Unicorns aren’t profitable — Wall Street doesn’t care

In Silicon Valley, investors don’t expect their portfolio companies to be profitable. “Blitzscaling: The Lightning-Fast Path to Building Massively Valuable Companies,” a bible for founders, instead calls for heavy spending on growth to scale in an Amazon -like fashion. As for Wall Street, it’s shown an affinity for stock in Jeff Bezos’ business, despite the many years it spent navigating a path to profitability, as well as other money-losing endeavors. Why? Because it too is far less concerned...

Political ‘fixer’ Bradley Tusk seeks $70M for Tusk Ventures’ sophomore fund

Longtime political operative Bradley Tusk got his start in Silicon Valley in 2011, when a little-known founder of a transportation startup requested his help surmounting regulatory barriers. That founder, Travis Kalanick, couldn’t afford Tusk’s $25,000 fee, so Tusk agreed to accept half of his payment in equity. As you can imagine, that deal worked out pretty well for Tusk, whose shares in Uber are now said to be worth $100 million. Tusk (pictured) spent several years advising Uber’s expan...

And Uber is going with . . . Bird (looks like)

Five months ago, the Bay Area-based electric scooter rental company Lime joined forces with the ride-hailing giant Uber, which both invested in the company as part of a $335 million round and said it was going to promote Lime in its mobile app. It’s looking now like that may have been a mistake for Lime. Though Lime presumably shared information with its investor, Uber is now on the cusp of acquiring Lime’s fiercest rival Bird, according to several sources, none of whom quite knows at what...

Top drunk-food restaurants in the US

The best part about going out on Friday isn’t the bar or the dance floor, it’s the late-night snacks you eat before the night ends. Often, that means using a rideshare service to get to said late-night spot. So, when it comes to getting the scoop on what, exactly, America’s favorite drunk food is, who better to ask than Lyft drivers?
