Becoming Led Zeppelin - Part One - Three Mighty Documentaries at the Venice Film Festival

Jimmy Page on the Red Carpet for Becoming Led ZeppelinPhoto: La Biennale di Venezia - ASAC by A. Avezzù (Venice, Italy) The Sala Grande on the Lido is one of my favorite cinemas in which to screen a film. The original theater was inaugurated on August 10, 1937 for the fifth edition of the Venice Film Festival. Over the years it has been expanded and improved until in 2011 it was completely overhauled and reconstructed, inspired by the original 1937 design by Luigi Quagliata. Normally...

Spider Chrysanthemum and What Not to Take to a French Dinner Party

The plant identifier app that I use claimed it King Protea which I knew wasn't right. The photos the app shared were nothing like the flower in my photo.  Thank you for the suggestions Leonie was the first to tell me it’s name it is a spider  My friend Mary (we were in a monastery together) sent me this article... "...Cultivated as an herb in China for more than 3,500 years, the chrysanthemum represents nobility and is considered one of the four gentlemen: the pure and defiant recluse that re...

1 in 3 Americans deterred by restaurant mask mandates. Here’s where it’s already required.

As the Delta variant sweeps across the US, many cities and states are questioning their previous decision to relax COVID-19 restrictions. And with a vaccine rate of just over 50 percent when you include children under 12 who are ineligible, the country still has a ways to go before reaching herd immunity. A new study shows that Americans have different opinions on whether mask and vaccine mandates for restaurants will lead to them not going to a restaurant. A National Restaurant Association ...

Older

I am feeling old and so is my right knee. I have been getting infiltrations in it for years and it kept the pain at bay but it no longer works. I no longer have any cartilage left and, so, in November-I wish it were sooner-I am going to have a knee replacement. I am not looking forward to it but most people who have had it are glad they did as they are pain free. Right now I hobble about like my mother used to. So, anyway, I won’t be getting out as much as I used to to take photos. Hopefully, I ...

10 things nude beach regulars wish you’d stop doing

Clothing-optional beaches in the US offer a liberating sense of au natural freedom, all while savoring a day out on the sand. These in-the-buff destinations are diverse and scattered throughout the States; from Florida’s nudist party scene to the laid back naked surfers of California and Hawaii. And while technically, public nudity is punishable by law there are a few states that bend the rules for beach-goers. But that doesn’t mean there are no general rules of nude beaches you’re expected ...

Riding the Waves

By Mari Andrew via my friend MerryHaul thank you.   ______     After turning over and over and over again the airline ticket to fly back to California to visit my family and friends I decided to postpone my trip.  There were too many what-ifs that I was uncomfortable with and in the end, I had to heed the global information Delta/Covid is rising amongst the unvaccinated and vaccinated. Not seeing my Mom...

Next

Next on my trip to the States was California. I went north to the Cyprus Tunnel. Close up of a cyprus. I found a couple of great bookstores-always a pleasure. I met a friend I went to high school with for lunch at this place called The Wolf. I once again had a hamburger which was very good.

Visit

I am in the States visiting friends and family so no Paris photos. Just a few from Dallas. Mexican food the first night there. This is tortilla soup. Very good hamburger and fries too on another night. A glass of white wine but why I took the photo is that the glass came a set of dishes years ago from my first marriage when it was deemed important to have a full set of expensive china plates and glasses that were only used for company. I gave them to my son and his wife when ...

Posh

A friend and I met for drinks in the bar of the Lutecia Hotel. It was a Sunday evening and the bar was packed, mostly by very expensively and well dressed clientele. I felt a bit underdressed as I usually am, but I had a drink anyway. Since it was July 4th, I had an American cocktail, a cosmopolitan, which, for the price, was very small. I have never tasted a cosmo in other places that taste as good as the ones in the States, but it was good. There were little bowls of good nuts too. My dri...

Life Goes From 30 to 130 Kilometers per hour

Overnight, life has sped up from 30 kilometers an hour to 130 kilometers per hour. This acceleration wasn’t just in the car.   Our entering the fast lane is as much about lifestyle as it is about cruising. After months and months of slowly moving through a nearly empty village we’ve lost the need for speed. We are tranquilized by the empty backroads. We seem to only see passing cows, ducks, and the changing textures of the farm fields. But, in early May the government announced t...

Mint House claims top NYC hotel after COVID changed its hospitality business

What’s the top-rated hotel in New York City? According to Tripadvisor users, it’s Mint House at 70 Pine, and it’s easy to see why as you click through the photos. Throughout NYC, hotel rooms are essentially bento boxes, carefully constructed to contain all the necessary bits. But not Mint House rooms. Mint House rooms are virtually complete apartments, and travelers have taken notice. The COVID-19 pandemic changed the way Mint House operates, and as the world starts to reopen, the company is wel...

Miniature Antique Portrait That I Have Renamed After My Readers and a Giveaway

Miniature portraits catch my attention as much as everything else that is old does. I have a Brocante Bug badly as you know. The miniature portrait that I am mostly attracted to are the ones that aren't raving beauties but have a certain unusual charm. Unique in their oddness. My appeal is not to find the glass slipper. But realness, a look that strikes my curiosity, Who were they? Miniature portraits were often commissioned so that they could be given to a loved one to carry in their breast poc...

The Transition to White Hair

I was born with brown hair. As the years went by my hair went utterly gray  as if a thunderstorm landed on my head which happened after experiencing ovarian cancer with chemotherapy cocktails. I was rendered menopause at thirty-five, I never took HRT. I started dying my hair when I was in my forties, every three weeks as my hair grows fast and my skunk line wasn't attractive.   When I thought about transitioning from dyed hair to my natural color. I could see that my skunk line was truly whit...

Guest Post: Robin Henshaw & Donn Hess

"Thank You for Trying"   Some 15-ish years ago, my wife and I were simultaneously struck mad and, at the height of our insanity, decided it would be a grand idea to buy a 1-bedroom flat in Paris. We had just welcomed a baby boy into our lives and thought, “What better time than now to embark upon an ill-planned and extremely expensive adventure?”     In fairness to our younger selves, we did have several things going for us. I’d studied high school French ...

A Few

I have a few photos to post. It’s been raining a lot here so I haven’t been out much. This photo is obviously not taken in France. They do have pumpkins here but not in piles like you see in the States. I love Autumn. A full moon rising on the night I went to see the Eiffel Tower lit up in pink. A rainbow sort of piercing a cloud after a rain storm and as the sun set.

Venice Film Festival Closes with the Eerie "Lasciami Andare" (You Came Back) - Filmed during the Venice 2019 Floods

Image Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures - Photo: Andrea Pirrello (Venice, Italy) The closing film of the 77th Venice International Film Festival was Lasciami Andare (You Came Back), which filmed in Venice last November and December when the city was hit by the devastating November 12th flood, followed by endless periods of acqua alta, or high water. Production continued on the movie, and the weather was skillfully incorporated into the film. Venice and all her mysteries add an ...

WeChat users won’t be targeted by Trump executive order, US says

WeChat users in USA who download the app for personal or business communications will not be affected by Donald Trump’s ban that prohibits transactions with the app. The US Department of Commerce will clarify by September 20 which specific transactions will be prohibited but it is unlikely to impose criminal or civil liability on such users, according to a government filing in a federal San Francisco court. This development was first reported by TechCrunch. The US WeChat Users Alliance is seekin...

‘Don’t conduct mass surveillance against other countries,’ China tells the world in its global initiative on data security

China has proposed its own global data security initiative that focusses on the handling of personal user data, surveillance by foreign actors or states among a slew of other issues. Announced by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on September 8 in Beijing, the initiative comes as a retort against the United States’ similarly-focussed “Clean Network” initiative that calls on other nations to ringfence their internet infrastructure from Chinese influence. The initiative proposed 8 principles for na...
