Sewing Essentials To Get Started Creating Your Own Fashions http://naturemoms.com/blog/2021/04/13/sewing-essentials/

Sewing is a gratifying hobby as a skill that can save you quite a bit of money and even help you make money if you decide to sell your creations online. However, when getting started, there are a few essentials that you will need. While there are tons of extras to add to your abilities, some sewing essentials guides for beginners insist that you need a whole lot of extras that won’t serve you well while you are only getting started. So, we have listed a few essential items you will need to get started to ensure you aren’t overspending on your new hobby.

A Quality Sewing Machine

Of course, you will need a sewing machine to get started, and you will have an overwhelming selection to choose from. Instead of buying just any sewing machine, you should consider a topstitch machine and later invest in an overlocker. There are tons of sewing machines out there, so be sure to invest in a quality option to get the best results.

Fabric Scissors

Fabric scissors are essential no matter what type of fabrics you are working with when getting started. It is best to invest in a quality pair of sewing scissors or shears to snip fabric into patterns. However, you should also purchase small nail scissors or embroidery scissors to cut threads accurately. Regular scissors won’t suffice as the blades are not designed to snip fabrics but rather paper, cardboard, and other things. As a result, regular scissors won’t cut materials accurately and cause unnecessary frustration, especially if you are a beginner.

A Seam Ripper And Pins

You will need a seam ripper to undo tacking and faults without hassle. It won’t do well to cut stitching errors, even with precision nail scissors, as this will risk destroying the fabric. In addition to a seam ripper, you should also invest in quite a few pins. Quality is essential when purchasing sewing pins, as cheaper options will bend and break far too quickly.

A Tape Measure And Parchment Paper

While you will need a tape measure, the quality of this sewing essential is not entirely applicable as most are pretty much the same. When it comes to parchment paper, you can substitute this with dryer sheets. Parchment paper is excellent for beginners to cut out patterns and sew the paper to the fabric for appliqueing .

Patterns, Fabrics, And Quality Thread

It won’t be the most fantastic idea to start sewing without any patterns, so you should purchase a few patterns for the items you would like to create. Whether you would like to make a pirate costume or fashionable tops, patterns are essential. Alternatively, you can download patterns online . In addition to patterns, you will also need fabrics in suitable quantities and varieties and quality thread. The inferior quality thread will not withstand a sewing machine’s functions and are usually best for hand stitching. So it is wise to spend a bit extra on cotton threads to avoid having to rethread your sewing machine every few minutes and redoing the stitching multiple times to ensure garments hold together.

How to Make a DIY Concrete and Wood Planter http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/makeandtakes/~3/4LwzX9hJ-7o/diy-concrete-and-wood-planter Spring is in the air and so are spring crafts. Flowers are blooming and everyone is gardening, making planters with the kids, and refreshing their homes with spring decor. This DIY Concrete and Wood Planter is perfect for your front porch or back patio.

a handmade square concrete and wood planter

Make a DIY Concrete and Wood Planter

In full disclosure, this planter was a little trial and a whole lot of error before we got it right. In saying that, the first step-by-step photographs are taken from the first planter we tried. When the concrete fell apart shortly after removing the mold, we re-made it using different concrete. The process is still exactly the same, but I’ll go into a little more detail so you know what works and what doesn’t.

Which concrete to use for a planter

The first concrete planter that we made was with Sakrete High Strength Concrete Mix. We left it overnight and put heaters on it. We successfully removed the outside of the wood surround, but once we started removing the inside the outside of the concrete cracked and fell apart.

The second planter (pictured above) that we made was with Pro-Mix Accelerated Concrete Mix. This mix was labeled that it sets in 15 minutes and you could walk on it in one hour. We still left it overnight and put heaters on it to make sure. It set perfectly and we had no problem removing the wood surround.

Supplies
  • 1 sheet of coated MDF plywood
  • 2 bags of Pro-Mix Accelerated Concrete Mix
  • Saw
  • Drill
  • Screws
  • Cling wrap
  • Bucket
  • Water
  • Sander
  • 2 x 4 pine board
  • Wood stain and rag
Instructions

You need to make two boxes. These act as molds for the concrete to set in. You’ll have a larger box on the outside and a smaller box in the middle. The concrete gets poured between these two boxes.

coated plywood being cut with a saw to make a box

Begin by cutting the plywood. These are the measurements that we used:

Large box
  • 2 – 19 1/2 x 12″
  • 2 – 18 x 12″
  • 1 – 19 1/2 x 19 1/2″
 Small box
  • 2 – 15 x 12″
  • 2 – 13 1/2 x 12″
  • 1 – 13 1/2 x 13 1/2″

Assemble the boxes and secure the sides and base for each using screws.

We loved the coated plywood because we didn’t need to line the inside of the large box with anything, it came away from the set concrete perfectly. You will need to wrap cling wrap around the small box though because some of the exposed (non coated) edges of the plywood will be exposed.

a wood box wrapped in cling wrap

Place the small box (wrapped in cling wrap) inside the large box. Screw offcuts of plywood onto the corners to hold the small box in place. There are two reasons you do this; the first is to stop the small box from moving side to side, and the second is to stop the concrete from lifting the box too high.

Mix the concrete in a bucket with water and slowly pour it into each of the sides.

concrete being poured into a plywood box to make a planter

Once poured we turned heaters on periodically over a 24 hour period.

Gradually unscrew the center box first and remove it before removing the outside box.

Take a sander and smooth sand along the top of the planter to smooth it.

a concrete planter being sanded to make the top smooth

The concrete planter will sit on top of a wood base. Drill a hole in the center of the concrete planter. The wood base will raise the concrete planter to allow for drainage.

How to make a wood planter base

Cut four pieces of the pine board. The longest side will measure 18″ and the shortest side is cut on a 45 degree angle so that the pieces fit together like a picture frame. Screw the four sides together.

Using stain and a rag, stain the wood base and set aside to dry. You can make this while the concrete is drying.

The concrete planter will sit perfectly on top of the wood base and now you are ready to put a plant inside.

Weekend Reading 4.11.21 http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/centsationalgirl/cHAf/~3/qaUVZ05nGo4/ Thanks so much for all the love on the recent bathroom refresh, your comments on the blog and Insta were so kind! I took a two days off to rest after that whirlwind remodel and watched a few classic movies with my 17 year old daughter. She’s passionate about film and cinematography so we’re watching award winners like The Godfather and Gone with the Wind and everything in between so she can understand the history of film, and she’s introducing me to quirkier less known movies I’ve never seen. It’s so fun, we’re having the best conversations.

This week I’m pulling together the sources and materials for the bathrooms on my newest flip house project. The plumber is coming to move some pipes around he needs the valves and fixtures so I’m focused on details that need to happen before tile and other finishes. I’m also photographing a client’s kitchen that I helped renovate. The pandemic slowed the process but it’s finally done, I’ll share that soon.

Kintsugi helped me to understand my brother's death https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2021/apr/10/kintsugi-helped-me-to-understand-my-brothers-death The Japanese artform, based on a belief that a repaired pot can be stronger, taught me about tragedy and the ability to overcome it

My brother died at the age of 10, when I was eight. When I was nine, I shushed my best friend for mentioning him. At 11, I forced myself to stop turning my head away when we drove past a cemetery. And at 16 I spoke his name aloud for the first time, although it was many more years before I could actually talk about him.

“The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places,” wrote Ernest Hemingway. Decades after my brother died I found a way to understand this, and that way was through the metaphor of kintsugi (kin=gold + tsugi=joining), the Japanese repair technique that puts a broken pot back together but reveals the breaks and scars by highlighting the seams with pure gold. A shattered pot becomes a new entity, one that says out loud: I was broken, but now, even though I am not perfect, I am more beautiful and stronger than ever.

A Little Sunshine to Brighten Your Day ~ Free Printable Sunshine Gift Tags https://orgjunkie.com/2021/04/free-printable-sunshine-gift-tags.html Find free printable sunshine gift tags below!

Hi friends, I’m back! It was so nice to take some time off and get my basement finished. Oh what a job it was! I’ll post about it soon. It looks so different and I’m so happy with how it turned out. I know today’s post isn’t organizing related but I do hope you find it encouraging anyway. Since I spent so much time painting walls last week, I had a lot of time to think. And my heart is breaking for everyone struggling with current restrictions in place. We actually moved backwards here in Alberta, Canada from Phase Two back to Phase One because our case numbers are soaring again. So essentially we still can’t socialize indoors and there is a 15% capacity limit in stores. Restaurants are only allowed to serve takeout and on their patios (if they have one).

Thankfully, outdoor visits up to 10 people are okay. But other parts of Canada are not as fortunate and are on stay at home orders. And from what I have read, Canada is way behind many other countries in vaccination speed. So all that to say, I think that Canada is not doing well.

Where you live may not be doing well either. I’m so sorry. People are hanging on by threads, upset, discouraged and frustrated. And of course, due to each of us having very different circumstances, not everyone will agree on how things should be handled which causes more stress. There are no easy answers unfortunately and tensions are high right now. All I know for certain is one way or another we are all struggling with loss of some kind. And it hurts my heart. I want to give hugs so bad. And I really want to receive a hug so bad. I haven’t hugged anyone outside my family in over a year. It’s so hard.

Yet it is my faith as a Christian that gives me hope and helps me persevere. He is my rock in times of trouble (Psalm 18:2) and He promises to sustain us (Isaiah 46:4). He has sustained me through some very trying times and He will do the same for you as well if you just ask. I would be happy to pray for anyone that can use some extra prayers. Please reach out to me. Send me a direct message on Instagram or through email (under contact at the top of the page). Please know you are not alone.

In addition to prayer, I try to brighten up the day of others by delivering sweet little happy packages. I absolutely love making people smile! I’ve talked about my smile mission many times on here before and if you’d like to read a couple of those posts you can do so here:

Smile Sparks ~ A Movement to Ignite More Smiles Everywhere

Reindeer Runs & Making People Smile

This time I’m delivering a little sunshine to those needing some extra encouragement. Never underestimate the power of a bright happy gift that lets people know that they are loved and cared for. Look at how fun these yellow bundles of sunshine turned out.

The yellow products I added include:

  • A Pineapple Bubly beverage
  • Coffee Crisps
  • Juicy Fruit gum
  • A packet of seeds
  • A small bottle of yellow hand sanitizer
  • A container of Play-Doh
  • A smiley face ball (will also double as a stress ball!)

I purchased everything but the Bubly at the dollar store and each one comes to about $5.

They make me so happy. I hope they make others happy too. And I’m making my free printable sunshine gift tags available to you in case you’d like to do the same (get them with or without scripture). Because when we lift the spirits of those around us, we lift ours as well. And I think right now we can all use a little encouragement and sunshine. Am I right?

Lightweight Scarf https://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/lightweight-scarf
This scarf started as a way to use up some fabrics from my extensive stash. I design my own fabric, but still like to collect other people’s designs as well! I used three pieces of fabric. The patterned Japanese piece was a small fat quarter, I had a slightly larger amount of the grey and a bigger piece of the pink. When choosing your fabrics you just need to ensure that each one is at least 45cm wide and that the total length of all of them put together is 2 metres (plus seam allowances - I added 1.5cm to each edge). You'll also need a sewing machine, thread, pins, hand sewing needle and an iron. The scarf took me less than an hour to make so you can always run one up in the morning to wear out in the afternoon!

Master Bathroom Refresh http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/centsationalgirl/cHAf/~3/6ARj6rkLI9k/ *this post is brought to you in partnership with PaintCare.

It’s been a few years that I’ve wanted to give this bathroom a refresh but finally got around to completing phase one! I started with a design plan two weeks ago, ordered all the materials and fixtures, then installed them all last week. I decided to break up this remodel into three phases, first tackling the vanities, then the flooring and bathtub, and finally the walk in shower. It was too expensive and inconvenient to lose use of the bathroom, so I’ll be redoing the rest of this space later this year.

I’ve linked to all the sources below including the paint color I used on the cabinets. Take a look at the dramatic difference made in just a week!

Here’s a peek at what the right side sink vanities looked like before the changes. Swapping out the faucets, light fixtures, mirrors, and cabinet hardware made a huge difference!.

The old backsplash was replaced by a new vertical stack bond white tile from counter to ceiling which freshens the space. I also removed the decorative half legs on the vanity cabinet before priming and painting them deep green.

I went back and forth on replacing the vanity cabinets because they’re really good quality. I considered replacing the doors with a Shaker style, but then decided to simply paint them a beautiful shade of deep green and replace the old hardware. The home’s style is traditional so the raised routed panel design of the drawers and doors fits this home, and the new pulls help update the look.

Painting the walls and the cabinets required two kinds and colors of paint. The walls are painted with interior white and the cabinets with a waterborne alkyd paint, which is designed for trim and cabinets. Calculating how much paint you need can be challenging, thankfully there’s a comprehensive list of paint calculators by brand you can use to get the amount right. Thanks so much to PaintCare for creating a very helpful list!

I proudly partnered with PaintCare to bring this project to life! PaintCare is a non-profit that plans and operates industry-led paint recycling programs in states that pass paint stewardship laws. Their environmentally friendly program helps renovators, consumers, and businesses with paint management when their projects are final and complete.

Below is an image of what the left side looked like before I made all the changes. Those tall glass cabinets provided storage but they were so bulky and old fashioned and they blocked light to the mirror so I swapped them out for the floating shelves. I also have plans to add a modern wall cabinet like this one to the side wall to replace the storage I lost.

I chose a deep green and bright white palette because I wanted the bathroom to feel fresh and modern but also zen too! The tile, shelves, and plants give it a far lighter and more airy feel. I covered the blah tile (that I plan to replace) with a new washable rug.

The glossy white open shelves pair nicely with the glossy white tile. These shelves have sturdy brackets that were anchored with sheetrock screws to give them the greatest stability, then we cut the tile to go around the brackets.

I’ve always liked white tile in bathrooms, and you really can’t go wrong with any pattern of installation. I chose a simple vertical stack bond to elongate the space and I’ll repeat this pattern in the bathtub alcove. I followed the same steps I did a few years ago installing this backsplash using tile adhesive, 1/8” spacers, and grout.

I’ve written about the process for painting bathroom cabinets before so that you get the smoothest finish possible. The steps are the same! I use a deglosser to remove any dirt and grime, this product also acts as a sander too. Next, I spray paint the doors and drawer fronts with spray primer.

I brush prime the cabinet frames with a high quality brush, then add three super thin coats of paint to the surface. The thin coats are the key to ensuring a smooth coat on drawers and doors! Also these painting pyramids are essential, they prop up the doors so you can avoid drips along the sides of the cabinet doors.

Painting these bathroom cabinets and walls was a fun and fulfilling project, but cleaning up can be a chore. PaintCare makes it easy and convenient to recycle leftover paint! Visit PaintCare.org to find the nearest drop-off site to recycle your leftover paint from your home improvement projects.

Sources for this bathroom refresh :

rounded rectangle mirrors / brass towel ring / widespread faucet

drawer pulls / round vanity mirror / green planters / floating shelves

door knobs / gold picture frames / leaves art / 3×12” backsplash tile

gold trays / washable rug / brass vanity lights / cabinet paint color

Stay tuned for the next phase of this bathroom remodel (floors and bathtub alcove) coming later this summer. :)

Feather Print Skirt https://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/feather-print-skirt
A border repeat is a simple and attractive way to customize an item of clothing such as a plain, hemmed skirt. Border repeats are created by spacing your pattern evenly along the border of your print surface. You can use an acetate template guide as for the half-drop repeat if you would like. In this project, which is of a smaller scale than the half-drop repeat in the previous project, you can use an ironing board as a worksurface. This will enable your skirt to hang off the edge of the surface and be rotated easily as you print your feather border.
