The nurses went on strike to press the government-owned Queen Mamohato Memorial Hospital (QMMH) to give them the same salaries as their counterparts in other government and private institutions. Opened in 2011, QMMH is state-owned but run by the Tšepong Consortium, comprising five companies, namely Netcare Healthcare Group and Afri’nnai of South Africa, and Excel Health, Women Investment, and D10 Investments of Lesotho.

The University of Pennsylvania placed at the top of global higher education research company QS Quacquarelli Symonds' new list of the best universities for students who want to become nurses.

This is the 11th set of QS World University Rankings by Subject, which looks at universities across the world to compile a list of the best schools for various subjects, including law and medicine.

This year's rankings cover 51 academic subjects that fall into five categories: arts and humanities; engineering and technology; life sciences and medicine; natural sciences; and social sciences and management.

US schools were No. 1 in 30 of the 2021 global rankings, including for nursing. To create these rankings, QS looked at academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper, and h-index. QS describes the h-index as an index that is "based on the set of the academic's most cited papers and the number of citations that they have received in other publications."

QS used these metrics to calculate an overall score for a school in each of the subject rankings, but weights for the four metrics varied by subject. The full methodology can be found on QS' website.

The following are the top 17 US schools from the nursing program ranking, including where they placed on the overall list. All the various subject rankings and the full nursing table can be found on QS' website.

At the start of lockdown, I interviewed the virologist Dr Jane Greatorex. She was superb, with a gunslinging turn-of-phrase (“corona is the only pathogen in town”) and full of advice that rammed home, like no shambling government press conference ever could, the gravity of our situation. She washed deliveries before they came into the house, would talk to her neighbour only through a hedge and described the precautionary measures taken by her sister, who worked in Waitrose. Those were pretty intense – involving a lot of changes of clothes and black bin bags, plus a lifesize cutout of Jürgen Klopp.

I have thought about her sister a lot: what it is like when everyone else is avoiding their closest friends for safety, and you are seeing 50 strangers an hour. I have also thought about delivery drivers, knocking on doors with no idea who might be self-isolating behind them; bus drivers, getting sneezed on by squads of schoolchildren; teachers, carers, anyone anywhere near a hospital. Especially at the height of the crisis (when there were serious questions over whether it was safe to handle a petrol pump) while battalions of people were living in this cacophony of anxiety and caution, and having to block it out, every day, in order to go and do their jobs. The bravery of that is hard to wrestle into comprehension – though as thought experiments go, it is a lot less uncomfortable than trying to imagine what would have happened if everyone in these vital services had simply refused to perform them: if all these workers who, being often low-paid, and were previously held as low value, had called the world’s bluff.

Some people will be drawn to this profession from a young age, whereas others may commit to their mission later in life. 

If you are a parent and you want to become a nurse or enhance your qualifications, then you may have considered attending nursing school. Without the right preparation, all of these commitments can be extremely difficult to maintain. To help you survive nursing school as a Christian and a parent, here are 9 tips you should follow. 

Look After Yourself 

During your study, you will focus on how to look after patients. During life at home, you will focus on taking care of your family. In order to stay healthy enough to do so, you will need to take some of your own advice and look after yourself mentally, physically and spiritually. Nursing school should be treated like a marathon, not a sprint. Short periods of exhaustion are to be expected, but if you don’t look after yourself in the long-term, then your performance will plummet. 

Get Enough Exercise 

Another important part of looking after yourself is to get enough exercise. It can be easy for studying and family life to take up most of your day, but you should always make some time to get active. Exercise has been proven to reduce stress and improve your mental health. Exercise is also key to maintaining a good standard of physical health, which will make your organs healthier and your immune system stronger, making you fit to be a parent, practice your religion and study. 

Consider Home Study 

There are pros and cons of home study, but it is something you should strongly consider if you are a parent. An online course will give you plenty of time to take care of your family and practice your faith, while bettering your nursing qualifications. Studying with a reputable nursing school will open up a number of job opportunities for you and researching the institution is crucial. Utilizing every opportunity will benefit you during your study. You will meet a lot of unique people that will come from different backgrounds and have an interesting story. You should enjoy these people, especially if they are on your course and in a similar position to yourself. Even the people who are completely opposite to you will have their own outlook on life that may help you get through nursing school. Practice Time Management

Time management is one of the most important skills that you will need to develop in nursing school as a Christian parent. Learning how to prioritize and plan important daily tasks is crucial and will get you far during your time as a student nurse. Time management skills need to be practiced, as they will save you from a number of bad days as a nursing student and in the future. 

Keep a Journal

Keeping a journal will help to reduce sleepless nights where you can’t stop reviewing everything you need to do the following day. It will allow you to keep your life more organized and keep track of your day to day life. You will be able to monitor everything you have learned and use this to work out a routine that is perfect for you and your lifestyle. All it takes is a few minutes of writing before bed, jotting down your experiences, concerns and thoughts. This can really help reduce stress and anxiety.

Connect with Others 

Connecting with other Christian nursing students can be very uplifting and helpful. You will be able to create a support network, ask for advice and prayerfully care for each other. Social media makes it easier than ever to connect with people in a way that suits you. For example, you can join relevant Facebook groups and online forums. It’s also a great idea to unite in public to promote the Christian values associated with nursing and cooperatively look at ethical issues from a religious perspective.

Maybe you're preparing for your baby's arrival, or maybe your sweet little one is already here and you've realized just how important nursing bras are. It's easy to forget about yourself and what you'll need after your baby's arrival when you're preparing for that bundle of joy. 

There's good news — nursing bras are actually pretty user-friendly, and there are a lot of comfortable and cute options out there. All nursing bras are designed to give you easy and convenient access to nurse your baby. The most important part about using a nursing bra is finding the right style and fit that works for you.

If you're shopping while you're still pregnant, you'll likely want to go up at least one cup size from your current size. If your ribs have expanded a lot during pregnancy, you might need to go up a band size as well, at least for the first month or two. 

As your milk regulates and your body continues to change postpartum, your size will likely change. You might even notice that your size changes throughout the day as your breasts fill with milk and then get emptied by your baby. A lot of nursing bras, especially the ones designed for sleep and comfort, stretch and adjust so you won't need to keep buying a new bra. The traditional drop cup nursing bra is my favorite type because I find them the most comfortable and the most supportive. They fit a lot like a regular bra and may or may not have a clasp in the back. When you're ready to nurse your baby, simply unhook the clasp at the top of the cup on the side you want to nurse.  

To unhook the clasp (right side):

  1. Place your right thumb under the clasp.
  2. Optional: Grab the right bra strap right above the clasp with your left hand. Depending on how easily your clasp unhooks, you may not need both hands.
  3. Lift the clasp up from underneath with your right thumb. 
  4. Pull the clasp up and away from your body.
  5. Pull the cup down.
  6. When you're done nursing, simply re-fasten the clasp.

While the cup is dropped to nurse, you will notice a piece of fabric that extends to the bottom of the cup so the strap stays in place. This type of nursing bra keeps your other breast covered and supported while only nursing one side.

Note that many traditional nursing bras do not have underwire, as there is a belief that underwire can cause clogged ducts and mastitis. While this hasn't been proven, you might find that underwire bras aren't very comfortable when you're nursing, especially when your milk is still coming in and regulating.

How to use a front- or middle-clasp nursing bra paramour nursing bra You may benefit from a front- or middle-clasp nursing bra for a variety of reasons.

No clasp or sleep nursing bras are typically made of soft fabric and offer just enough support to keep your breasts in place through the night or while you're just lounging around the house. They're very helpful in the early days of nursing when you're more prone to leakage — they can help keep nursing pads in place.  

To use, simply pull the fabric to the side of the breast you are going to nurse on.

These might be the most confusing, but are the most convenient, especially if you need to pump. These bras allow you to have your hands free to take care of your kids, work, or do anything else a busy mom needs to get done, all while pumping that liquid gold. You can even use pumping bras to pump and nurse at the same time. 

Each pumping bra operates a little differently, but in general, here are the steps for using a pumping bra: 
  1. Slide or unzip fabric to gain access to your breast.
  2. Put a breast shield in place.
  3. Reposition the fabric to keep the shield in place.
  4. Attach the pump to the shield.
  5. Pump hands-free!

  • A nursing tank: These have the same snap closure as a traditional nursing bra, so just undo both snaps to feed your baby. Many nursing tanks have built-in support and/or pads, but I never found them to be supportive enough on their own.   • Don't forget nursing pads: In the first few weeks as your milk regulates, it will likely leak. (TMI, I know, but if you haven't been there before, you'll be glad I warned you). Of course, don't let me dictate what you can wear! Nobody will be able to tell it's a nursing bra you have on under your clothes, so wear whatever makes you feel comfortable. These options can just make your life a little easier, especially with a newborn.

Incredible Health updates its healthcare career platform to help nurse hiring cope with COVID http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Techcrunch/~3/5Mrgy2-kLnY/ The healthcare industry, even prior to the current pandemic, has never looked much like other industries when it comes to hiring and career management. That was the impetus behind Incredible Health, a startup founded by medical doctor Iman Abuzeid and Amazon alum Rome Portlock. The platform Incredible Health built is all about connecting nurses with jobs – but it goes above and beyond your typical online job board in order to provide better service both to job seekers and hospitals, and to help nurses throughout the course of their careers.

I spoke to Abuzeid, who serves as Incredible Health’s CEO, about some new features that Incredible Health has just introduced, in part to address the particular needs of nurses and hospitals considering the constraints of COVID-19 and the ongoing challenges it presents. She first explained why Incredible is a unique platform to begin with, among a sea of relatively undifferentiated job search products.

“There are three unique things about the platform,” she said. “The first is that the employers apply to the nurses instead of the other way around – which we can do because of this huge supply-demand imbalance. The second is that we’ve automated the screening and pre-vetting of the nurses, so we’re able to automatically verify things like licenses and certifications, and experiences and so on, because we’ve integrated with so many databases. And the third thing we do is custom matching algorithms.”

That means Incredible Health provides hospitals with only matches that meet their exact needs for a specific position requirement, rather than forcing them to wade through large numbers of potential applicants who might not have the skills they need. In a field like nursing, which has a lot of specific professional designations and certifications, specificity actually helps both sides quite a bit.

“The end result of all of that is hires that happen at least three or four times faster,” Abuzeid told me. “Our average right now is 13 days, and the efficiency is about 30 times more efficient than a standard job board. Really, some of the biggest impacts we have are financial – we save on average, each hospital we work with, about $2 million per year. We do that by reducing their travel nurse budget, because they don’t have to use as many contract workers when they’re permanently staffed. And we also reduce their overtime costs, and their HR costs.”

Abuzeid also told me that nurses hired through Incredible Health tend to stick around longer. The startup only has about a year of historical data to check against so far, but she said that so far, they’re seeing about 25% percent higher retention vs. the industry average. She added that they suspect this is due largely to the fact that nurses are able to consider multiple offers and hospital options on the platform, since there are often multiple employers vying to hire the same employee, especially in the case of specialization like ICU nurses.

As for what’s new to Incredible Health, the company has introduced automated interview scheduling. Abuzeid says that has led to 70% of interviews being scheduled via automation within 36 hours on the platform currently. The platform has also introduced remote interviewing for safely distanced pre-hiring interactions, and in-app chat between potential employers and nurses right in the iOS, Android and web apps that Incredible Health offers. Profiles for nurses on the platform also now list socialites and skills, from a pre-set catalog of 45 specialities and 250 skills that are specific to the nursing field, like ICU or OR expertise. Abuzeid said that most of these were fast-tracked due to significant changes they were seeing in the hiring process as a result of the COVID pandemic.

“We saw several impacts,” she told me. “First is like the number of offers that started to go out – we see one go out every few hours now. And the number of interview requests is up to one being sent every few minutes. So it’s really accelerated, and that’s been a combination of two things. One is just that we made the software better and more efficient – but the other thing is the urgency also increased on the hospital end given the pandemic.”

Aside from improving the process of hiring vs. traditional methods, and supporting more remote hiring and onboarding workflows, Incredible Health also addresses some of the diversity gaps in the current healthcare industry hiring process. Abuzeid explained that that’s due in part to built-in features of the platform like salary estimate calculators, and adds that some tweaks have been created intentionally to level the playing field.

“30% of nurses identity in the U.S. identify as minorities, so we take diversity pretty seriously because that’s a huge chunk of our user base,” she said. “By giving nurses salary data, it democratizes that and makes you more informed. We also provide talent advocates who are also nurses on our team that support every single nurse, helping them almost as career coach to support them throughout the hiring process.”

Incredible Health also takes steps to ensure the product isn’t itself reinforcing any existing biases that may be present, consciously or otherwise, on the part of hiring parties.

“We random sort the list of the list of nurses as they’re displayed in front of employers and the application, or we use avatars instead of profile pictures,”  We’re also constantly monitoring the data that that that’s in the platform. So for example, we noticed that recruiters were biasing against nurses that lived further away. And so we just removed the current location of the nurse, we just stopped displaying that, and that bias went away. So it’s really important that the software and our algorithms actually counter human bias.”

So far, Incredible Health has raised $17 million in funding, including a Series A last year led by Jeff Jordan at Andreessen Horowitz. The company is already in use at over 200 hospitals across the U.S., as well as at a number of the largest health care networks in the country, like HCA and Baylor, and at academics medical centres including Cedar Sinai and Stanford as well. The startup is growing quickly by addressing a long-standing need with software designed specifically to the challenge, and looks poised for even more future growth as the demand for qualified, well-supported healthcare professionals grows.

Over the last several months, we’ve seen dramatic swings in the demand for healthcare across the country. While hospitals in some cities were overwhelmed by an influx of COVID-19 patients, others sat empty — and in many cases experienced financial distress — as patients postponed elective surgeries and care for non-life-threatening matters. Cities went from relative safe zones to dangerous hotspots and back again within a matter of a few months.

This “COVID-19 whipsaw” has brought into focus a problem that has long been simmering in healthcare: The movement of labor is highly inefficient. We need a new paradigm in healthcare labor markets.

The pandemic has exposed systemic vulnerabilities

Early in the pandemic, many clinicians moved across state lines to answer Governor Andrew Cuomo’s calls for help in New York, only to be told upon arrival that their contracts had been canceled because the hospitals had overestimated their need. The imbalance of nurse and physician labor across states, which existed well before the pandemic, reached a terrifying apex during the height of the pandemic. In some parts of the country, clinicians were being furloughed or laid off, while in others they were stretched to their full capacity working around the clock to save lives. With each month came new hotspots — New York, Detroit, Miami, Phoenix, Los Angeles — and with each new hotspot a near disaster caused by a shortage of healthcare workers.

The marathon of addressing COVID-19 has imposed severe stress, depression and anxiety on our nation as a whole, with our healthcare providers at the epicenter. Clinician burnout was a serious issue even before COVID-19, but it has only gotten worse in recent months, especially for those working in geographic hotspots.

Healthcare workers across the country have found themselves delivering care for a high volume of acutely ill patients, often with severely limited supplies of personal protective equipment (PPE), magnifying their own risk. Many have watched colleagues fall sick and even die, while others have been asked to ration patient care. Multiple studies have highlighted increased instances of depression, anxiety, insomnia and psychological distress amongst frontline workers, and some clinicians have even taken their own lives.

Challenges with the legacy staffing model

Prior to the pandemic, our healthcare system had long dealt with seasonal and geographic differences in healthcare demand. Flu season, for example, causes more demand for healthcare in December than July. Florida experiences more demand for care in February than June because snowbirds migrate from the northeast in the winter and bring their healthcare needs with them.

In the past, temporary or contingent workers — travel nurses, per diem nurses and locum tenens doctors — helped to balance supply of labor with the seasonal and geographic peaks and troughs in demand. Staffing agencies worked with these temporary clinicians to match them with opportunities at hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, long-term care facilities and other providers. Many people don’t realize that temporary clinicians are an important part of the healthcare workforce. Estimates are that supplemental staffing accounts for more than 30% of total nursing hours in the U.S.

Staffing agencies, however, cannot scale for pandemic scale events because they are using outdated tools and processes. Recruiters at staffing agencies make phone calls and send emails to communicate with the clinicians who are frequently annoyed by inconvenient and unwanted solicitations. More importantly, these tools are not fast enough when we experience sudden unpredicted spikes in different geographic areas like those in the past six months.

Outdated regulations are partly to blame. Licensure for nurses is handled state-by-state, which creates obstacles that prohibit nurses from working in states where they are not licensed. There are approximately 35 states that are part of a licensing compact that offers mutual recognition, but many of the largest states and those hit hardest by the early days of the pandemic — like California, New York and Washington — are not part of the compact. In California, it takes six weeks on average to get a license for an out-of-state nurse, a number that has not budged even as the state’s COVID-19 cases have skyrocketed.

Some states that are not part of the compact have used executive actions or emergency declarations to allow nurses to cross state lines, but many of those are now expiring and were never meant to be a long-term solution. The pandemic has highlighted the need for new regulations as part of the solution described below that allow for a more fluid movement of clinicians across state lines. Are patients and diseases in California really that different from the patients and diseases in Texas such that we need different regulatory standards and license requirements in each state?

The solution: A vertical marketplace for healthcare workers

We need to move beyond the antiquated staffing agency model to facilitate a more rapid response, a better clinician experience and more efficient matching. The good news is that we are starting to see companies addressing this problem with a software-centric model: the vertical labor marketplace. Some examples of these marketplaces include Trusted Health and Nomad Health.

Like StubHub, the company I started 20 years ago, these marketplaces use the power of the internet to connect supply with demand. In the case of these healthcare labor marketplaces, the clinicians make up the supply while the hospitals and other care facilities make up the demand. Rather than scouring the job boards for individual hospitals or fielding calls from recruiters, clinicians can see all available positions that meet their skills and experience, along with compensation and other job details. They can check the marketplace when it is convenient without getting inundated by phone calls or emails.

Clinicians can use the marketplaces to come in and out of the labor pool as they wish. This helps to reduce stress and increase work-life balance before burnout sets in. Some nurses might choose to leverage the marketplace to move to Florida in the winter to serve the snowbirds while others may choose to take the summer off and work during flu season. The marketplace also creates financial opportunities for underutilized clinicians by better allocating their labor to geographies and hospitals that need them. Hospitals and other providers benefit from these simple-to-use cloud-based marketplaces that allow them to quickly ramp up capacity when they need it most.

The system needs more contingent workers

In the staffing agency paradigm, when an independent hospital experiences a spike in demand it must work with a staffing agency to bring in temporary clinicians quickly. A multihospital health system has the advantage of being able to move clinicians from lower demand hospitals to a sister-hospital that is experiencing an unexpected peak. A widely adopted national marketplace would theoretically have an even greater advantage because its broader visibility across more hospitals would allow it to move resources from hospitals with excess capacity to those with the highest demand, even if the two hospitals are unaffiliated.

There have been heroic doctors and nurses who have volunteered to move to areas with the highest demand. However, hospitals and health systems are not incentivized to lend out their doctors and nurses to nonaffiliated hospitals. Therefore, the solution requires more clinicians to be in the contingent workforce (like travel and per diem nurses). If the mix between contingent nurses and permanent nurses were 70/30 instead of 30/70, peaks and troughs would be more easily handled since a larger percentage of the resources would be shared across a larger network of hospitals. The marketplaces would have an even greater impact on our society because they would be able to allocate even more resources to the hospitals with the most acute needs.

There are two possible sources of additional contingent workers. First, permanent healthcare workers may decide to terminate their affiliation with a single hospital or health system in favor of contingent work because they are attracted to the flexibility. Second, workers in other industries may choose to enter the healthcare industry because it provides more options for contingent work. Regardless of the path, an expansion of the supply of contingent healthcare workers is a necessary part of the solution.

A side benefit: Stronger financial health for our hospitals

During the pandemic, patients across the country chose to postpone many elective surgeries and non-life-threatening procedures because they were scared of contracting the virus at the hospital. As a result, hospitals lost revenue from profitable elective procedures. Because hospitals have huge fixed costs (salaries are a big component), the government has provided tens of billions of stimulus money for hospitals in financial distress.

In addition to all the other benefits described above, a more widely adopted vertical labor marketplace for healthcare workers would provide relief to hospitals by shifting a larger portion of clinician labor from a fixed cost to a variable cost. Hospitals would have a smaller number of permanent employees and a larger number of temporary contingent workers. When demand drops, hospitals would use fewer contingent clinicians. When demand rises, they could tap into the marketplace to bring on more capacity.

A marketplace approach to America’s healthcare and its clinicians is long overdue. While the pandemic magnified our current system’s vulnerabilities, they have been there all along. By leveraging the technology and marketplace paradigm that has made so many other industries efficient, we can improve not only our healthcare system and clinician quality of life, but also our hospitals’ bottom line. Let’s galvanize the collective distress COVID-19 has created and use it to pioneer a more efficient model for all.

Poor sleeping schedules, bad days at work, and long hours staring at one page and not understanding a thing on it are all seen as “common”, especially when you are tackling a complicated career like nursing with an equally challenging nursing degree.

It doesn’t have to be. 

Staying calm and measured will help you succeed in both your job and in your study, and to achieve such a state of mind, you must improve your outlook, your health, and work to promote your mental health. 

Believe Your Degree is Worthwhile 

Before you begin changing your habits and getting into the thick of your degree, make sure it is worth it. Not only that but make sure you believe that it is worth it. Studying while working full-time is hard, and if you aren’t completely committed, you aren’t going to put in the effort you need to get the most out of your degree. 

It can also feel demoralizing if it isn’t the last degree you want to go for. To avoid this demoralizing state research. Find that perfect degree that will help you achieve all of your goals, not just the most effective, but in the least amount of time.

Take nursing, for example. It’s one of the few careers that don’t just recommend higher education, but actually demand it for higher-level (and higher paid) positions. If you want to move beyond an RN, then you have no choice but to go for your MSN or DNP. 

DNP is the highest level of nursing available and can actually be achieved directly after your BSN. With a tremendous online DNP like this, you don’t need to complete your MSN first, and then complete your DNP. Caring for Your Physical Health

First things first, you must care for your physical health. Though the mind is far more complicated than simply caring for your physical needs, an unhealthy body does exacerbate many issues that may or may not be holding you back. As a nurse, you know this, but like every profession, it still seems to get pushed back. 

To help you improve your physical health, so that you can stay alert throughout your workday and again during your coursework and individual study, use these tips: 

Diet 

Eating well is an obvious one. The body requires fuel, and not just any fuel, but a specific set of vitamins and nutrients to function at optimal levels. This even carries on to the brain, which requires a substantial amount of energy throughout the day. 

Remove Temptation 

When you want to improve your diet, you are going to find it rather challenging to keep on track when you have cookies and chips and chocolate right there in your home beckoning you to them in the middle of the night or when you are in the middle of a busy shift at the hospital. In fact, consider the hospital vending machine to be your worst enemy. Sugar offers a high energy return and a quick crash. You need a more sustainable energy solution. 

It’s pretty easy to say no when you are full, but when you reach that “snacky” stage of the day, eating healthy is thrown out the window in favor of eating easily. Remove these easy and unhealthy temptations and replace them with healthy alternatives so you can at least get the vitamins and nutrients that your body needs. 

Make Sauces and Soups from Scratch 

Many sauces, soups, and other similar toppings contain sugar and a lot of it. If you want an easy way to enjoy delicious meals and be healthier at the same time, try to make as much of these foods at home as possible. 


Sauces and soups are easy to make with some roasted vegetables and a blender and can be stored in the freezer until you need them for months. Not only will you be eating better, but you will also be saving money in the process. 

Prep Food in Advance 

To make it easy to enjoy healthy lunches and even dinners regularly, prep food in advance. The sauce is an excellent example of food prepping, but the concept doesn’t end there. 

Sleep 

A thousand cups of coffee won’t wake your mind when you’ve had a night of inadequate sleep, it will only send your heart into hyperdrive. There is a reason why sometimes it doesn’t matter how much caffeine or stimulants you take; you don’t feel alert. As a nurse, this could put someone’s life in danger. You need deeper, better sleeps on a consistent schedule to be better at your work and still have the brainpower to study nursing afterward.

Importance of Sleep 

While you can trudge through a day through sheer force of will, lack of sleep does catch up to you. Namely, when we don’t sleep well, our brain has a harder time forming and maintaining the pathways that help us learn and create new memories. This makes it harder for us to concentrate, harder to learn, and even dilutes our response time. 

In short, a bad night’s sleep could very well mean any studying you do in the day will be wasted because you will either be staring at the same page for over an hour trying to actually process what you are reading, or you’ll just forget it. 

How to Get a Better Night’s Sleep 

To get a better night’s sleep, you need to first understand what makes us go to sleep, our circadian rhythm, and sleep-wake homeostasis. 


The circadian rhythm is our body’s internal clock. It uses a variety of environmental factors and regular patterns to decide when you should wake up, and when you should sleep. One of the ways it does this is through blue-white light. Before the modern era, the only blue-white light we saw was daylight. Our bodies were attuned to this daylight, so we woke with the dawn and became drowsier after sunset. 


Now we have phones and televisions and phone screens. Unless you have the night mode on, these screens emit a blue-white light that can disrupt our internal sleep schedules and make it harder to sleep when we want to sleep. 

Avoiding electronic screens after sunset can help with this problem immensely. 

The second factor to consider, the homeostatic sleep drive, keeps track of when we need to sleep. The drive is felt more deeply the longer you are awake, and it is why you sleep longer and more intensely after being sleep deprived. Light, genetics, and hormones all affect this sleep-wake cycle.

  1. Regular Sleep Schedule 

A great way to start getting not just a better night’s sleep, but a more consistent level of sleep, is to schedule it. Even on weekends, try to go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning. 

Our body’s internal clocks will adjust to this new schedule to the point where you’ll start to feel tired around bedtime and wake up naturally without an alarm clock. Not only will you find you can go to sleep faster and wake up fresher, but your entire sleep cycle will also adjust as well. Overall, you will enjoy a deeper, more enjoyable sleep. 

  1. Light Therapy 

As mentioned, the blue-white light is tied to our waking hours. Ensure there is no blue-white light in your home after sunset by changing the settings or even just changing your routines so that you enjoy a screen-free evening before bed. 

  1. Wind-Down Routine Ideas 

If you do specific actions every time before bed, the actions will actually have a hypnotic effect on the brain. Treat yourself to a comprehensive beauty routine again and again before sleep, and you’ll find yourself become drowsy by the time you are finished. 

  1. Improve Your Bedroom 

If the reason you are not sleeping well is due to physical discomfort, however, then the only thing to do is to invest in a better bedroom. A new mattress and pillow set will do wonders when it comes to waking up feeling refreshed. Your spine, in particular, should be supported during your sleep so that you don’t wake up with pinched nerves or aching pains. 

  1. Exercise 

The most important thing is that you stay active. If you enjoy going to the gym, high. If you don’t, then don’t worry about it. You can go for walks, runs, bike rides, dance around your room, do handstands or anything else instead. The only thing you need to try to do is to be active at least 30 minutes a day and to ideally get your heart rate up for a consistent 15 minutes a day. 

If you have a job on your feet, like in our nursing example, then you probably won’t even need to worry about getting your exercise in, because you fill your daily quota several times over during your shifts. 

Caring for Your Mental Health and Wellbeing 

Your physical health will help you feel good and can help give you the energy you need to finish your work and then continue to study nursing without feeling stung out or stressed. Your mental health and wellbeing, however, will make it 

Have a Place Where You Study 

If you have a home office, study nursing there. If you don’t, either set up space in your home or find a place to work outside. This could be a co-working hot desk you rent out, or it could be a cafe or even the library. 

By keeping where you study nursing consistently, you can get in the zone much faster. 

Plan Breaks 

We cannot work non-stop. To avoid burnout, you should aim to take a break every hour or so and have fun on that break. It’s essential if you want to work for two or more hours and pushing through will only serve to handicap your efforts. 

Work with Other Students to Lighten the Workload 

You will have other students in the same boat as you, so work with them. You can each aim to make study notes based on a chapter of your textbook and then share it with one another so that you can read and learn on your own time, but don’t have to go through the extra effort of writing up notes for it. 

Use Your University’s Resources 

Your university will have library access, student advisors, mental health advocates, and so much more. Know what they offer and make use of its resources to succeed. 

Seek Out Professional Help If and When Necessary 

Staying stress-free is one thing. Tackling a mental illness on your own is another. If all the healthy eating, living, and study tips do absolutely nothing, then it is time to seek out professional help. You don’t have to wait until it feels like there’s no way out to get help. If you feel like your mind is rebelling against you and you’ve eliminated all normal causes, then the issue could be in your brain. 

Mental illness is caused by a variety of factors, from genetic, to hormonal, to even situational. Seeking out professional help and getting diagnosed is the most critical first step, as it can help you understand what is happening to you and give you better tools to cope. 

Remember: Routine is Where You Will Find Success 

Once you have your routine behind you, backing you every day, you can start taking on the dual challenge of work and study nursing. Use all the tips and tricks to stay calm and stress-free, and you can continue to succeed in your career and pass all your requirements of your degree with flying colors. 

The best part is that these new habits will help you in all of your future goals, so start today and take your potential in your hands.
