  • Haptics are any type of technology that gives you a tactile response - for example, when your phone vibrates.
  • If you use an iPhone, you may be familiar with Haptic Touch, a feature which vibrates your phone when you long-press the screen.
  • Haptics have been around since the 1970s, and are used in medical equipment, video games, and more.
  • Visit Insider's Tech Reference library for more stories.

If you're in the market for something like a new phone, or you've just been reading up on recent technology, you've probably come across the term "haptics" more than once.

It may seem like a complex concept, but it's really not - haptics are any type of technology that give you a tactile response (a response you can physically feel) when you do something.

What to know about haptics

Haptics allow non-responsive surfaces like touchscreens to emulate the feeling of using real objects like buttons and dials. Haptic technology can involve vibrations, motors, and even ultrasound beams to simulate the feeling of touch.

A popular example of haptic feedback can be found on Apple Macbooks. Since about 2016, all Macbook trackpads have a feature that makes a extra click when you press your finger down harder. If you have the "Force Click" option turned on, clicking a word with this extra pressure will look up its definition.

Haptic Touch vs. Haptic feedback

When it comes to iPhones, every model after the iPhone X - this includes the iPhone XR, as well as every iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 - has a feature called Haptic Touch.

Haptic Touch is a specific form of haptic feedback that uses vibrations to mimic sensations like pressing a button or scrolling through a list when you do it on your screen. For example, if you hold your finger on an app icon, you'll feel a vibration as a menu opens.

If you have an earlier iPhone model than those, you might instead have 3D Touch, which is similar. While Haptic Touch is software based - it makes vibrations based on how long you touch the screen, or where you swipe - 3D Touch is hardware based - it makes vibrations based on how hard you touch the screen.

This made 3D Touch more limited, and also required Apple to give their phones special pressure-sensitive screens. Now, Haptic Touch can do everything 3D Touch did and more.

Where you can find haptic technology

Many of us are familiar with haptic feedback on smartphones. But the truth is that haptic feedback can be found in all sorts of places - even something as simple as a vibrating arcade game controller uses haptic technology to enhance the user experience.

In fact, haptics have been around since the 1970s, when they were first used as part of a warning system in planes to alert pilots about dangerous flight conditions. The controls would vibrate in tandem with turbulence so that pilots could feel what was happening on the outside of the plane.

Since then, the same controls have been used in all kinds of devices - first in arcade games, then in video games like the controllers for the Nintendo 64 or PlayStation. The vibrations in the controllers can correspond with all sorts of in-game actions, like running, fighting, driving, and more.

These systems have become more sophisticated in the years since - now some games have moments that depend entirely on those feedback sensations, and more intensive games like "Call of Duty" or sports games feel more immersive with consistent haptic feedback.

Haptics are also used in Apple watches, in the little "click" sensations you feel when you scroll using the digital crown. They're also used for a variety of touchscreens beside the iPhone, including on iPads and Mac computer.

Lisa Eadicicco/Insider

In addition, Apple has devices called the Magic Mouse and a Magic Trackpad - these devices don't have any actual buttons, but they feel like they do. When you click on something with them, the sensation that you feel is haptic.

Of course, this list is by no means exhaustive - there are thousands of different ways haptics are used in our lives, from some smart TV remotes to digital dashboards in cars to high-tech medical training devices that help students practice surgery before they're ready to operate on real people.

Peloton responds to concerns over Apple GymKit integration Third-party hardware integration can be a tricky thing. Peloton this week raised some eyebrows by dropping Apple GymKit compatibility for its Bike Bootcamp program. Users were, naturally, quick to react. The situation left some wondering whether the move was a direct response to Apple’s recent entry into the home exercise market with Fitness+.

A Peloton spokesperson offered the following statement to TechCrunch, “Apple GymKit is designed to work with equipment-based cardio workouts. However, Peloton recently implemented GymKit with Bike Bootcamp, a multi-disciplinary class type that combines strength and cardio, which the feature does not support. Members can still use GymKit to sync their cycling-only workouts to their Apple Watch from the Bike+.”

The comment appears to reflect one of the bigger issues with its initial GymKit implementation. Designed with the gym in mind, Apple’s program engages with specific exercise equipment. In other words, use the integration on the treadmill and the Watch specifically goes to work tracking run metrics. Use it with a bike and it tracks cycling.

A program like Bike Bootcamp complicates things, adding to the mix things like weightlifting. Likely that didn’t quite mesh with the third-party guidelines around GymKit implementation. The bigger issue for Peloton owners is that GymKit was a primary distinguisher between the standard Peloton bike and the Bike+ — two products with a $500 gulf between them.

Truth is, for now at least, working together is still a net positive for both parties. Apple may have its own fitness platform, but Peloton has a huge footprint — one that likely has significant overlap with Apple Watch users. GymKit may have been developed with gyms in mind, but people haven’t visited the gym much in the past year, and there’s a reasonable expectation that the industry might never entirely bounce back.

For Peloton’s part, it’s probably good to play nice with the company that utterly dominates the smartwatch category.

Peloton launches new Bike+ and Tread smart home gym equipment, both at $2,495

Apple Music streaming revenue detailed in letter to artists Streaming revenue has been a longtime concern for musicians, especially those scraping by in the wake of an industry-wide implosion of record labels. Of course, a year that has made touring an impossibility has only brought those issues into starker relief as the primary revenue source for many has completely dried up.

Apple is hoping to clarify some of the major questions around streaming revenue in a letter it sent to artists. The note, reported by The Wall Street Journal, outlines a revenue that amounts to around double what Spotify pays out.

“As the discussion about streaming royalties continues, we believe it is important to share our values,” the company notes. “We believe in paying every creator the same rate, that a play has a value, and that creators should never have to pay for featuring music in prime display space on its service.”

The company’s comment is a clear shot at Spotify’s much more varied payment model. What that actually works out to at the end of the day, however, is a slightly more complicated question. Things start at around a penny-per-stream (though it can go down from there). That amount is paid out to rights holders — be they record labels or publishers. It’s another in a long line of issues that have led many musicians to question the efficacy of intermediaries in 2021.

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek fanned the flames in an interview last year, stating, “Some artists that used to do well in the past may not do well in this future landscape, where you can’t record music once every three to four years and think that’s going to be enough.”

At the end of the day, it’s a battle of pennies — or fractions thereof, for many artists. And it has become immensely difficult for mid-tier and truly independent artists to maintain a living as the world has shifted to a streaming model. Services like Bandcamp and Soundcloud have worked to make things more manageable for smaller artists, but the life of a modern musician remains a struggle — especially in the age of COVID-19.

Apple Cash is a convenient financial service on your iPhone. You might use it to transfer money to other people via iMessages, and you can accrue cash back from your Apple Card, which pays up to 3% back on certain purchases. There are several ways to use the money in your Apple Cash account, but a common one is to transfer it to your bank account or to a Visa debit card.

How to transfer Apple Cash to your bank account

You can transfer some or all of your Apple Cash to your bank account. It takes one to three days for the transfer to complete, but it's completely free with no transfer fees.

  1. Start the Wallet app on your iPhone and then tap your Apple Cash card.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu at the top right of the screen. How to transfer Apple Cash to bank 4 Open your Apple Cash card in the Wallet app to transfer cash to a Visa debit card.

  1. Start the Wallet app on your iPhone and then tap your Apple Cash card.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu at the top right of the screen.
  3. Tap "Bank Account."
  4. On the Bank Account page, tap the entry for your account.

    Dave Johnson/Insider

  6. You can also delete the account information entirely by tapping "Delete Bank Account Information" at the bottom of the page. Tap again to confirm you want to do this. Now you can enter new bank account information.

You only need to do this once; your banking information is automatically synchronized everywhere you use Apple Cash on all your Apple devices.

How to troubleshoot problems transferring money from Apple Cash

Most of the time, you should have no trouble transferring money from Apple Cash to a bank account or debit card. Sometimes, of course, things go wrong. Here are some things to watch for:

  • If in doubt, check your statement. Check your bank or debit card statement to ensure the money was transferred as expected.
  • Some delays are not unusual. Remember that it takes one to three days for cash to appear in your bank account (and 30 minutes for Visa debit card transfers). And watch the calendar - banks don't make transfers or deposits on weekends or on bank holidays.
  • There are transfer limits. You can transfer up to $10,000 at once and as much as $20,000 within any seven-day period. If you reach either limit, you'll need to wait to transfer more.
  • Transfers are only valid to banks in the US. You'll need a US-based bank to make transfers from Apple Cash.
  • Is your phone up to date? If you're having trouble, make sure you have the latest version of iOS installed (or, if you're attempting the transfer on your iPad, check for the latest version of iPadOS.)
  • Be sure you have connectivity. When attempting a transfer, make sure you have cellular or Wi-Fi service so the transfer can go through.
  • Make sure your debit card is compatible with Apple Cash. If you're trying to transfer cash to a debit card, it needs to be an eligible Visa debit card. If in doubt, contact the company that issued your Visa debit card.
  • Verify you entered the right banking information. Double-check that you entered the right account and routing numbers in your banking information. If you entered the wrong numbers, money may go to the wrong account.
  • If all else fails, contact Apple Support. An Apple support technician may be able to help you troubleshoot the problem.

We'll update this list regularly to help you find the best price.

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky iPad (8th generation) deals 2020 iPad 10.2-inch (8th Gen, 128GB) (medium, Preferred: Amazon)
  • Typical price: $320 to $400
  • Display size: 10.2-inch
  • Display type: Retina Display
  • Available colors: Silver, space gray, gold
  • Storage capacities: 32GB, 128GB

The eighth-generation 10.2-inch iPad is with its balance of performance and value. Whether you're buying your first iPad or upgrading from an older model, it's a solid choice and comes in either 32GB or 128GB storage options. It has a clear and sharp 2,160 x 1,620-pixel resolution and an A12 processor capable of most apps and tasks. If you're an artist or a fan of handwritten notes, it's also compatible with the Apple Pencil.

We see deals on this iPad regularly throughout the year. More often than not, however, sales are limited to only one color or storage capacity, so if you see a good price on one that fits your needs, don't hesitate to buy. These deals also tend to sell out fast. Street price varies for each option, but for the most part: it's less than retail price.

iPad Air (4th Gen) deals iPad Air (4th Gen., 64GB) (medium, Preferred: Amazon)
  • Typical price: $569 to $699
  • Display sizes: 10.9-inch
  • Display type: Liquid Retina display with True Tone
  • Available colors: Silver, space gray, rose gold, green, sky blue
  • Storage capacities: 64GB, 256GB

The 2020 iPad Air is powerful performance encased in an updated, premium design. It features sharper edges, an A14 Bionic chip (the same chip powering the iPhone 12 series), USB-C charging, and a Touch ID sensor on the power button. It supports the second-generation Apple Pencil, a great stylus for tablet drawing; the sharp 10.9-inch Liquid Retina True Tone Screen also sweetens the build for artists. The fourth-generation iPad Air comes in five colors: green, rose gold, sky blue, silver, and space gray.

Since it only launched in September 2020, deals for the latest iPad Air don't surface often, or if they do, they're pretty minimal discounts. At the moment, however, street price appears to be trending downward by $30 (as is typically the case with iPads) — though it's often difficult to even find some storage sizes in stock.

iPad Mini (5th Gen) deals iPad Mini (5th Gen., 256GB) (medium, Preferred: Amazon)
  • Typical price: $395 to $529
  • Display sizes: 7.9-inch
  • Display type: Retina display with True Tone
  • Available colors: Silver, space gray, rose gold
  • Storage capacities: 64GB or 256GB

With its 7.9-inch display, the fifth-generation iPad Mini is ideal for tablet users prioritizing a compact form factor. Just like its bigger sibling (the 2020 iPad), the iPad Mini is powered by the A12 Bionic chip and is compatible with the first-generation Apple Pencil. It comes in three different finishes and you can choose between the smaller 64GB or the larger 256GB storage options.

The iPad Mini sees regular deals year-round. Street price hovers around $10 or $20 less than retail price most of the time though, so never settle for paying retail price (unless you absolutely have to).

iPad Pro (4th Gen) deals iPad Pro (12.9-inch, Wi-Fi, 512GB) (medium)
  • Typical price: $999 to $1,450
  • Display sizes: 11-inch, 12.9-inch
  • Display type: Liquid Retina display with ProMotion technology and True Tone
  • Available colors: Silver, space gray
  • Storage capacities: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB

The 2020 iPad Pro performs so well, it's good enough to replace some laptops. On the outside, both the 11- and 12.9-inch 2020 iPad Pros have slim bezels, a sharp screen, and are compatible with many great add-ons like the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard. Internally, it's a powerhouse; it has a A12Z Bionic processor  with laptop-like power and is available in up to 1TB of storage.

But Apple is widely expected to release new iPad Pro models at its event on April 20. These devices will have faster new processors similar to the M1 chip in Apple's newest MacBooks, while the 12.9-inch model will get a new mini-LED screen with better contrast, according to Bloomberg.

As is typical of most Apple iPads, the 2020 model has seen regular discounts throughout the year. There's a chance this version could also see deeper discounts if a newer model is announced.

Regardless of whether Apple launches a new iPad Pro, the best deals can be found during major holidays like Presidents' Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday

Street price varies drastically between each screen size and storage variant, but as a rule of thumb: smaller storage variants usually run for $40 less than retail price, so never settle for paying more.

iPad Accessory deals

Compatibility for some accessories will depend on the iPad you own, but for the most part, add-ons like the and Magic Keyboard are game-changing to your tablet usage. You can find many off-brand cases and keyboards for much less (and usually with better deals), but you don't need to be an Apple aficionado to recognize the beauty of the official Apple accessories.

Discounts for accessories tend to be a bit smaller compared to that of iPads. If you find $10 off an Apple Pencil or $20 off a Magic Keyboard, chances are, it's a worthwhile deal. It's just important to make note of each item's street price, as retail can often be inflated.

After weeks of speculation, we know that Apple’s first big product event of 2021 will be on Tuesday, April 20. (Thanks, Siri!) What could Apple possibly have to launch after hosting not one, not two, but three events this past fall? Well, a lot actually—but save your iBong jokes, it’s most definitely not anything…

  • Impossible Foods has hired former Apple creative director Steve Turner to oversee marketing.
  • Turner worked at Apple for 11 years, often alongside Apple cofounder Steve Jobs.
  • The plant-based burger startup plans to go public within a year, sources told Reuters.

Plant-based burger company Impossible Foods has hired Steve Turner from Apple, where he was global executive creative director.

Turner is now Impossible Foods' chief experience officer, a new role, and will lead the company's marketing.

He worked at Apple for 11 years, often alongside Apple founder Steve Jobs on some of the company's most iconic tech, including the iPod and iPhone.

Turner now reports to the CEO and founder of Impossible Foods, Dr Pat Brown. He would oversee all aspects of the startup's marketing and customer experience, Impossible Foods said.

Turner joins amid reports that the company is exploring options to go public through an IPO, or by merging with a blank-check company, in the next 12 months. It could be valued at $10 billion if it went public, sources told Reuters last week.

Founded in 2011, the company manufactures soy-based burgers and sausages, emitting less carbon than in animal agriculture. It was valued at $4 billion at its last private funding round in March 2020.

Competitor Beyond Meat has a market cap of more than $8 billion, with shares trading more than 400% higher than its 2019 IPO price.

In 2020, Impossible got its flagship product, the Impossible Burger, into 2,100 Walmart stores. Its burgers are also sold in Kroger, Trader Joe's, and Stop and Shop.

The company is currently searching for a new global headquarters in the San Francisco Bay Area to accommodate its expanding team, having doubled its headcount last year.

Podcast Ep 221: Sometimes we’ve got to block, delete or unfriend Thanks to the internet, social media and our mobile devices, there will be occasions where we need to block, delete or unfriend. This is something that most of us don’t envision having to do with someone we once liked, loved or valued, and as a result, we get stuck in trying to avoid it. In this week’s episode of The Baggage Reclaim Sessions, I talk about why we resist blocking, deleting or unfriending even when not doing so means that we torture ourselves. I share some of the signs that it’s time to block, delete or unfriend, and questions we can ask ourselves to check in with our needs, boundaries and values.

Subscribe on Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Android

5 key topics in this episode
  • Not wanting to be someone who has to block, unfriend or delete is a big stumbling block for us. We see these acts as being indictments of our worthiness or how ‘good’ we are at relationships. It’s like If I unfriend or block my ex, they or others will know that our relationship wasn’t that great or that I haven’t handled the breakup well.
  • Keeping people in our contacts or remaining connected to them on social media despite how doing so makes us feel bad and keeps us stuck in harmful cycles of behaviour hogs up valuable bandwidth.
  • Everything that humans do is about trying to meet emotional needs. Our resistance to blocking, unfriending or deleting, and what we’re doing instead, are our attempts to meet other needs. But our feelings are the clue that we are ignoring our very real needs. And if we’re ignoring our needs, we’re ignoring our boundaries.
  • If engaging in a painful dynamic that actually requires a block/unfriend/delete is about trying to right the wrongs of the past, playing Columbo and snooping, self-sabotage or continuing with uncharacteristic and harmful behaviour, we need to stop. Is it worth me interacting with this person to end up feeling, thinking and behaving like this?
  • It’s critical to get honest about our motivations for remaining connected. This doesn’t necessarily mean that we will block, unfriend or delete, but it does mean that we can be more intentional. We can ensure that we’re not playing games and getting involved in other ego-driven behaviour.

Blossom and the Bramley Apple Tree

Peter Morrin, former Director of Louisville’s Speed Art Museum, emailed me a few weeks ago to say there was a remarkable piece of glasswork on display at the Speed called Blossom. Peter gave few details, beyond mentioning an etched 3-D rendering of a slowly dying apple tree and also that the museum piece was gizmo-wired to pick up live vibrations in, on, and surrounding the original Bramley apple tree in Southwell, England.

I wondered.

Rose and I met Peter at the Speed. He drew us near and, with seasoned stagecraft, said in a quiet voice, “I’m curious to see what you think.”

We entered a small, darkened room shrouded by black curtains.

I thought of a Halloween when I was ten years old. My pal Jim’s mom, Mrs. Barta, led her son and his buddies, by the hand, one by one, blindfolded, through a basement maze. We touched peeled grapes (eyes), blanched tomatoes (heart) and corn silk (hair). I still remember vividly the tactile grossness and excitement.

The sorcerer’s glass sculpture was in the middle of the dark room on the second floor of the Speed. I needed a few moments to adjust my eyes to the lighted 32-inch magic cube.  There was a diaphanous, gauzy figure of the Bramley apple tree, laser-etched within smaller cubes, each as different texturally and chromatically as the next.

We slow danced around Blossom, bobbing and weaving to sounds triggered by the Bramley apple tree’s environment in the elegiac Key of C. Artist Wolfgang Buttress said in a fascinating interview that this soundscape “…slightly alters your perception of nature.”

Strands of tiny colored, LED lights blinked rhythmically. Random bursts of a brighter light flashed intermittently, triggered by vibrations from the apple tree in Nottinghamshire and picked up, in the blink of an eye, 4000 miles away in Louisville, Kentucky.

Bramley apple tree in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, England.

As the Speed’s placard describes it:

This project uses sculpture, light, and sound to poetically reveal the life and death cycle of trees. For Blossom, the artist Wolfgang Buttress, based in Nottingham, England, documents the fading life of a 200-year-old Bramley apple tree (the mother of all Bramley apple trees), and the flourishing life of this tree’s progeny.

Working with scientist Dr. Martin Bencsik, Buttress attached accelerometers to the trunk and roots of the original Bramley apple tree… The artist also will attach accelerometers to a graft taken from the original Bramley tree which will be planted next to the original dying tree. Information from this new tree’s vibrations will be sent in real time to the Speed in Spring 2021 when the tree is in blossom…

Music is an important device in Buttress’s practice and a key facet in Blossom’s soundscape. Buttress collaborated with musicians in the United Kingdom such as Kev Bales and Tony Foster (BE) and musicians in Kentucky to create a library of sounds harmonious to the key of “C” (the resonant frequency of the mother tree)…

Blossom thus presents a memory of the past, a document of the present, and a hope for the future. According to Buttress, “The sculpture expresses how life is formed and hopefully allows us to reconnect with the natural world around us.”

For the past five years, I’ve carefully watched over young apple trees in Kentucky. I’ve done all I can to guard them from gnawing rabbits and grazing deer. I don’t spray for apple scab and can’t control late frosts that zap blooms or any prospect of apple cider for another year. It has been slow going with ‘Albemarle Pippin’, ‘Enterprise’, ‘Liberty,‘ and ‘Redfree.’

The original Bramley apple tree, the provenance of one of the UK’s favorite cooking apples, is now over 200 years old, and dying slowly of honey fungus.

I am waiting for my first ripe apple.

I had imagined, as I often do on the front end of any new planting project, that a tiny orchard would be a chance to explore a new frontier. Annie Proulx’s handbook The Best of Cider, first published in 1973, would be my guiding light to hard cider.

Apple tree in bloom at Shaker Village, Pleasant Hill, Kentucky on April 13th. Author photo.

I now realize, as with the slog of weeding the vegetable garden in the heat of mid-August, that it would be easier to go to the local farmer’s market for fresh produce or to local orchards for apples in the fall.

And yet I can’t wait for spring’s launch pad—kneading cold soil through my fingers as I sow a crooked row of beans.

There’s no way to outsource a sense of wonder.

The magic comes from touching peeled grapes blindfolded, watching  fat bean cotyledons stretch toward the sun, or absorbing the inspiration of an artist’s Blossom, or any apple blossom, up close.

“Blossom” is part of the Speed Art Museum’s permanent collection and will be on display for the foreseeable future.

But during prime festival season you get bonus editions, too! Subscribe now.

As I mentioned last week, we were expecting news from BeachLife. Festival organizers announced that it will return to Redondo Beach in September.

Also, the Hollywood Bowl is back in business even sooner. Shows will start up there in just a few weeks.

And since Rage Against the Machine dropped their 2022 rescheduled dates and Southern California is suspiciously missing, Tom and I also recorded a special edition of the Can’t Feel the Heat podcast to talk about Coachella 2022 dates.

Speaking of Coachella, every day that Facebook Memories pops up in April, there’s all of these images of the festival. It is super weird being at home for the second consecutive April. (If you want to take a trip down memory lane, here are some of our best Coachella photos from 2019 and photos of the art pieces through the years.)

On a more personal note, three years ago this week, Festival Pass was born. I figured I was already writing recaps from Coachella and Stagecoach, and people seemed to like reading about music festivals, so why not see they wanted to get those stories delivered to their inbox?

More than 150 editions and a pandemic later, I just want to say thank you to the thousands of you who give me a space in your inbox every week. And to those of you who have written back over the years to ask a question, share a funny story or just say hello, you have no idea how much those notes brighten my day. Festival Pass readers are the best.

And since we are gearing up for everything reopening, I really appreciate all of you who have forwarded the newsletter to all of the other live music fans in your life. As I said before, Festival Pass readers are the best!

Back to the beach

The BeachLife Festival made a big splash with its 2019 debut and it was on track for an even bigger 2020, but then the pandemic happened. Now, it’s coming back to Redondo Beach. We don’t know who’s playing. We don’t know what the COVID-19 restrictions are. But we do know when BeachLife is happening.

  • You have a good chance of qualifying for an Avant personal loan with a credit score of 600.

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky Should you use Avant? You may like Avant if you ... You may not like Avant if you ...
  • Have a credit score as low as 600
  • Want to avoid prepayment penalties
  • Want a company with long customer service hours
  • Need your funds within one business day
  • Want to manage your loan from a mobile app
  • Need to borrow more than $35,000
  • Don't have an account with a bank or credit union
  • Have a lower credit score but could get a better APR with a credit card

The bottom line: Avant is a good personal loan provider, especially if you have a lower credit score and want your money quickly. Just be prepared to pay a high APR if you do have a low score.

How Avant works

Avant provides personal loans through WebBank (Member FDIC), a state-chartered industrial bank. Avant offers both secured and unsecured personal loans, but we're focusing on the company's unsecured personal loan options. Unsecured loans are more common with Avant and with competing lenders.

An unsecured personal loan doesn't require any collateral, such as a house or car. These personal loans can be used for a variety of purposes.

Avant loan amounts range from $2,000 to $35,000. The minimum amount you're required to borrow varies by state. Avant offers loans to all 50 states and Washington, DC.

The minimum loan term is 24 months, and the maximum term is 60 months. You can pay off Avant loans in full at any time without incurring an early payment penalty.

Depending on your credit score and annual income, your APR will range from 9.95% to 35.99%, which is higher than some other major competitors' APR ranges. For example, Best Egg's range is 5.99% to 29.99%, and Marcus by Goldman Sachs' is 6.99% to 19.99%.

If Avant offers you a loan with a high interest rate, you may want to look into credit cards for people with bad credit and compare rates between a card and a loan - you might be eligible for a lower APR and better terms with a credit card. Weighing the pros and cons of your decision will help you get the best financial deal possible.

If your loan is approved by Avant by 4:30 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, funds are generally deposited by the next business day, per the company's website.

You can reach Avant via their customer service email address, Or call 800-712-5407 Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. CT, or weekends from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. CT.

Avant also has a mobile app with a smooth, well-designed interface. The app has 4.5 out of 5 stars in the Apple store, and 3.8 out of 5 stars in the Google Play store.

Avant has a Support Center with answers to questions, sorted by topic.

You can get a variety of personal loans from Avant, including:

You'll need to meet the following requirements to apply:

  • You must be over the age of 18 (19 if you live in Alabama)
  • You must have a personal bank or credit union account (prepaid card accounts aren't eligible)
  • You must be able to provide documents to verify your income, identity, and other information as requested
What credit score do you need to qualify for an Avant loan?

To qualify for a personal loan, Avant states on its website that most customers have a credit score between 600 and 700. However, your credit score isn't the entire factor in your loan approval, so you may still consider applying with a lower score. Here's how scores break down, according to FICO:

  • Very poor: 300 to 579
  • Fair: 580 to 669
  • Good: 670 to 739
  • Very good: 740 to 799
  • Exceptional: 800 to 850

Your credit score will not be impacted if you check your loan rates with Avant, because the company only generates a soft credit inquiry.

Avant will perform a hard credit inquiry once you continue with the loan application, which will likely affect your credit score. A hard inquiry gives a lender a comprehensive view of your credit history, but may negatively affect your score.

Avant may be a good choice for you if you have a lower credit score, because Avant has more lenient credit score requirements than other personal loan companies. Keep in mind that the lower your credit score, the higher your APR could be - and Avant rates go up to 35.99%.

Here are some tips you may consider to improve your credit score before applying for a loan:

  • Ask for and examine a copy of your credit report. Look for any mistakes on your report that could be tanking your score. If so, reach out to the credit bureau to talk about fixing the error.
  • Keep credit card balances low. Sustaining a credit utilization rate - the percentage of your total credit you're using - of 30% or less will prove to lenders that you can handle your credit well.
  • Design a system for paying bills in a timely fashion. Your payment history makes up a significant percentage of your credit score, and lenders prefer to see stable payments in the past. Set up calendar reminders or automatic payments so you don't find yourself playing catch up.
Is Avant trustworthy?

Avant is a Better Business Bureau-accredited company, and the BBB gives Avant an A in trustworthiness. The BBB assesses trustworthiness by evaluating a business' responses to consumer complaints, truthfulness in advertising, and transparency about business practices.

However, good BBB scores don't guarantee you will have a good relationship with companies. They're merely a guideline to help you get started on your hunt for a personal loan provider.

Avant does have a recent controversy. In 2019, the company settled a case with the Federal Trade Commission where it was found liable for putting unauthorized charges on customers' credit card, and for illegally requiring customers to agree to automatic payments from their bank accounts when taking out a loan.

Due to Avant's recent history, you may decide you're more comfortable using a different personal loan company.

The pros and cons of Avant personal loans Pros
  • Quick access to funds. If your loan is approved by 4:30 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, funds are generally deposited by the next business day. The exact time will depend on your bank and its processing time.
  • No prepayment penalty. You can make additional payments toward your loan, and you won't be charged an extra fee.
  • Mobile app. Avant has a strong mobile app. Not all personal loan companies come with apps.
  • Multiple types of fees. You'll have to pay an administration fee of up to 4.75%, which will be deducted from your loan proceeds when the loan is funded. If you miss a scheduled payment, you may incur a late fee, which will vary by state. If a scheduled payment is returned unpaid, dishonored payment fees may apply.
  • High maximum APR. Compared to competitors like Best Egg, Marcus, and Lightstream, Avant's maximum APR of 35.99% is high. Best Egg's max is 29.99% APR, and Marcus' and Lightstream's are 19.99% APR.
How to get an Avant personal loan

The application is available online and can be completed in a few minutes. You'll need basic information for the initial application, including:

  • Name
  • Contact information including your address, phone number, and email
  • Whether you rent or own your home
  • How much you pay for housing each month
  • Date of birth
  • Social security number
  • Employment status
  • Individual income (monthly net income)
  • Reason for applying for a personal loan and how much you want to take out
  • Other financial information, such as how you would rate your credit quality

You'll be able to see your offers and interest rate range within a few minutes. You'll need to undergo identity verification to complete the application process, and you may need to provide confirmation of certain financial details before your application is approved.

After you've verified your information, the funds will be delivered to your bank account as requested, usually by the next business day.

How does Avant compare to other personal loan lenders?

Although rates are specific to borrowers, Avant interest rates are higher than those offered by other big-name lenders. Here's how Avant compares to the competition.

Avant review vs. Marcus by Goldman Sachs review

Avant charges an administration fee of up to 4.75%, which will be subtracted from your loan proceeds when it's funded. You'll also pay a fee if you miss a scheduled payment or if a scheduled payment is returned unpaid.

You won't pay any fees with Marcus, including late fees. Rather, you'll rack up more interest if you don't pay on time, and your final payment will be bigger.

With Marcus, you'll receive a 0.25% discount on your loan by signing up for AutoPay; Avant does not offer this perk.

While Marcus has no official minimum credit score requirement, the company recommends a minimum credit score of 660 in an informational post on its website. This suggestion is higher than Avant's loose guidelines by a significant margin. If your credit score is below 660, Avant is likely the better option. That said, the lower your credit score, the higher an APR you will probably pay.

Avant vs. Best Egg personal loans

You'll pay a late fee with both loan providers - Avant's late fee depends on which state you live in, while Best Egg's late fee is $15. Both have additional fees baked into the cost of the loan. Avant charges an administration fee of up to 4.75% of your loan amount, while Best Egg's has an origination fee ranging from 0.99% to 5.99%.

Avant also has a lower minimum credit score guideline than Best Egg - though both companies have relatively low minimums. As a result, Avant might be the better choice if your credit is toward the lower side of "fair."

You'll receive your funds roughly in the same amount of time with both companies. Avant claims most customers will receive their funds the next business day, and Best Egg says the majority of customers will get their money within one to three business days.

You can now pay for BART using an iPhone or Apple Watch Good news, Bay Area! Apple Pay now works with Clipper cards.

That means you can now use an iPhone or Apple Watch to pay for BART. Or Muni. Or Caltrain. Or the Ferry! Or (almost) any other transit-related thing you’d otherwise use the plastic Clipper card for.

Clipper has a page outlining the Apple Pay setup process right here.

A few quick but important things to note:

  • Adding an existing Clipper card to an Apple Wallet apparently transfers the funds off that card. At that point, says Clipper, “your plastic card has been deactivated” — so it sounds like it won’t work as a physical backup card.
  • Some people will want to hang on to the plastic cards, regardless: Clipper notes that Bay Area bike share users and anyone using an RTC Discount Card will need to keep the plastic card, even after its deactivated for transit use.
  • Clipper has previously confirmed that support is coming for Google Pay (Android) “this spring”, but today’s rollout seems to support Apple Pay only.

As noted back in February when this was first confirmed as on-the-way, Clipper works with Apple’s “Express Transit” feature. That’s just a fancy way to say that you can tap-to-pay with the digital Clipper card without first needing to punch in your phone’s PIN or using FaceID. On certain newer iPhones, it also lets you keep using the Clipper card for a few hours after your battery has died; a wonderful thing in a pinch, but probably not something you want to rely on regularly.
