CS Soapbox: Where’s Steve Rogers in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier?

BEGIN SLIDESHOW CS Soapbox: Where’s Steve Rogers in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier?

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, a show obsessed with the legacy of “Captain America,” raises a tantalizing question: where is Steve Rogers, AKA the one true Captain America? Plot holes are a fact of life (or rather storytelling), especially in comic book movies where the laws of physics don’t apply. For those of us with too much time on our hands, plot holes keep us up at night as we refuse to accept the notion of budgetary restraints or that writers/actors are just regular people. For example, Avengers: Endgame -despite being fantastic entertainment- is riddled with inconsistencies. None more prevalent than its time travel logic and wherever old-man Steve came from.

Endgame Directors Answer the Cap Timeline Question

RELATED: CS Interview: The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Star Erin Kellyman

Near the end of Endgame, Steve -equipped with Mjölnir and the Infinity Stones- steps on a platform and prepares to travel through the Quantum Realm and return the aforementioned items to their proper place in the Multiverse. Side note: based upon a segment earlier in the film (when Hulk shits all over Back to the Future, saying “if you travel to the past, that past becomes your future, and your former present becomes the past, which can’t now be changed by your new future”), it doesn’t really make sense that Steve would be able to access all of the timelines each Avenger navigated during the “Time Heist.” Regardless, after Steve says his ominous goodbyes, Sam Wilson asks Professor Hulk, “how long is this gonna take?”

“For him as long as he needs, for us 5 seconds.”

Endgame when Captain America is going off to return the stones, the rest are expecting him to return. Bucky says his goodbye knowing Steve is not returning to his timeline,

Hulk pushes buttons, Cap disappears, and 5 seconds later he does not reappear. Instead, a now-elderly Rogers reappears on a bench nearby. Now, if he was allowed “as long as he needs,” why couldn’t he just return the stones, dance with Peggy Carter, grow old and come back on the platform in front of his friends? Having him appear off in the distance serves no purpose beyond dramatic effect.

Fans assumed he just went to the past and lived in secret for ____ years, but directors Joe and Anthony Russo have since explained that Steve’s time with Peggy was in another timeline, meaning he used his remaining Pym Particles to hop back over to the main timeline and give Sam the shield (presumably after Peggy died… again) —a plot hole that is arguably solved by having him reappear on the time-travel platform Hulk operates. So, aside from undercutting his beautiful bookend, Steve isn’t in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier because he hopped back over to whatever timeline he domesticated with Peggy.

Strange Things About Captain America And Peggy Carter's Relationship

RELATED: Listen to Henry Jackman’s First The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Track

We don’t know what kind of life Steve had in the other timeline—whether or not he kept his existence a secret. Considering his total lack of regard for the space-time continuum, maybe he didn’t. Maybe, Steve is/was very much Captain America in the other timeline, de-icing his doppelgänger for twice the fun/patriotism (go Peggy). In this case, he probably would want to live out his days in the home he’d built, surrounded by his children and grandchildren. That said, is he friends with Sam and Bucky Barnes over there? Redacted. Who cares. All we care about is the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s favorite timeline.

The less convoluted explanation is what we all expect: Steve is hiding out in the main timeline, doing Secret Avengers-esque things similar to his escapades with Sam and Natasha Romanoff following Captain America: Civil War. He might even be in Wakanda—we don’t know. However, his presumed presence on Earth (whatever numerical value it is) gives the writers free rein to bring Chris Evans back in some capacity if they ever feel so inclined. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has made it clear that while not throwing the mighty shield, his whereabouts are seemingly known to Sam and Bucky who, similarly to how they aren’t going to ask Sharon Carter if she’s the Power Broker any time soon, will remain silent until a moment presents itself. Unless…

Who Is the New Captain America on 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier'?

RELATED: New Falcon and the Winter Soldier Featurette Continues Legacy of the Shield

Steve is dead. At the end of Endgame, he’s well over 100 years old (his biological age being 39 when he travels back 74 years to be with Peggy. Roughly). While fellow super soldier Isaiah Bradley is still kicking in episode 2 of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, this may not be the case for Steve. The series takes place months after the Blip and, if Steve did pass away, the service being held in his honor at the Smithsonian when Sam donates the shield makes sense. Although, if the writers were sure of this, they would have mentioned it. What they do posit is a moon theory.

Who Is Joaquin Torres on 'Falcon and Winter Soldier'? Meet Danny Ramirez | Decider

In episode 1, “New World Order,” Joaquin Torres mentions several conspiracy theories regarding Steve’s whereabouts, including the idea that he resides on a secret moon base. Sam laughs this off and insists this is not the case. However, space is very much a thing in the MCU; during the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Nick Fury is in space with the Skrulls prepping for Marvel’s Secret Invasion (among other things). Yes, the Inhumans have a secret base on the moon but that series failed and it’s unlikely they’ll reboot those characters so soon. It’s more likely that the “secret moon base” reference alludes to the Marvel Comics mini-series Original Sin—in which Uatu the Watcher (featured in Disney+ upcoming What If…?) is murdered, Nick Fury becomes the Multiverse’s new Watcher, and Bucky becomes Earth’s secret defender, “The Man on the Wall.” In short: Cap is not on the moon.

Falcon & Winter Soldier' Reveals the MCU's New Captain America

We may hate plot holes, but Marvel Studios loves this one. Having infinite possibilities regarding Steve and what happened to him after Endgame leaves the door open to either leave his story as is or improve upon it down the road. If they ever decide to bring Evans back as Captain America they’re dealing with what is essentially a blank slate, if they never address the specifics of his departure/death, then it’ll be one of cinema’s greatest loose ends—ambiguity that will forever keep us up at night. Sleep is for the weak anyway… hopefully Disney+’s Loki offers up some clarification on the time-travel-logic…

Kevin Smith to Auction Horror Film Killroy Was Here as an NFT Kevin Smith to auction horror film Killroy Was Here as an NFT.

Kevin Smith is preparing to expand his cinematic View Askewniverse into the “cyptoverse” via Jay and Silent Bob’s Crypto Studio, an NFT gallery that will showcase art featuring the classic stoner duo. Smith will also use this new initiative to auction off the NFT for his horror anthology Killroy Was Here and allow the eventual owner an opportunity to make some cash by giving them the right to exhibit, distribute and stream the film.

MORE: Exclusive: RZA’s Nobody Action Movie Playlist!

“As an indie artist, I’m always looking for a new platform through which to tell a story,” said Smith. “And Crypto has the potential to provide that, while also intersecting with our almost 25 years of experience selling real-world collectibles online and at the brick-and-mortar Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash. Back in 1994, we took Clerks up to Sundance and sold it. Selling Killroy as an NFT feels very similar: whoever buys it could choose to monetize it traditionally or simply own a film that nobody ever sees but them. We’re not trying to raise financing by selling NFT’s for a Killroy movie; the completed Killroy movie IS the NFT. And If this works, we suddenly have a new stage on which I and other, better artists than me can tell our stories.”

Jay and Silent Bob’s Crypto Studio differs from other NFT marketplaces by operating as a boutique under its own .crypto address. Drops will be designed around Smoking’ tokens that will rotate 3D art of various Jay and Silent Bob films each month; and participants will receive an audio recording of co-owner Jason Mewes calling them a “non-fungible f**k” before identifying the color of your Smokin’ Token as either green, orange, yellow, or purple. The three Platinum Token packs feature all four Smokin’ Token colors and an exclusive Platinum Token that will allow its bearer a Crypto Cameo in Clerks III.

The Moon Knight series will be led by Golden Globe winner Oscar Isaac has joined the project to portray the titular role of Marc Spector. Isaac previously starred in Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse as well as in Sony’s Oscar-wining animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Joining him is Academy Award nominee Ethan Hawke as the villain. Hawke previously revealed that the reason he accepted to become part of the high-profile project was due to the opportunity of being able to work with Isaac.

The MCU series is being written and developed by The Umbrella Academy‘s Jeremy Slater with episodes set to be directed by Egyptian filmmaker Mohamed Diab and Synchronic duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead.

The project was officially announced by Marvel’s chief creative officer Kevin Feige last year along with two other MCU shows, Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk. This marks the iconic superheroes’ live-action debut, and all are expected to be featured in future MCU films.

Black Adam Filming Begins as Dwayne Johnson Posts First Set Photo!

BEGIN SLIDESHOW Black Adam filming begins as Dwayne Johnson posts first set photo!

Warner Bros. Pictures’ DC Extended Universe continues to extend as Black Adam filming has officially begun! Star Dwayne Johnson took to Instagram to post the first set photo which you can check out in our gallery, along with a statement which you can read below!

“History in the making, extremely excited and what a humbling moment to share with you,” Johnson stated. “Officially kicking off DAY 1 of filming our BLACK ADAM Our Director and maestro, Jaume Collet-Serra. Our Academy Award nominee (Joker), Director of Photography, Lawrence Sher. We have an all star production crew – incredibly talented, galvanized, committed and focused to raise the bar and deliver something SPECIAL for the world. This one is an honor.”

Black Adam will be led by Dwayne Johnson, who has been attached to play the titular anti-hero for over a decade now. It will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows), who worked with Johnson on Disney’s upcoming Jungle Cruise, from a screenplay written by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshiryani.

The film will also feature the live-action film introduction of the Justice Society of America, whose members will be portrayed by Pierce Brosnan (The Foreigner) as Doctor Fate, Noah Centineo (To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before) as Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell (Trinkets) as Cyclone and Aldis Hodge (One Night in Miami) as Hawkman. The film will also feature Sarah Shahi (City on a Hill), Marwan Kenzari (Aladdin) and Bodhi Sabongui (Legends of Tomorrow) though their roles are currently being kept under wraps for now.

The antihero was originally slated to make his highly-anticipated debut in 2019’s Shazam!, though the studio elected to split the characters off into individual films to allow them breathing room and proper development. Instead, they opted to tease the character with Djimon Hounsou’s original wizard Shazam narrating his origin story to Billy Batson.

Based on the DC Comics character created by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck, the film is being produced by Johnson and FlynnPicturesCo’s Beau Flynn alongside Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions, while Scott Sheldon will be overseeing the project for FlynnPictureCo.

Originally scheduled for December 2021 release, Black Adam has recently been pushed back to July 29, 2022.

We’ve got a three-horse race going in DEG’s Watched at Home Top 20 list!

Last week, the Tom Hanks drama took the crown, but now Wonder Woman 1984, which has spent the last several weeks in the No. 2 spot, has finally take the top spot. Both films have swapped places with The Croods: A New Age, which continues to linger in the Top 3 each week, proving just how much people appreciate family entertainment during this particular time.

Don’t cry too much for Hanks, though. News of the World landed at No. 2, which is actually quite astounding considering it was hanging around the bottom half of the Top 10 for a few weeks there.

Elsewhere, due to the Easter holiday, viewers tuned in for Cecil B. DeMille’s classic The Ten Commandments, though, oddly enough, didn’t view Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ or William Wyler’s Ben-Hur enough to vaunt them into the Top 20.
