For Artisans Behind Stop-Motion Features, It’s a Small World After All

The earworm song “It’s a Small World” may be a Disneyland staple, but stop motion moviemaking gives other meanings to the phrase. That’s not just a description of the doll-sized cavemen that stomp through “Early Man” by Aardman Animation’s Nick Park, or the miniature canines populating Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs” — when you look […]

‘Wallace and Gromit’ Animation Studio Now Belongs to Its Employees

In 2018, huge media corporations are like those rolling cities in Mortal Engines: they’re always on the hunt for a smaller company to consume. But Aardman Animations, the stop-motion animation company responsible for projects like Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run, isn’t interested in being eaten up by a behemoth like Disney, Comcast, or WarnerMedia. In a preemptive move to make sure they don’t become the next 20th Century Fox, the founders of the company have given a 75% stake in Aardman to t...

Aardman Animation is Working on ‘Chicken Run 2’

It’s been 18 years since Aardman Animation delivered the stop-motion prison escape comedy Chicken Run. The film from 2000 focused on a group of chickens who hatch a plan to bust out of their coop when they learn what deadly plans an evil farm owner has for them. To this day, Chicken Run is still the highest grossing stop-motion animated movie of all time, and now is apparently the time to make a sequel happen. Chicken Run 2 is in the works at Aardman Animation, who is developing the film with S...

New ‘Early Man’ Trailer: Eddie Redmayne’s Caveman Rocks the Bronze Age

In an era where we’re inundated with mostly identical CG animation, it’s always a breath of fresh air when Nick Park arrives back on the scene. The creator of Wallace & Gromit and Chicken Run, Park’s distinct stop-motion style of animation is always something we welcome with open arms. This is the third trailer we’ve seen for Early Man, but it’s a treat for the eyes once more. Not just in the painstaking detail given to each character and piece of animation, but for the new gags that are scatte...

‘Early Man’ Trailer: The Director of ‘Chicken Run’ Takes Us Back in Time

The folks at the British animation studio Aardman are responsible for beloved movies like Chicken Run, Shaun the Sheep, and Wallace and Gromit, and while CG has largely won out as the dominant form of animation for most major movies, Aardman’s sticking with claymation for a decidedly old school look. That’s especially appropriate for their new film Early Man, which is about as old school as you can get: it’s the story of cavemen butting heads with new technology. Check out a brand new Early Man...
