Aetna’s Mindfulness Initiative Leads to Unique Employee Engagement

In today’s job market, what constitutes an engaging employee experience is constantly redefined. There was a time where a fun lounge area with games and snacks was viewed as a key factor in retaining employees. But look at Google. For all its hip attempts to create a fun work environment, it has one of the lowest median employee tenures at little over a year, according to PayScale.  “If employees aren’t engaged and satisfied at work, they’ll move on to the next best opportunity to advan...

Dispensed: Troubles at uBiome, pharma giant Merck's plan to upend the $20 billion HIV market, and why insurers are starting to embrace brands like SmileDirectClub

Hello, It's been another busy week of reporting for the healthcare team as we look into what's unfolding in the worlds of biotech, pharma, and healthcare. I spent some time at Rock Health's Enterprise Insights Series event in NYC, where I moderated a conversation about the convergence of health-tech and pharma. It was interesting to hear from the folks at Flatiron Health, Pear Therapeutics, and Sanofi about what makes a good partner for a startup, and why working with pharma is almost unavoidab...

Hospitals are getting more competitive to win patients. Here's how one of NYC's largest health systems is building new tech to stay relevant.

New York's Mount Sinai Health System is making a bet that a revamped home page and a chat feature to answer questions and book appointments will help it appeal to patients in the competitive New York market.  The effort is led by Mount Sinai's Chief Product Officer David Kerwar, who drew inspiration from applications like Lyft as a way to provide estimates for booking different types of visits: from virtual video conversations, to urgent care, to a trip to the emergency room. The move to make ...

Silicon Valley startup uBiome raised $105 million on the promise of exploring a 'forgotten organ.' After an FBI raid, ex-employees say it cut corners in its quest for growth.

In April, the FBI raided the offices of microbiome testing startup uBiome, reportedly as part of an investigation into questionable billing practices. On the heels of the raid, uBiome placed co-CEOs Jessica Richman and Zac Apte on administrative leave. Interviews with insiders reveal concerns at the company that extend beyond billing issues, however. They claim a quest for growth drove the company to cut other corners as well, including on its science. Visit Business Insider's home page for mo...

Why insurers are beginning to embrace billion-dollar healthcare startups like SmileDirectClub and Warby Parker

Massive insurers like Aetna and UnitedHealthcare are embracing direct-to-consumer brands like Warby Parker and SmileDirectClub by agreeing to pay for their products. It's happening at a time when insurers are trying to get competitive and reach members through products they find as convenient as shopping online.  It's also a show of confidence in the approaches these companies are taking, which are sometimes opposed by other clinicians. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. In t...

The complaints detail instances of surprise bills as high as $3,000 and of bills sent to insurers for tests that weren't delivered. IBM’s Hyperledger isn’t a real blockchain — here’s why

Back in 2016, enterprise “private blockchain” was a new, unfamiliar idea. There were not many major players in the private permissioned blockchain space; a big name was IBM, whose contributions to Hyperledger Fabric has since brought its tech in front of the likes of Walmart, Nestlé, and Aetna. You would think that the prominence and history of IBM’s brand would result in wide industry adoption of their blockchain tech, but instead, adoption has been sluggish and most solutions are still in the ...
