Even This is Different in France

Colors are the same, Money is in Euros, Rules and format the same, Names of properties French streets and train stations. Yann and I have been playing after dinner it takes less than an hour for one of us to win. We are tied. Luck still has plenty to do with it. When is the last time you played a board game?                  [Author: French la Vie]

Five Miles at 92

Yann, his mom and his sister in Normandy.   The magnificent natural landscaped beach at low tide.           the ever changing beach in Normandy. My MIL has been a walking /hiking person ever since I have known her. She out walked me until she was 88 - I cannot imagine that to be a good thing consider our ages.     We walked five miles today as she often does, slowly nevertheless five miles. Impressive. Damn impressive. When I hear younger people say, "I want to be like that when I ...

92 Strong

My MIL rode on the back of Yann's motorcycle when she was 89. Climbed a mountain in the French Alps that I don't think I could do now. People asked if we were sisters ten years ago. My MIL hasn't any wrinkles on her face and hasn't had botox. the list could go on and on... We walked five miles on the beach today. Amazing will power.                Related Stories Chez Paul in Paris 13 rue CharonneFrench WaysA Beach in Normandy  [Author: French la Vie]

Marseille-Normandy

Driving from Marseille to  the Normandy coastline  to see Yann’s family  16 hours in a car with anyone is a proof of love, right? We are taking the backroads… I want to stop every two inches to take a photo. But that hasn’t happened - we are not driving straight through That was the compromise!     So many roads! so many charming villages! so many chateaux! so many « oh look at that’ » so many naps. more to come …                   [Author: French la Vie]

A Beach in Normandy

As far as my eye could see the beach went further my feet longing to walk and walk but first, we will visit Yann's family and then my desire to walk will run along this beach. Sorry for the lack of photos, but between a slow internet and full days of traveling my eyes long to surrender to sleep.                     [Author: French la Vie]

Shifting Gears

I thought this vacation going to see Yann's family I would create a travel log of our road trip, add photos, tips, and places to see... addresses. I thought of the delightful fodder for my blog. I was looking forward to adding my photos -thoughts at the end of each day that would highlight the happy side.    Though the reality is this year has been heavy emotionally, and this vacation as lovely as it is finds me wanting space to let go and just be. I need a rest, I need time for my emotions ...

Happy 59th Birthday Yann

Birthday lunch for Yann with Chelsea, Martin, Gabriel, (not in the photo) Tatiana (Yann's great-niece) Juliette (Yann's niece) and Stephane (Juliette's partner). I love this photo so much! They are cracking up because Stephane and Yann were being funny. I was so in the moment that I took only a handful of photos, which are posted here. Plus (or should it be minus) I forgot to take one of all of us DING DONG. We had lunch at the place were we celebrated Chelsea and Martin's civil wedding. It i...

The Pied Piper

Water and being outside are two things most children love. The fountain at the park was hard to turn on for most of the little hands there so Yann decided to hold it on for them. Gabriel, as you can see doesn't like wet clothes, hence he was in his diaper. Once the children knew that someone was holding the water on the lineup was continuous their pails, and water bottles were filled and dumped in the sand box.       Children being children carefree, barefoot, playing with water and sand ...

Holding Memories in a Safe Place

The inside of this box took me by surprise, because of it I had to buy it then I sold it that is how it goes as a brocante buyer. In one hand and out by the other. 1800 hand embroidery piece tucked into a small case. It probably was used to hold a rosary or relic… I have seen plenty of curious and beautiful antiques many ask me how I can stand to let things go… I am not sentimental about objects, well maybe once in awhile, that is why I can do what I do. My mother would beg to differ as my ho...

Ever Changing Light

Five hours drive  through magnificent countryside to an area I had never seen Aix les Bain. We went for one night while there we walked by the lake Yann told me that during WWII a German plane crashed into it two people drown and the other two were rescued.  Germany in turn released four French prisoners. Random conversation. We came to attend Yann’s cousin’s funeral  who died of covid… healthy, no underline conditions, loved enormously, a generous figure in the community. Tragic. He had his fi...

My Cousin Julie

Ah, my cousin Christine, Julie’s sister sent me this photo today. When Yann and I were newlyweds living in Paris, Julie came to visit. She would come visit us many many times as the years came and went.   Julie and I were 30 years old.    In this trip visiting us we went through Paris’ famous underground illegally, climbing on telephone wires with rubber boats we bought in Bon Marche for 150 Francs. It was probably the most daring, outrageous, thrilling experience I had ever had. An eye open...
