, some are won...

Mind the lovely gap betwixt HS1 and HS2 | Letters

The walk between the end of HS2 at London Euston and the start of HS1 at St Pancras needn’t be irksome, writes Jim Grozier, but Christopher Nankivell thinks the plan to ‘level up’ the north hasn’t been thought throughSimon Jenkins is absolutely right, as usual – this time about the folly that is HS2 (Does HS2 ‘level up’ the north? Don’t be duped, Journal, 15 February). But it won’t be necessary for people arriving from Birmingham en route to the continent to “wheel their suitcases down the Eusto...

Berlin: 10 tips for riding public transit like a local

Officially, the Berlin public transit goes by the rather daunting name, Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe, but Berliners all lovingly shorten it to BVG (beh-fow-gey). Notes on North Goa Beaches

Goa is the smallest state in India, with a coastline of approximately 160 kilometres facing the Arabian Sea. Despite its diminutive size its a bit of a pain to get around due to the roads and its geography. The state is comprised of two districts: North Goa, and South Goa. When people are planning a trip to Goa they are confronted with a decision of whether to stay in the north or south. I had this decision to make on my first trip to Goa. On that trip I was still undecided where to stay even ...

The cheapest way from London to Paris: Planes, trains & buses from £10

London and Paris are two of Europe’s biggest tourist destinations, just a few hours away from each other by road or rail; about an hour’s distance in the air. Barring car travel, there are three ways to make the journey from London to Paris: by air, by rail and by road. But what about the train-ferry combination, the one many may recall fondly from their childhoods? It is still feasible, but these days. it is not a streamlined option. You’ll need to purchase train and ferry tickets separately a...

How to Become a Sustainable Traveler in 2020

Posted: 2/17/2020 | February 17th, 2020 After years on the sidelines, sustainable travel has made its way to the forefront of the travel industry. Environmentally friendly travel is now one of the fastest-growing movements in the industry, and I, for one, welcome this trend. It’s an incredibly important topic that I’ve been writing about for years. After all, why destroy what you love? No one wants to see paradise paved over.
