Grammys CEO Addresses Marilyn Manson, Louis CK Nominations: “We Won’t Look Back At People’s History”

Yesterday, the Recording Academy unveiled the nominations for next year’s Grammys. They were weird, in the way that Grammy nominations are always weird. ABBA and Sun Ra Arkestra were nominated for the first time ever. Taylor Swift and Kanye West are up against each other for Album Of The Year. Late Show bandleader Jon Batiste somehow led the field with 11 nominations. But people noted two nominees in particular: Marilyn Manson and Louis CK.

Grammy Nominations 2022: Surprises, Snubs, & More Takeaways

The Recording Academy continues to exist within its own strange dimension, one in which Jon Batiste is the center of the musical universe and the second Lady Gaga/Tony Bennett jazz duets album was one of the landmark popular music events of 2021. You have to hand it to them for the consistency, at least: So many extremely Grammys-esque artists were showered with nominations today in preparation for the Jan. 31 ceremony at, uh, Crypto.com Arena. Some of them, like Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber a...

Are the 2020s really like living back in the 1970s? I wish …

With queues for petrol, inflation and Abba on the radio, it’s easy to compare the two decades. But you wouldn’t if you were there, says Polly Toynbee, as she revisits the styles of her youthQueueing for petrol, I turn on the radio and there are Abba, singing their latest hit. Shortages on shop shelves are headline news, with warnings of a panic-buying Christmas. And national debt is sky high. But this isn’t the 1970s; it’s 2021. People who weren’t born then have been calling this a return to tha...

Summer Walker, ABBA Debut in Top Two Spots on Album Chart

Summer Walker has landed atop the Billboard 200 album chart for the first time, but the most remarkable honor for the week may belong to the group landing in the No. 2 spot. Remarkably, ABBA’s second-place finish marks the first time the group has ever had a top 10 album in the U.S., and it […]

With Silk Sonic, Bruno Mars & Anderson .Paak Set Their Time Machine To ’70s Funk & Soul

Bruno Mars is a pastiche artist. That’s just who he is. He is very good at it, too — a born entertainer, a gifted songwriter, a master of period detail rivaling any Hollywood professional. Over the past decade, Mars has carved out a space as mainstream pop’s official retro ambassador. You are not ever going to find him pushing music forward, but he can be counted on to show up every couple years with expert facsimiles of bygone genres, overtly fun and catchy music bound to get wedding dance floo...

Abba: Voyage review – full-on and frothy

(Polydor)The return of the Swedish super troupers has plenty of bittersweet erudition, plus a good dollop of mass-market cheeseNearly 40 years after their break-up, Abba’s reunion album upholds the contradictory legacy of the very first Swedish pop powerhouse. Half of this record finds hatchet-burying divorcés Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus returning as titans of emotionally literate pop. There are songs here with a cinematographic grasp of gesture all...

ABBA Return, More ABBA-Esque Than Ever, With ‘Voyage’: Album Review

Anticipating a long-awaited yet unexpected reunion is one of life’s more conflicted experiences. Will your old friend look good or awful? Will they be stuck in the past, or a 2.0 or 3.0 version of the person you remember? Most of all, will they still be themselves? It’s both corny and perfectly fitting to frame […]

ABBA’s Bjorn Ulvaeus Talks CISAC Report and the ‘Immoral’ Treatment of Songwriters by the Music Industry

In an understated, very Swedish way, ABBA co-founder and CISAC president Bjorn Ulvaeus is apoplectic. We’re talking about the soaring value of song catalogs — a boom that has seen Bob Dylan sell his catalog for nearly $400 million, and Hipgnosis Songs spending more than $2 billion on acquisitions in just over three years, with […]
