Colton Underwood told Robin Roberts on “Good Morning America” that he is gay in an interview that aired Wednesday morning.

“This year’s been a lot for a lot of people and it’s probably made a lot of people look at themselves in the year and figure out who they are,” Underwood said. “I’ve ran from myself for a long time, I’ve hated myself for a long time. I’m gay. I came to terms with that earlier this year, and the next step in all of this was sort of letting people know. I’m the happiest and healthiest I’ve ever been in my life. That means the world to me.”

The former star of ABC’s “The Bachelor” said that he wishes he had accepted his truth sooner.

“I’ve had sort of a range of responses and the underlying most common was ‘I wish you would have told me sooner’ and when I hear that I wish I would have had faith in my friends and family a little bit more,” Underwood said. “The only reason I’m sitting down with you today is because I have the love and support of my friends and my family.

Underwood starred on season 23 of the popular dating show. He made headlines at the time for being open about remaining a virgin. The Indiana native was named after the Indianapolis Colts, and he went on to play for three NFL teams, including the San Diego Chargers, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Oakland Raiders.

He formely was in a high-profile relationship with olympic gymnast Aly Raisman. During his time on the show he quickly fell in love with contestant Cassie Randolph and following the show’s finale they dated until April 2020. Randolph filed a restraining around that time against Underwood but eventually she dropped it.

Underwood spoke about questioning his sexuality in his book, “The First Time: Finding Myself and Looking for Love on Reality TV.”

In it he said dating Rudolph helped him realize he was straight.

“[The show taught me] that I’m straight and I’m very, very attracted to Cassie and women — but it would have been OK if it would have been the other way too,” Underwood told “Entertainment Tonight.” “I think that’s the biggest message I have for people.”

Harvey Weinstein’s attorney cites COVID, health issues in bid to keep ex-producer out of LA courtroom https://www.dailynews.com/2021/04/12/harvey-weinsteins-attorney-cites-covid-health-issues-in-bid-to-keep-ex-producer-out-of-la-courtroom/ LOS ANGELES — Harvey Weinstein is reportedly facing a sealed indictment that would accelerate his trial on sexual assault charges in Los Angeles and plans to object to extradition during a hearing Monday in New York.

Weinstein’s L.A.-based defense lawyer, Mark Werksman, told the New York Daily News that it’s not safe for his 69-year-old client to travel to Los Angeles County given the coronavirus pandemic.

“He’s got serious medical impairments. He has spinal stenosis. He can’t walk. He’s in a wheelchair. He has macular degeneration,” Werksman told the newspaper. “He has procedures and medical appointments already in the system where he is now.”

The disgraced former Hollywood producer is serving a 23-year sentence in New York after being convicted of a criminal sex act against a former production assistant and raping an aspiring actress. He is appealing that conviction.

Sources told the NY Daily News and the Los Angeles Times that the new indictment includes the same 11 counts already filed against Weinstein and covers the same five victims, but an indictment would allow prosecutors to avoid the need for a preliminary hearing.

The indictment reportedly revises the dates of crimes against one of the five women, all of whom testified during grand jury hearings, according to The Times.

Weinstein has been accused of assault by dozens of women and previously charged in Los Angeles with four counts each of forcible rape and forcible oral copulation, two counts of sexual battery and one count of sexual penetration by force during crimes that allegedly took place between 2004 and 2013. The first charges were filed in January 2020 and were amended most recently in October.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, which said in October that Weinstein could face up to 140 years in prison if convicted as charged on the West Coast counts, had no comment on Monday’s report of an indictment.

Werksman told The Times that the indictment was based on “stale, unsubstantiated, uncorroborated, uncredible allegations that arose during the hysteria of the #MeToo movement,” and expressed confident that his client would be acquitted due to a lack of credible evidence.

DMX, the rapper and actor known for iconic hip-hop songs and a gruff delivery, is dead at 50 https://www.dailynews.com/2021/04/09/rapper-actor-dmx-known-for-gruff-delivery-dead-at-50/ By JONATHAN LANDRUM Jr. and JENNIFER PELTZ | The Associated Press

DMX, the raspy-voiced hip-hop artist who produced the songs “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem” and “Party Up (Up in Here)” and who rapped with a trademark delivery that was often paired with growls, barks and “What!” as an ad-lib, has died, according to a statement from his family. He was 50.

The Grammy-nominated performer died after suffering “catastrophic cardiac arrest,” according to the hospital in White Plains, New York, where he died. He was rushed there from his home April 2.

A statement from relatives said he died “with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days.”

The rapper, whose real name is Earl Simmons, had struggled with drug addiction since his teenage years. His lawyer, Murray Richman, had earlier said he could not confirm reports that DMX overdosed.

DMX made a splash in rap music in 1998 with his first studio album, “It’s Dark and Hell is Hot,” which debuted No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The multiplatinum-selling album was anchored by several hits including “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem,” “Get At Me Dog,” “Stop Being Greedy” and “How It’s Goin’ Down.”

DMX followed up with four straight chart-topping albums including “… And Then There Was X,” “Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood,” “The Great Depression” and “Grand Champ.” He released seven albums, earned three Grammy nominations and was named favorite rap/hip-hop artist at the 2000 American Music Awards.

DMX arrived on the rap scene around the same time as Jay-Z, Ja Rule and others who dominated the charts and emerged as platinum-selling acts. They were all part of rap crews, too: DMX fronted the Ruff Ryders collective, which helped launch the careers of Grammy winners Eve and Swizz Beatz, and relaunch The Lox, formerly signed to Bad Boy Records. Ruff Ryders had success on the charts and on radio with its “Ryde or Die” compilation albums.

Along with his musical career, DMX paved his way as an actor. He starred in the 1998 film “Belly” and appeared in 2000′s “Romeo Must Die” with Jet Li and Aaliyah. DMX and Aaliyah teamed up for “Come Back in One Piece” on the film’s soundtrack.

The rapper would later open Aaliyah’s tribute music video, “Miss You,” alongside her other friends and collaborators, including Missy Elliott, Lil’ Kim and Queen Latifah, after Aaliyah’s 2001 death in a plane crash at age 22.

The rapper also starred in 2001′s “Exit Wounds” with Steven Seagal and 2003′s “Cradle 2 the Grave” with Li.

But while DMX made his mark as one of hip-hop’s most recognizable names for his rap artistry and as an actor, the rapper was personally stifled by his legal battles — he was repeatedly arrested and jailed within a decade — and drug addiction. His addiction first took hold at age 14 when smoked a marijuana cigarette that was laced with cocaine.

DMX pleaded guilty in 2004 after he posed as an undercover federal agent a nd crashed his SUV through a security gate at New York’s Kennedy Airport. He was arrested in 2008 on drug and animal cruelty charges following an overnight raid on his house in Phoenix. He tried to barricade himself in his bedroom but emerged when a SWAT team entered his home.

In 2010, he was sentenced to a year in prison for violating terms of his probation. After he was admitted to rehab numerous times over the next year, he said he had finally beat his drug addiction.

First responders helped bring DMX back to life after he was found in a hotel parking lot in New York in 2016. The rapper said he suffered from asthma.

A couple years later, DMX was sentenced to a year in prison for tax fraud. Prosecutors said he concocted a multiyear scheme to hide millions of dollars in income from the IRS and get around nearly $2 million in tax liabilities.

After his release, DMX planned a 32-date tour to mark the 20th anniversary of “It’s Dark and Hell is Hot.” But the rapper canceled a series of shows to check himself into a rehab facility in 2019. In an Instagram post, his team said he apologized for the canceled shows and thanked his fans for the continued support.

Besides his legal troubles, DMX took the initiative to help the less fortunate. He gave a group of Philadelphia men advice during a surprise appearance at a homeless support group meeting in 2017, and helped a Maine family with its back-to-school purchases a couple years later.

Last year, DMX faced off against Snoop Dogg in a Verzuz battle, which drew more than 500,000 viewers.

He is survived by his 15 children and mother.

Legal expert explains why Britney Spears’ unprecedented conservatorship case is ‘highly abnormal’ https://www.dailynews.com/2021/04/07/britney-spears-legal-expert-explains-why-pop-stars-unprecedented-conservatorship-case-is-highly-abnormal/ By Elizabeth Wagmeister | Variety

For Britney Spears‘ legions of fans across the globe, the #FreeBritney movement has been top of mind for years. But in recent months, the hashtag has become more prominent with the release of Hulu’s New York Times-produced documentary, “Framing Britney Spears,” which debuted as the pop star’s legal proceedings over her conservatorship have persisted.

The crux of the buzzy documentary is the peculiar position Spears has been placed under for the past 13 years: She is an international star, stable enough to make music and millions of dollars for herself and others, but yet is being told by the court that she cannot have control of her own life, which is being monitored by her father, Jamie Spears, who has been in charge of her conservatorship since he appointed himself in 2008.

The new doc is one of the most talked-about projects of the year, and has not only brought to light Spears’ highly controversial conservatorship case, but also the complexities of the conservatorship system as a whole.

Stars like Sarah Jessica Parker, Howard Stern, Bette Midler, Kim Kardashian and Miley Cyrus have lent their support to the star, whose case has even caught the attention of House Republicans, who are urging congress to hold a hearing to #FreeBritney.

In the midst of a long-running legal battle, Spears and her court-appointed attorney are trying to remove her father from being her conservator. Spears’ lawyer has stated that his client is “afraid” of her father and refuses to perform until he is removed from the position. The elder Spears is currently his daughter’s co-conservator, but just last week, an attorney for the Princess of Pop formally requested her father’s resignation from the role, filing a petition for Jodi Montgomery to replace him as the permanent conservator.

While the 39-year-old Spears has remained largely silent over her conservatorship, last week, she posted on her highly-watched Instagram to break her silence on the documentary. “I didn’t watch the documentary but from what I did see of it I was embarrassed by the light they put me in,” Spears’ Instagram caption read. “I cried for two weeks and well…I still cry sometimes!!!!” (Filmmakers for the doc told Variety they tried every way to get to Spears to ask for her participation, but never got a response from the singer’s camp.)

“This is a very abnormal situation,” says legal expert, Sarah Wentz, a partner at the firm Fox Rothschild, who represents high-profile and high-net-worth individuals and specializes in conservatorships, guardianships and estates. The attorney has never worked with Spears and has no affiliation to her conservatorship case.

“There is a very high standard to prove that someone is unable to manage their financial affairs. In the cases I’ve had, most of them have had early onset dementia or Alzheimers,” Wentz says. “The people that I’ve had conservatorships over could not go out and present awards at awards shows or perform in front of a large audience.”

Variety spoke to Wentz about the conservatorship system and Britney Spears’ case.

There are two types of conservatorships: over a person and over an estate. Britney Spears is under both. What exactly is a conservatorship of a person?

A conservator over a person is where someone is appointed to make sure that the person has proper physical health, food, clothing and shelter needs being met. Someone is monitoring daily to make sure that the person is being fed and clothed properly. It’s honestly such a high standard, we almost always see this in cases where a person is mental handicapped in a way where they don’t know how to shower themselves or feed themselves. It’s a pretty dramatic situation.

What exactly is a conservatorship over an estate?

A conservator of an estate is appointed if a court determines that someone is unable to manage his or her financial resources, resist fraud or undue influence. When you say that somebody is unable to manage their own financial affairs, I think it’s important to point out that we’re not all expected to be investment professionals — most of us don’t manage our financial portfolio because we use investors, so, Britney might not be able to invest her own money, but she can certainly hire a financial investment advisor or an accountant who could do that on her behalf. In this case, they have to be able to say that she’s incapable of even hiring a team around her that can handle her financial resources.

A conservatorship is supposed to be an absolute last resort, correct?

Absolutely. There are other steps we take first. Power of attorney and a trust are ways that we avoid this much more onerous process of a conservatorship where you actually have to go into court. This would be the absolute last resort.

You don’t work with Britney and never have been involved with her case, but with your legal expertise of conservatorships and estates, does it appear that something is not right with her case?

I would have had to have seen the evidence that they presented in front of the court to determine if it wasn’t right. But what I will say is that it is highly unusual, which makes me think that there must be shocking, overwhelming evidence to show that this is necessary. This just doesn’t happen. The standard under California law is that there is clear and convincing evidence, so that’s a high bar — that means that they’ve determined there is no way for her to manage her financial affairs without someone completely removing them from her own hands. I can’t say if it’s wrong, but the evidence would have to be so over-the-top and egregious for a judge to let this be continuing for as long as it has.

A major question after viewing the documentary is what exactly is in the documents. Of course, only the judge and Britney’s doctors have that information, but could you even think of a possibility of what that evidence might contain?

I can’t say because I’m not working on this case, but when I think of what a judge must have seen to keep this in place, it makes me think there must be something that’s over the top that they would think that’s absolute necessary. But to play devil’s advocate, if that is the case, then why would her lawyers be asking to unseal the documents? If there was something so egregious, then her lawyers must know that if they unseal the records, all of this stuff is going to come out, so that fights against the argument that there is all of this egregious evidence because her lawyers are arguing that the documents should be unsealed to the public.

Is it typical that all of the documents would be sealed, as they are in Britney’s case?

No, absolutely not. A lot of times, you try to seal things, especially with celebrity clients, but they won’t. It’s not very common.

When are conservatorships typically used?

I have seen conservatorships used when somebody was in a coma, I’ve had dozens of them where the people had significant cognitive impairment from a stroke or dementia and are unable to speak for themselves and unable to write. If somebody is developmentally disabled, when they turn 18, frequently their parents, to continue helping them because they’re now a legal adult, will get a conservatorship put in place, if there are assets that they need to manage for the disabled individual.

Do conservatorships ever deal with individuals battling drug addiction?

I have had a couple of situations where people had really bad drugs problems and the family said that the person was a danger to themselves, so they tried to get a conservator, but I always tell families in that situation that they should prepare for this not to work because if the person can pull it together in court and convince a judge that they are fine mentally, the judge will say no. I have had a couple of cases where I’ve told the families that the judge will not approve a conservator, but since the person had been to rehab and it didn’t work, the family wanted to try — I’ve never had one of those cases be successful.

It sounds like it’s an extremely high bar for a judge to approve a conservatorship.

It would be fascinating to see what the judge thought was so clear and convincing that wouldn’t allow Britney to make her own decisions because technically, you’re allowed to blow your money and you’re allowed to make stupid decisions in life, whether it’s marrying the wrong person or giving all of your money away. As long as you have the ability to tell the judge, “I wanted to do this,” then you’re allowed to do it.

Britney was 26 years old when she was placed under a conservatorship in 2008. How rare is it that somebody that age would be placed under a conservatorship?

Extremely.

Isn’t is very plausible that the original circumstance that put Britney under a conservatorship, at 26, could change over the course of 13 years? And wouldn’t that be a reason that the court might consider removing her from a conservatorship?

Absolutely, and at any given point, you could petition to have a conservatorship removed because you argue that you have the capacity to manage your financial affairs. She could never be barred from asking the court to undo this because the situation could change day to day.

Why is it so difficult to get out of a conservatorship?

It shouldn’t be. To end a conservatorship of an estate, a judge just needs to determine that the person is able to handle their own financial affairs. Period. So, you just have to provide proof that you can handle your own financial affairs.

Is it an option to prove to a judge that you’re capable of hiring someone to handle your financial affairs for you?

Absolutely. You would need to prove to the judge that you understand what was fraud or undue influence, and then could hire the right person to handle your finances. Right now, Bessemer Trust is a co-conservator on Britney’s estate. Well, Britney Spears could hire Bessemer Trust to invest her money. They do that for wealthy individuals. They don’t need to be under a conservatorship. She could literally be working with the same people who are investing her money right now to do that for her, and it might not look any different than what they are doing right now for her, except she would be the one calling those shots.

How can you prove that you can get out of a conservatorship over a person?

You need to prove that you can manage your own care needs — housing, clothing, showering and things like that. For example, if someone has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and they are on 10 different types of medication and have to take those drugs daily, they might have to show that they can manage those medications. I think of a situation I just had with a 94-year-old who certainly couldn’t manage all of his medications, but he had 24-hour caregivers that he hired to be in his house to manage all of his medications, and he didn’t need to be under a conservatorship because he was capable of hiring people. So, even in the situation with a 94-year-old who couldn’t read his own medicine bottles, we still set up a way that worked. You don’t just jump into a conservatorship because you can’t personally handle something yourself and may need some help to get you there.

Have you ever successfully terminated a conservatorship for any of your clients?

I’ve never had a situation to end a conservatorship where everyone wasn’t on board. I just did one where we terminated the conservatorship, and we had a hearing, the judge asked a lot of questions, a person spoke on the person’s behalf and fielded the questions, and at the end of the day, they terminated it. This particular individual had a medical diagnosis of being developmentally disabled, but was high functioning. We had a conservatorship when he turned 18 and he is in his mid-20s now, and we were able to monitor that period of time to prove that he was okay to manage his financial affairs. Now, we weren’t dealing with $60 million, but it is the same process.

So, it is technically possible to get out of a conservatorship, but how difficult is it?

Most conservatorships are for people who have something like Alzheimer’s so they end up passing away, so it’s very rare that you terminate them because the reason they need it in the first place is because they don’t get better so, this is highly abnormal in the first place. But because I just had that case where we terminated, it is possible — but I can’t think of another circumstance where we terminated.

Are you saying that the case you recently worked on is the only conservatorship you’ve ever terminated in your entire legal career?

I can count on one hand how many times I’ve gotten a conservatorship terminated. That recent one, plus another one maybe 15 years ago.

Britney was put under her conservatorship in 2007, after she shaved her head and hit a paparazzi’s car with an umbrella. To be honest, a lot of celebrities have had public scandals and “breakdowns,” but I can’t think of any other celebrity who is under a conservatorship.

If you look at all of the people who have had ups and downs in the media, if those are the standards, then half of Hollywood should be under a conservatorship. I don’t want to pick any names, but you can think of countless situations where someone has acted out and there is footage of them doing so. That happens to a good portion of people who are subjected to the same type of media scrutiny as Britney, so I don’t know what’s so different about her. Why do all these other people get to, quite frankly, make dumb decisions with their estate, but with hers, we are going to force her into this situation?

Britney has not asked to get out of her conservatorship. She has only asked to remove her father from being in charge of her conservatorship. How difficult is it to remove a conservator?

That’s what I think she is struggling against right now. Even if she might have personal issues with her father, there is probably no evidence that he’s legally done anything wrong. The court may say he’s been doing a fine job because there is no evidence that he hasn’t been increasing the value of the estate, making the right investment decisions and looking out for her best interest, so the court might not have any grounds to remove him. Now, if there are personal problems, a court could certainly say that even though he’s not done anything wrong, it’s just a toxic situation. That a little harder to do though because the only way to truly remove somebody is for cause that they’ve done something wrong — and not getting along with your parent is not enough reason for cause for a court to remove him.

Britney’s lawyer has said that she is afraid of her father and will not perform until her father is removed. What does that indicate to you?

I’m not saying it’s a winning argument, but I think they can make an argument that if she’s absolutely unwilling to perform, due to his involvement, that having him there is actually harming the overall conservatorship estate because she won’t be able to make money — as long as she refuses to put more money in his hands to manage, then it’s causing financial harm to her individually, so they need to remove him to be acting in her best interest. I’m guessing that’s where they’re going with that.

What is a typical salary for conservators?

It’s usually an annual percentage. Usually, they charge 1-2% of the assets under management. In Britney’s case, that’s real money.

The documentary raises questions about Jamie Spears’ motives, given the money that is being made in his role as her conservator. Do you think those are valid questions?

What I can say is that if she was having such strain with him, I don’t know why someone else can’t do this for her. I don’t know why it has to be him. There are other qualified people out there that could serve as a conservator. Knowing that there are other professionals who could do that, you could question what his motives are if he has to stay involved.

The New York Times published court documents last week that show Britney is paying roughly $10,000 per work day for her father’s lawyers to fight against her in court. On top of that, she also has to pay for her own legal team that is appointed by the court. Is it typical for people under a conservatorship to pay for both sides of the legal battle?

Yes, unfortunately. If you were to find that there was wrongdoing, then you could try to charge them personally for the fees it took to get them out. But there would have to be a specific allegation of fraud, in order to ask the court that the person be charged with that expense.

Is there someone in charge of making sure conservators don’t breach their duties or abuse their position?

No. But you have to file accountings under a conservatorship with the court, and that is when the court looks at what has been going on and what money has been spent on. If there are questions, the court would come back and ask for more detail and documentation on certain expenses and the court will actually hear testimony.

Britney wanted to hire her own attorney, but she was told that she was mentally unfit to do so, which is why she has a court-appointed attorney. The attorney she met with said on-camera in the documentary that he believed Britney to be fit to hire him. Can you explain that process?

That’s the double-edged sword, and maybe part of the reason why it might be so difficult to get out of this. If you’re unfit to manage your own financial affairs, then you’re unfit to enter into a contract, which would include hiring a lawyer. Legally, that attorney wouldn’t be able to enter into an engagement letter with her. It’s a tricky situation.

Any time there is a high-profile celebrity case, media attention is not supposed to impact what’s happening in the courtroom. But in this case, there is an entire movement with people saying Britney is being held against her will. Would a judge ever consider what’s happening in the documentary or on social media?

As a judge, you can’t not be aware that this stuff is going on, but unless its presented in the case, you can’t use it. But obviously, any judge on this case must be aware and is looking at it very, very carefully.

Britney’s lawyer acknowledged the fans and the #FreeBritney campaign in a legal letter filed last fall. What do you think is the legal strategy there?

In a way, I think they are trying to use it to show the judge, just to make sure that they’re being particularly careful to look at all the evidence that is out there — but Britney’s lawyers have to be really careful in what they submit because some of the conspiracy theory stuff would discredit the case, so they want to be very selective in what they might put in front of the judge. On the other side, her father’s lawyers could perhaps be submitting the other side of that, showing that it’s just a bunch of conspiracy theorists or however they might be trying to paint the #FreeBritney movement.

Last Wednesday, Villanueva announced the investigation into the Rancho Palos Verdes rollover crash had been completed — but that details were being withheld due to privacy issues.

“A cause has been determined, the investigation has concluded,” Villanueva said at the time. “However, we have reached out to Tiger Woods and his personnel. There’s some privacy issues on releasing information on the investigation, and we’re going to ask them if they waive the privacy. Then we’ll be able to do a full release on all the information regarding the accident.”

Meanwhile, TMZ, citing “sources with direct knowledge,” reported this morning that excessive speed was the cause.

“Tiger was speeding when he lost control of his SUV, and we’re told the sheriff is hanging the cause of the accident squarely on speed,” TMZ said.

The website also said the “black box” in the vehicle shows Woods accelerated at the time of the crash.

It was not clear if Woods was talking or texting on his cell phone at the time of the crash. According to the TMZ report, the Sheriff’s Department did not get a warrant to check the cell phone records — feeling it did not have probable cause.

Villanueva said investigators obtained the black box from the Genesis GV80 SUV Woods was driving at 7:12 a.m. Feb. 23 when he struck the center median on northbound Hawthorne Boulevard at Blackhorse Road. The SUV careened across the southbound lanes, sheered off a tree and flipped over before coming to rest on its side about 30 yards off the side of the road.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash and no other injuries were reported. The first person to arrive at the scene told sheriff’s officials Woods was unconscious inside the vehicle. The first sheriff’s deputy to respond found the 45-year-old golfing great awake and responsive, but suffering from severe leg injuries.

Woods was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he underwent surgery for multiple fractures to his right leg and ankle. He was later transferred to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for follow-up work. He announced March 16 that he had been released from the hospital and returned to his home in Florida.

“Happy to report that I am back home and continuing my recovery,” Woods wrote in a message on his Twitter page. “I am so grateful for the outpouring of support and encouragement that I have received over the past few weeks.

“Thank you to the incredible surgeons, doctors, nurses and staff at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. You have all taken such great care of me and I cannot thank you enough. I will be recovering at home and working on getting stronger every day.”

No further information about his medical recovery has been released, and it was unclear if or when Woods might be able to return to the golf course.

Woods lives in Florida but was in the Southland at the time of the crash after hosting the Genesis Invitational golf tournament at The Riviera Country Club.

LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva will provide an update Wednesday morning on the investigation into the crash that seriously injured pro golfer Tiger Woods.

Last Wednesday, Villanueva announced the investigation into the Rancho Palos Verdes rollover crash had been completed but that details were being withheld due to privacy issues.

“A cause has been determined, the investigation has concluded,” Villanueva said. “However, we have reached out to Tiger Woods and his personnel. There’s some privacy issues on releasing information on the investigation, and we’re going to ask them if they waive the privacy. Then we’ll be able to do a full release on all the information regarding the accident.”

How Leslie Jordan made it big: ‘If you want to get sober, try 27 days in county jail’ https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2021/apr/02/how-leslie-jordan-made-it-big-if-you-want-to-get-sober-try-27-days-in-county-jail After starring in Will & Grace and American Horror Story, his life took a twist in lockdown and he became an Instagram superstar at 65. He discusses fame, fun and sharing a cell with Robert Downey Jr

For a man of such diminutive stature – 4ft 11in in shoes – Leslie Jordan loves a tall tale. A cursory question at the start of our interview about where he is calling from, for example, results in this glorious flight of fancy: “I got on a bus in 1982, from the hills of Tennessee. I had $1,200 sewn into my underpants by my mother and I arrived in LA and found West Hollywood, which is where I currently live.”

Such vivid storytelling – delivered in a honey-thick southern drawl, accentuated perfectly by a knowing campness – is part of the reason for Jordan’s unexpected career boost at 65. A jobbing actor best known for his role in American Horror Story and his Emmy-winning turn as Beverly Leslie, the acid-tongued rival of Megan Mullally’s Karen in Will & Grace, Jordan spent most of 2020 becoming an accidental internet sensation, racking up 5.6 million Instagram followers – including the likes of Rihanna and Lily Allen – thanks to his charmingly chaotic videos.

Celebrity video request site Cameo reaches unicorn status with $100M raise http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Techcrunch/~3/Wsj5AkLpX8Q/ Cameo, the celebrity video site you’re probably familiar with if you’ve celebrated a birthday in the last three years, announced this morning that it’s raised a $100M Series C. The round, which was led by Jonathan Turner with e.ventures, puts the site’s value at just north of $1 billion.

Cameo has been building a good deal of steam in recent years, but the service is among those that managed to get a major boost amid the pandemic, as celebrities and normals alike suddenly found themselves with a lot more time on their hands.

“The pandemic put extra stress on the already unstable business models supporting talent across sports and entertainment ecosystems,” CEO Steven Galanis said in a Medium post tied to the news. “It catalyzed a massive shift in awareness and widespread adoption of direct-to-fan models, which has, in turn, created a new foundation for fan engagement. We exist in an entirely different world today — one in which talent actually want to connect more deeply with their fans, and fans expect unprecedented access to the talent they admire most. This funding will help us create the access and connections that will define the future of the ‘connection economy’ on a global scale.”

This latest round more than doubles the service’s total funding, bringing it up to $165 million. Google Ventures, Amazon Alexa Fund, UTA, SoftBank Vision Fund 2, Valor Equity Partners and Counterpoint Global (Morgan Stanley) join existing investors, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Kleiner Perkins, The Chernin Group, Origin Venture and Spark Capital. There are also some “talent investors” on board, as well, including skateboarding legend, Tony Hawk. Because, you know, Cameo.

Cameo says some 80% of its standard video requests are booked as gifts, to celebrate things like birthdays. In total, around two million videos have been created through the offering. But the site is looking to grow into additional categories. Last year it added the ability to book celebrities as guests for Zoom video chats (a very pandemic-focused offering).

Some of the funding will go toward ramping up Cameo for Business (C4B), which brings celebrity videos to events and conferences, as well as ads and sales. Effectively, the service works as a pipeline between businesses and famous people. Ryan Fischer was wounded Feb. 24 while walking three of the singer’s dogs on the 1500 block of North Sierra Bonita Avenue near Sunset Boulevard. No suspects have been named.

Fischer said in a lengthy Instagram post he had been recovering well when his lung collapsed and he had to have surgery.

“With the chest tube removed (which I can only equate to an alien baby extraction) and my blood oxygen stable, the journey outside to recover with loved ones began.”

He went on to say he began to experience “strange hissing and glugging (sounds) coming from my chest every time I took a breath.

“It became quite clear that my lung was not healing and the bullet wound had scarred my tissue like a burn.”

Details of when the surgery took place were not disclosed.

Fisher was at recovering at home, the Daily Mail reported.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, a woman who said she found the dogs contacted the pop star’s staff and later met with the department’s Robbery-Homicide detectives at the department’s Olympic Station, where she returned the pair.

The department said it would keep confidential the location where the dogs were found and the woman’s name, “due to the active criminal investigation and for her safety.”

Lady Gaga, who is in Italy filming a movie, had offered a $500,000 reward for their safe return and praised her Fischer, saying he risked his life “to fight for our family. You’re forever a hero.”

It was not clear if the woman who turned the dogs over to police was given the reward money.

Police described the two suspects as men about 20 to 25 years old, one with blond dreadlocks and wearing a black hoodie and carrying a semi-automatic handgun. The other was clad in dark clothing. They fled the scene in a four-door Nissan Altima, according to the LAPD.

Silicon Valley tech CEO explains why he hired Prince Harry https://www.dailynews.com/2021/03/24/silicon-valley-tech-ceo-explains-why-he-hired-prince-harry/ By Julia Chatterley and Ramishah Maruf | CNN Business

Prince Harry has found a new gig: The Duke of Sussex joined a startup called BetterUp as chief impact officer, which provides mental health services and coaching to clients online. The job announcement came weeks after he and wife Meghan Markle’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which they spoke on the mental health struggles that came with royal life.

First Move’s Julia Chatterley spoke to CEO Alexi Robichaux about Harry’s role at BetterUp and the company’s mission.

CNN’s parent company WarnerMedia is a client of BetterUp.

Explain the mission please. I read it as providing a gym for mental health. What does that mean?

Prince Harry has found a new gig: The Duke of Sussex joined a startup called BetterUp as chief impact officer, which provides mental health services and coaching to clients online.(BetterUp)

Robichaux: The easiest way to think about BetterUp is that we’re taking what was traditionally been thought of as competitive coaching and putting that into the pockets of workers and professionals worldwide. We are a professional, mobile platform that connects individuals with one-on-one dedicated coaching they can do related to leadership, sleep, nutrition and parenting. They do this over video chat and text message from the convenience of their phone.

You say it’s A.I. enabled. What does that mean in practice?

Robichaux: You can think of eHarmony. We use machine learning and artificial intelligence to help find the coaches that are the right match for you. We look across 120 variables from the data you give us through a quick questionnaire. It feels natural, comfortable, energizing, and it feels safe.

So explain Prince Harry’s role. What is a chief impact officer?

Robichaux: We came to the title together. We were organically having these conversations how the mission of BetterUp is bigger than BetterUp. He’s been doing this work in his own life for years. We can change the global dialogue to not think of mental health as the absence of mental illness, but to think about mental health as performance and realizing your potential. That is a huge global impact that BetterUp can be part of. He can keep us accountable and also accelerate that by expanding our global community, reach, and influencing everything from our product experience to helping partner with companies and organizations globally to expand our impact around the world.

What was it about his experience and CV that makes you believe he is the right person for this role?

Robichaux: First and foremost, it’s who he is as a person. I was so impressed with his genuine and sincere desire to be of service and to make a positive impact in the world. Secondly, he’s done the work, from Heads Together to the Invictus games. He has an incredible track record related to advancing this mission of mental fitness. Long before we had the opportunity meeting him, I had always had a daydream that maybe we would be fortunate enough to work with someone like him, who’s been one of the leading forces in the world for mental health. We could not have thought of someone better for this role and we’re thrilled to work with him.

[vemba-video id=”business/2021/03/24/prince-harry-betterup-ceo-alexi-robichaux.cnnbusiness”]

Critics will look at this and say it’s a great whopping PR stunt. When you look at the Oprah Winfrey interview, do you worry he could be a distraction for the broader business?

Related Articles

Robichaux: I think the main thing is sure, we’ll take the PR. That’s not why we started working with Prince Harry. His insight and unique experiences is hard to put into words. That’s where we’re focused and designed the role around.

How much is Prince Harry going to get paid?

Robichaux: As you can imagine, we don’t disclose anyone’s compensation, so we’re not able to comment on that.

Warner Bros.

  • Actors don't get paid like they used to, but some can still negotiate huge deals.
  • Actors like Will Smith and Ryan Reynolds have struck big with Netflix movies.
  • Robert Downey Jr. was the highest-paid actor of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by far.
  • See more stories on Insider's business page.

It's rare for actors to rake in huge salaries today, at least compared to the days when audiences were drawn to a movie primarily based on its leading star.

Years ago, if a certain actor's name were attached to a movie, it was almost a guaranteed success. Stars like Will Smith, Tom Cruise, and Jim Carrey were paid big bucks in the 1990s because they attracted a crowd.

For instance, Carrey was paid $20 million - a rarity today - for "The Cable Guy" in 1996, because it was expected that he could deliver a $20 million opening weekend at least.

Now, audiences are more attracted to a franchise than a star. The Marvel Cinematic Universe, for instance, dominated the box office for the last decade (to be fair, Robert Downey Jr, who played Iron Man, made bank off of those movies).

But some big name actors have the recognition and leverage to still strike gigantic deals, especially with Netflix.

Ryan Reynolds made $27 million for his Netflix movie, "Six Underground," according to Variety. Variety has also reported that Will Smith is expected to earn $35 million for the "Bright" sequel that's in the works.

Insider ranked the highest-paid movie roles of all time. Some actors - like Smith, Johnny Depp, and Tom Hanks - appear multiple times.

Below are 19 of the highest paid movie roles of all time, ranked:

Leaked Facebook moderation rules show the company is more lenient on bullying if the abuse is directed at celebrities http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/typepad/alleyinsider/silicon_alley_insider/~3/i8JZ8UEZSBU/leaked-facebook-moderation-guidelines-famous-people-abuse-2021-3 Meghan Markle has been the target of intense abuse on social media.

DANIEL LEAL-OLIVAS/WPA Pool/Getty Images

  • The Guardian obtained a leaked set of Facebook moderation guidelines.
  • The document shows how it gives "public figures" fewer bullying protections than private individuals.
  • "Public figures" covers a wide array of people, including journalists and those with 100,000+ followers.
  • See more stories on Insider's business page.

A 300-page document leaked to The Guardian reveals how Facebook trains its moderators to classify and remove abusive content.

The document, which is from December 2020, lays out Facebook's policy for its army of moderators. It shows that Facebook applies its bullying and harassment policy differently to famous people compared to private individuals.

People defined as "Public figures" can have abuse targeted at them that Facebook would ordinarily take down, including "calls for [their] death." In the guidance for moderators, Facebook said it permits this because it wants to "allow discussion, which often includes critical commentary of people who are featured in the news."

It adds that moderators should remove attacks that are "severe" or which tag the person directly.

"For private individuals, our protection goes further: we remove content that's meant to degrade or shame, including, for example, claims about someone's sexual activity," the guidance said.

Some celebrities, including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, have criticised social media companies for the levels of abuse they receive on their platforms.

Read more: Facebook says it removed more than 1.3 billion fake accounts in the months surrounding the 2020 election

The definition of a person's fame boils down to how often they appear in the news. "People who are mentioned in the title, subtitle or preview of five or more news articles or media pieces within the last two years," is Facebook's definition - although it makes a blanket exception for people under the age of 13.

The documents also classify people with more than 100,000 followers online as "public figures."

Facebook's definition of "public figures" is not purely based on fame - all politicians count, as well as journalists.

There is also an exception given for "involuntary" public figures, which Facebook defines as people who: "are not true celebrities, and who have not engaged with their fame, UNLESS they have been accused of criminal activity."

Responding to The Guardian's report, a Facebook spokesperson told Insider: "We think it's important to allow critical discussion of politicians and other people in the public eye. But that doesn't mean we allow people to abuse or harass them on our apps. We remove hate speech and threats of serious harm no matter who the target is, and we're exploring more ways to protect public figures from harassment. We regularly consult with safety experts, human rights defenders, journalists and activists to get feedback on our policies and make sure they're in the right place."

The spokesperson also emphasised that the platform draws a distinction between calls for death and death threats.

Prince Harry has a new job at Silicon Valley-based tech company https://www.dailynews.com/2021/03/23/prince-harry-has-a-new-job-at-silicon-valley-based-tech-company/ By Max Foster and Stephanie Halasz | CNN Business

Prince Harry has officially arrived in California.

The Duke of Sussex has joined Silicon Valley startup BetterUp as its chief impact officer, the company told CNN Business on Tuesday. A spokesperson for Harry also confirmed the prince’s new role.

BetterUp provides coaching and mental health services to clients. The company’s website lists Harry as part of its leadership team, describing him as a “humanitarian, military veteran, mental wellness advocate, and environmentalist.”

Harry joins the startup weeks after he and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, gave a bombshell interview to Oprah Winfrey that detailed their decision to leave the United Kingdom and step back from senior roles in the British royal family. The couple, who are living in California, also addressed the strain that royal life had on their mental health.

The Wall Street Journal was first to report that Harry had joined the startup.

At BetterUp, Harry is expected to have input into product strategy decisions and charitable contributions, and advocate publicly on topics related to mental health, the newspaper reported. The newspaper said that BetterUp declined to comment on how much Harry would be paid.

“It’s a meaningful and meaty role,” CEO Alexi Robichaux told the Wall Street Journal.

The prince expanded on his reasons for joining BetterUp in a company blog post, saying he recognized a “shared passion” for helping people in Robichaux.

“What caught my attention about BetterUp was that the company’s mission to unlock the potential in people everywhere necessitates innovation, impact, and integrity. Their team has been delivering on that work for years,” said Harry.

Harry also said he had personally benefited from coaching provided by BetterUp.

“I’ve personally found working with a BetterUp coach to be invaluable. I was matched with a truly awesome coach who has given me sound advice and a fresh perspective,” Harry said in the blog post.

Magazine’s cartoon of Queen Elizabeth kneeling on Meghan Markle’s neck sparks outrage https://www.dailynews.com/2021/03/15/magazines-cartoon-of-queen-elizabeth-kneeling-on-meghan-markles-neck-sparks-outrage/ By Amy Woodyatt and Arnaud Siad | CNN

French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo has prompted outrage after releasing a cartoon depicting the UK’s Queen Elizabeth kneeling on the neck of Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, invoking the death of George Floyd.

The cover image cartoon came days after Meghan and her husband Harry made a series of damning accusations against the royal family in an interview with Oprah Winfrey — including that the skin tone of the couple’s child, Archie, was discussed as a potential issue before he was born.

The cartoon was published Saturday (Charlie Hebdo via CNN)

The couple would not reveal who had made the remarks, but said it wasn’t Queen Elizabeth II or her husband, Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. In the interview, Meghan also described having regular suicidal thoughts during her pregnancy and brief time as a working royal, and the couple said the palace had offered Meghan and Archie inadequate security and protection.

The cartoon, published Saturday, is titled “WHY MEGHAN QUIT BUCKINGHAM,” with Meghan drawn to say: “Because I couldn’t breathe anymore!”

Halima Begum, CEO of race equality think tank the Runnymede Trust, said the cartoon was “wrong on every level.”

“The Queen as GeorgeFloyd’s murderer crushing Meghan’s neck? Meghan saying she’s unable to breathe? This doesn’t push boundaries, make anyone laugh or challenge racism. It demeans the issues & causes offence, across the board,” she said on Twitter.

Meghan and Harry’s interview prompted widespread discussions about racism both in the royal family, and in the country’s media.

Prince William this week denied the royal family is racist, telling a reporter: “We’re very much not a racist family.”

In a statement on behalf of the Queen, Buckingham Palace said Tuesday that allegations of racism made by the Sussexes were concerning and being “taken very seriously.”

Buckingham Palace and representatives for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex declined to comment on the Charlie Hebdo cartoon.

The Paris-based weekly publication, which was founded in 1970, is famous for its provocative cartoons and takedowns of politicians, public figures and religious symbols.

In 2015, brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi burst into the magazine’s newsroom and gunned down staffers, killing 12 and wounding 11 after the magazine published cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.

The attack on the magazine was part of a series of deadly attacks that killed 17 people in the French capital over three days in January 2015.

Hollywood Down Under: stars flock from US to film in Covid-free Australia https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2021/mar/12/hollywood-down-under-stars-flock-from-us-to-film-in-covid-free-australia Blessed with sunny weather, diverse locations and a ready-made film industry, Sydney and the Gold Coast have become movie powerhouses

On a warmish Wednesday evening early in the year, Paul Mescal was celebrating his birthday and everybody seemed to know. The Irish actor, famous for his neckchain and his leading role in Normal People, was in Sydney, Australia, for a new film, and the word was spreading. He was photographed running in Centennial Park. He was sighted at Tamarama Beach. He popped into an inner-city pub.

But on the list of stars now working in Australia, Mescal – in Sydney for a musical film adaptation of Carmen – is comfortably mid-level. Thanks to its relative freedom from Covid-19 and associated restrictions, Australia – blessed with diverse locations, sunny weather and a ready-made film infrastructure – has become Hollywood Down Under.

Prince William defends monarchy against racism allegation https://www.dailynews.com/2021/03/11/prince-william-defends-monarchy-against-racism-allegation/ By DANICA KIRKA | Associated Press

LONDON — Prince William insisted Thursday that his family is not racist as he became the first member of Britain’s royal family to speak out about accusations of bigotry made by Prince Harry and Meghan, his brother and sister-in-law.

William made the comments in response to questions shouted at him by reporters during a visit to an East London school. While members of the royal family often ignore such queries, William used the opportunity to address the explosive allegations that have rocked the monarchy.

“We’re very much not a racist family,” William said as his wife, Kate, walked by his side.

Buckingham Palace is struggling to quiet criticism after Harry and Meghan alleged that the duchess was the victim of racism and callous treatment during her time as a working member of the royal family. The palace tried to respond to the charges, made during an interview with U.S. TV host Oprah Winfrey, with a 61-word statement that critics called “too little, too late.”

William, second in line to the throne after his father, Prince Charles, said Thursday he hadn’t yet spoken to Harry since the interview, “but I will do.”

Harry and Meghan walked away from royal duties last year and moved to California, saying they wanted to escape the intrusive British media and live a normal life.

Meghan, who is biracial, said in the interview that she was so isolated and miserable as a working member of the royal family that she had suicidal thoughts. She also said Harry told her that member of the royal family had expressed “concerns” about the color of her baby’s skin before the birth of their son, Archie.

William and Kate toured School 21 in Stratford, east London as children returned to classes. The visit was also meant to mark the rollout to secondary schools of a mental health project Kate launched in primary schools in 2018.

An unlikely TV character’s name is at the center of Oprah’s sit-down interview with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry: ‘Peter Brady.’

Christopher Knight, the actor who portrayed the middle brother in “The Brady Bunch” television series, announced in a Facebook post on Wednesday that the wicker and acacia Burchett Outdoor Club Chairs sold by his furniture company is out of stock on sites such as Overstock and Amazon.

The furniture, from Christopher Knight Brands, sold out after it was prominently displayed during Sunday night’s bombshell interview.

“In Oprah’s sensational interview with Prince Harry and Meghan this week, who would have thought the furniture would have been noticed at all, but it was…and not even by me!” Knight wrote on Facebook. “I am honored to have the patio chairs from my collection become the seat of the most fascinating famous sit down in recent history. It would appear Meghan and Prince Harry got ‘Knighted’ in a way never anticipated.”

The set, which costs $554, was used as the couple revealed shocking allegations about racism at Buckingham Palace and why they stepped back from senior roles in the British royal family. The interview drew a massive audience with about 17.1 million viewers on Sunday night in the United States and 11 million in the United Kingdom the following day.

Although the brand’s products often show up in movies, reality TV shows and interview segments, a spokesperson said the company isn’t aware until they’re watching and seeing it themselves.

[vemba-video id=”media/2021/03/09/prince-harry-meghan-markle-oprah-cbs-this-morning-orig-jk.cnn”]

“Unlike all times prior, this time the furniture has grown beyond set dressing and become part of the story,” the spokesperson told CNN Business. “It seems everything the Royals say, do, or touch draws interest. Though we are grateful for the notoriety — the social media response has been tremendous — we remain surprised at the occurrence.”

The set of chairs is part of a collection that was introduced for the first time this season. “While it was already selling well and gaining great traction, the attention this famous interview has brought the product accelerated the sales beyond what anyone could have expected,” the spokesperson said.

On Facebook, Knight clarified that he did not design the set, citing his business partners’ “excellent taste and skills in delivering a line of furniture that is both affordable and fit for royalty — both foreign and domestic.”

Knight took a hiatus from acting in 1988 to pursue a career in business. He became a serial entrepreneur, starting a 3D graphics company and an educational products business, and later launched his furniture brand in 2012. Six years later, he debuted a lifestyle collection of curated products, including bedding, table top and glassware.

In 2019, Knight returned to the small screen for a four-part HGTV series called “A Very Brady Renovation,” featuring all six original Brady sibling cast members, the Property Brothers and other personalities.

This isn’t the first time in recent months a surprising product became the center of attention during a heavily watched broadcast. The Vermont school teacher behind the cozy mittens worn by US Sen. Bernie Sanders during President Joe Biden’s inauguration was flooded with requests from people wanting to buy a pair. Although she originally said they’re no longer for sale, Jen Ellis later auctioned three pairs for charity.

How does Cameo work? Cameo 2021 A view of the Cameo Marketplace.

Cameo

To request a Cameo, you'll need to make an account and visit the Cameo Marketplace through the Cameo website or app, where you can sort the thousands of available celebrities based on category. Once you've chosen your celebrity, you'll fill out a request form where you describe what you want your Cameo talent to do, in a maximum of 250 characters. Cameo accepts direct payment via credit card - US residents using iOS can also purchase "Cameo credits" to store in your account and exchange for videos later.

Once the request is completed, the Cameo talent has seven days to accept or deny the project. If accepted, the celebrity will record the video and Cameo will send a link to the video to the phone numbers and email addresses listed with the request. Users can download the video to keep forever and share however they like.

If the hired talent doesn't fulfill the request within a week, all charges will be restored to the buyer's wallet.

Some Cameo celebrities also offer live Zoom calls, though you can expect them to be more expensive than a standard Cameo video with the same talent. The Cameo app gives you the ability to chat with talent via direct messages as well. Chatting is a cheaper option if you just want to ask a celebrity a question or send a quick shout-out.

Business Cameos

Cameo offers a separate service for businesses looking to promote a product, or have a celebrity appear for a virtual event. Business Cameos have an average price of $1,000 but come with a different license for promotional and commercial use.

It's important to note that Business Cameos are only licensed for use for 30 days after they are created. Cameo says businesses must contact the company directly to extend the license beyond thirty days. Cameo Live sessions are also available for businesses and virtual events, with a starting price of $10,000.

Any products being sent to a celebrity for promotional purposes must be cleared through the Cameo request process in advance, and the talent is allowed to provide their honest opinion of any product they're asked to endorse.

Cameo also says that promotional videos cannot be edited, to avoid celebrity videos being used out of context. Unfortunately there are no refunds or reshoots for Promotional Cameo videos if you're unsatisfied with the final result, so be careful before you commit.

Meghan Markle complained to ITV about Piers Morgan’s comments about her mental health https://www.dailynews.com/2021/03/10/meghan-markle-complained-to-itv-about-piers-morgans-comments-about-her-mental-health/ By Max Foster | CNN Business

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, made a formal complaint to British broadcaster ITV relating to Piers Morgan’s comments about her mental health, CNN has learned.

ITV announced on Tuesday that Morgan would leave the program he hosted, “Good Morning Britain,” after he cast doubt on whether Meghan had suicidal thoughts, a major revelation from her blockbuster interview with Oprah Winfrey.

“Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain,” ITV said on Tuesday. “ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”

[vemba-video id=”business/2021/03/09/piers-morgan-storms-off-good-morning-britain-due-to-criticism-of-meghan-markle-orig.cnn-business”]

CNN understands that Meghan’s complaint to ITV concerned the impact Morgan’s comments could have on others and how it could degrade the seriousness of mental health issues. The complaint did not relate to the personal nature of Morgan’s attacks.

On Monday’s edition of “Good Morning Britain,” Morgan questioned whether the Duchess was being truthful about having suicidal thoughts. His comments sparked a huge controversy in Britain, and he was rebuked by mental health charity Mind.

UK media regulator Ofcom said it had received over 41,000 complaints about Monday’s edition of “Good Morning Britain,” and had launched an investigation under its “harm and offence rules.”

On Wednesday, Morgan said that he “still” does not believe Meghan.

“I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don’t [believe her],” Morgan tweeted. “If you did, OK. Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on. Thanks for all the love, and hate. I’m off to spend more time with my opinions.”

Piers Morgan, who prompted furious controversy and an investigation from the UK’s media regulator over his sharply critical comments of Prince Harry and Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle, will depart “Good Morning Britain,” ITV abruptly announced Tuesday.

“Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain,” ITV said in a short statement. “ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”

Morgan did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Earlier in the day, Morgan walked off the “Good Morning Britain” set after he was skewered by a co-host for his criticism of Harry and Meghan.

After Oprah Winfrey’s interview with Harry and Meghan — in which Meghan revealed she had previously had suicidal thoughts and said a royal family member had raised concerns about the skin tone of her child — Morgan made a number of comments lampooning the couple.

He said on Twitter on Monday that it was “just another reminder that anyone who criticizes Meghan Markle is deemed a racist bully.”

He also questioned on Monday’s show whether she was being truthful about having suicidal thoughts, comments he has since tried to walk back.

UK media regulator Ofcom said it had received over 41,000 complaints about the program as of Tuesday afternoon. “We have launched an investigation into Monday’s episode of Good Morning Britain under our harm and offence rules,” it said in a statement on Twitter.

On Tuesday, Morgan faced criticism from his own colleague.

“I understand that you [Morgan] don’t like Meghan Markle, you’ve made it so clear a number of times on this program,” said “Good Morning Britain” co-host Alex Beresford. “And I understand that you’ve got a personal relationship with Meghan Markle, or had one and she cut you off,” he added.

“Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I don’t think she has, but yet you continue to trash her,” Beresford said.

At that point, Morgan got up and, while walking off the set, said, “Okay, I’m done with this, sorry, no, sorry… see you later, sorry, can’t do this.”

Buckingham Palace ends silence on Harry, Meghan racism allegations https://www.dailynews.com/2021/03/09/uk-palace-ends-silence-on-harry-meghan-racism-allegations/ By DANICA KIRKA | The Associated Press

LONDON — Buckingham Palace issued a statement Tuesday, saying the family was “saddened” to learn of the struggles that Harry and Meghan revealed this week — and that they would be taken very seriously.

The statement is the first comment by the palace following Harry and Meghan’s two-hour television interview with Oprah Winfrey in which they alleged that Meghan had experienced racism and callous treatment during her time in the royal family.

“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning,’ the palace said in a statement issued on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II. “While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.’

The statement also said that “Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”

The palace often tries to stay above controversy by remaining silent and riding out the storm, but the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s charges were so damaging that the family had to respond.

Earlier, some observers had said that Buckingham Palace’s silence on the topic has only added to the furor surrounding the TV interview.

The interview, which aired Sunday night in the U.S. and a day later in Britain, has rocked the royal family and divided people around the world. While many say the allegations demonstrate the need for change inside a palace that hasn’t kept pace with the #MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements, others have criticized Harry and Meghan for dropping their bombshell while Harry’s 99-year-old grandfather, Prince Philip, remains hospitalized in London after a heart procedure.

During the two-hour interview, Meghan described feeling so isolated and miserable inside the royal family that she had suicidal thoughts, yet when she asked for mental health help from the palace’s human resources staff she was told she was not a paid employee. She also said a member of the royal family had expressed “concerns” to Harry about the color of her unborn child’s skin.

Winfrey later said Harry told her off camera that the family member wasn’t Queen Elizabeth II or Prince Philip, sparking a flurry of speculation about who it could be.

Harry also revealed the stresses the couple endured had ruptured relations with his father, Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, and his brother, Prince William, illuminating the depth of the family divisions that led the couple to step away from royal duties and move to California last year.

Prince Charles didn’t comment on the interview Tuesday during a visit to a vaccine clinic in London.

Harry’s father visited a church to see a temporary vaccine clinic in action and met with health care workers, church staff and people due to receive their vaccine jab. The visit was his first public appearance since the interview aired in the U.S. on Sunday night.

Maziya Marzook, a patient at the event, said “private matters didn’t come up at all” during Charles’ visit.

“He didn’t bring up anything,″ Marzook said. “He was more interested in how the vaccine was and how we feel.”

ROLLING HILLS ESTATES — A man found Tiger Woods unconscious in a mangled SUV after the golf star crashed the vehicle in Southern California, authorities said in court documents obtained Friday.

The man, who lives near the site in Rolling Hills Estates, heard the crash and walked to the SUV, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Johann Schloegl wrote in an affidavit.

The man told deputies that Woods would not respond to his questions. The first deputy on the scene, Carlos Gonzalez, has said Woods was able to talk to him and answer basic questions. Woods later told deputies that he did not know how the collision occurred and didn’t remember driving.

Law enforcement has not previously disclosed that Woods had been unconscious following the crash.

The information came in a statement of probable cause requesting that a search warrant be approved for the Genesis SUV’s data recorder, known as a black box. Schloegl requested data from Feb. 22 and Feb. 23. The crash occurred around 7 a.m. on Feb. 23.

“I believe the data will explain how/why the collision occurred,” Schloegl wrote.

Sheriff’s representatives have declined to say what was discovered in the recorder.

Woods was driving a 2021 GV80, made by the Hyundai luxury brand, as the tournament host of the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club. The SUV went off a Los Angeles County road and crashed on a downhill stretch known for wrecks. The crash injured Woods’ right leg, requiring surgery.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva has said Woods was driving alone in good weather, there was no evidence of impairment, and the crash was “purely an accident.”

Schloegl previously told USA Today that he did not seek a search warrant for Woods’ blood samples, which could be screened for drugs and alcohol. In 2017, Woods checked himself into a clinic for help dealing with prescription drug medication after a DUI charge in Florida.

The lengthy surgery following the crash was to stabilize shattered tibia and fibula bones in his right leg. A combination of screws and pins were used for injuries in the ankle and foot.

It was the 10th surgery of his career, and came two months after a fifth back surgery. Through it all, Woods has never gone an entire year without playing, dating back to his first PGA Tour event as a 16-year-old in high school.
