Michelangelo’s Medici Chapel: Light as symbolic element

A new lighting system revealed yesterday in Michelangelo’s Medici Chapel (or New Sacristy) at San Lorenzo is much more than news; it’s an opportunity to reflect on the role of light in Michelangelo’s prodigious project. Many art historians have observed that light plays a symbolic role in this space, famous for its sculptural representations of Night and Day, Dusk and Dawn, but it is indeed hard to notice this when you look  at the space with the artificial lighting system installed 30 years ago...

Ship bows

A new visit to the “Palais Royal” …, but first something about the address of my blog.  I’m back to my original blogspot address. Some bad experience about a “lost blog” (for a couple of days) a few years ago made me consider using a “domain” and I got, via Google, a www-address, which you have to pay for (not much). This has to be renewed on an annual basis. I have paid, but the www-address can’t be reached: "This domain registration expired on 01/31/2019" . I spent a very long mome...

A Visit to the Holy Land: Israel and Beyond

There are a lot of destinations that call themselves holy.  With that said, few places can claim that three of the world’s major faiths call the place sacred.  The land we speak of is Israel.  We recently returned from a two week visit and want to give you the ultimate guide to seeing the sacred sites.  This will be a two part post, with the first highlighting the religious sites of Israel, and the second will be about a side trip into Jordan.  Both are must dos, and compliment each other well....

Postcards sent from Galapagos Island

The Galapagos Islands take “snail mail” to a whole new level. In 1989, Peter and Varna Chadwick were on vacation in the Ecuadorian islands when they sent postcards to themselves at their home in Manchester, England, as a souvenir. The postcards didn’t arrive; however, last month, the home’s new owner, Kevin Thewlis, received them. He tracked down the Chadwicks, who now live in Stockton-on-Tees, to reunite them with their long-lost postcards. Photo: Peter Chadwick The cards had been sent vi...

The Best Way to See Fall Colors in Maine

I looked down at my boots and smiled at the colorful leaf-covered trail. I enjoyed hearing the crunch of leaves under my boots and the sound of water trickling in the river next to me. The last few days on the trail were like a long, deep inhale of fresh air; my yoga teacher would have been proud. I couldn’t believe my time off the grid was already over. For the last 3 days I had been lacing up my boots and hitting the relatively empty trails, while all of the other tourists were starting their ...

San Biagio in Montepulciano, Tuscany

Down in the valley, below the handsome town of Montepulciano, sits the Tempio di San Biagio. From above, this church dedicated to Saint Blaise looks like a compact jewel box, its cream travertine facade in contrast with the green cypresses and vineyards of the expansive Tuscan countryside. San Biagio is monumental in scale. Designed by Antonio da Sangallo, the church is modeled after the Basilica di Santa Maria delle Carceri in Prato, a church designed by Antonio’s older brother Gi...

Salzburg: Our favorite free (and cheap) things to do

The hills may be alive with The Sound of Music in Salzburg, but there’s plenty to do that doesn’t involve Mozart and the Von Trapp family. Rome: 10 tips for visiting St. Peter’s Basilica & the Vatican Museums

Saint Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums rank among the most visited sights for a traveler coming to Rome. And for good reason — the Vatican, the world’s smallest independent state, is the home base of the Roman Catholic Church and the Pope. It also houses the world’s most important collection of classical sculptures and Renaissance art within the Vatican Museums — including Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, which alone attracts a whopping 4 million visitors per year. Related: Cheap hotels ne...

Voices in the wilderness: a singing retreat in rural France

Teaching singing and meditation isn’t an obvious calling for a former punk rocker, but this one helps our participant hit the high notes on a break in the remote Massif Central‘Get that gob open, Liz,” says Peter. “I’m not seeing any teeth.” I obey, stretching my jaw wide as we’d done in an earlier “howling wolf” exercise, and find that not only can I hit a top F# without squeaking, I’m thoroughly enjoying myself. When I booked a three-day singing retreat at Peter Evans’s farmhouse in rural Franc...

My Top 11 Hostels in Budapest in 2019

Updated: 1/9/2019 | January 9th, 2019 Budapest has become one of the premier backpacker destinations in Europe. Over the last five years, Budapest has gone from popular to uber-popular spot with hundreds of accommodations popping up and ever increasing crowds. Over 3 million people visited the city last year! For backpackers, the combination of a party scene, ruin bars (which are awesome), lots of sights, and cheap prices makes it irresistible to visit. For a small city, all the crowds (don’t...
