deton8 is a little drum machine with loads of soul

Twisted Electrons move on from acid and chip synths to drum machines. And the deton8, for around three hundred bucks, packs a ton of personality and sound possibility in a cute, playable package. Twisted Electrons made a name for themselves in fun little boxes and boards packed with 8-bit, chip music, and acid sounds. Those instruments all stand out for lots of sequencing features and hands-on playable options. So a drum machine is of course a natural next step. But what a next step the deton...

Comment on spaghetti pangrattato with crispy eggs by Alex

We love this dish when there isn’t much in the fridge, because it requires mostly basics that I always have on hand. With a simple kale salad this is one of my favorite low-key meals.

Comment on cozy cabbage and farro soup by Alex

Made a variation of this soup with barley instead of farro, which I didnt have on hand, and it was excellent. The acid and the parmesan really add tons of dimension and flavor to the dish.

Comment on crispy rice and egg bowl with ginger-scallion vinaigrette by Alex

Made a version of this that was incredible. Instead of cucumber, we used lightly sauteed green cabbage. We pickled the carrot and added thinly sliced jalapeno and garlic, as well as black sesame seeds and avocado. The result was delectable.

Spring Forward : Notes from Right Now

My excellent friend Knox, a guy not known for his restraint, ordered way to many bulbs for his garden and gave the excess to me. I planted about half of them before our ridiculous second snow arrived. Yesterday, when I went to take the dog out, I noticed my lawn was dotted with bright yellow crocuses, like little golden suns. There should be more of them, but the squirrels must have their share. Daily, I would tuck them back in the ground, daily, I would find them slightly chewed on and rejecte...

The academic at the heart of the Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal is suing Facebook for defamation

Aleksandr Kogan, who created an app that enabled Cambridge Analytica to collect personal details of millions of Facebook users, sued Facebook for defamation on Friday, The New York Times reported.  Kogan alleged that Facebook defamed him when it said he lied about how the data collected by the app would be used. He previously said that Facebook and Cambridge Analytica used him as a "scapegoat." The academic who created an app allowing Cambridge Analytica to collect personal detail...

"Of course, I don’t believe that Alex and Wendy exist. But as a cultural journalist, as a book critic, I’ve been put on notice that I work for them."

Writes Christian Lorentzen, who — email from Harpers tells me — was "New York magazine’s lead book critic until last fall, when the magazine told him that his contract would not be renewed, because what he did had 'little value.'" Lorentzen's essay — "Like This or Die/The fate of the book review in the age of the algorithm" — begins with this amusement envisioning of the nonexistent Alex and Wendy:Alex and Wendy love culture. It’s how they spend their free time. It’s what they talk about at dinn...

The Most Unconventional Berlin Bucket List

illustrations: Berk Karaoglu.  We decided to rethink the concept of a conventional bucket list and came up with scenarios that shamelessly embrace Berlin’s potential as the backdrop of some memorable experiences. And ‘’memorable’’ is actually somewhat of an understatement here – some of these shenanigans are simply unforgettable, even if some parties involved may indeed wish otherwise. While we are by no means condoning every single one of these actions, let alone encourage anyone to draw any...

I Have $90K In Student Loan Debt & I’m Struggling To Pay It All Back

This week's episode of Money Diaries: The Podcast is a really tough one. Our caller is not spending $300 a month on wine or lamenting the fact that her husband doesn't want to take a beach vacation. Alex is 29 and has $90,000 in student-loan debt. She's also woefully underemployed, helping to care for her disabled mother, and doesn't see a future where she's earning enough money to make a dent in her debt."It was kind of embarrassing and shameful," Alex says of her ballooning debt. Why Is Alex Trebek – Host Of A Game Show, For Goodness Sakes – So Special?

Let one of his most famous contestants explain. Ken Jennings, owner of the longest win streak on Jeopardy, writes, “When the cameras stop rolling, Alex is a looser, even goofy presence. He takes studio audience questions at every break, sometimes slipping into funny accents or even bits of soft-shoe.” Maybe keep those cameras rolling next time, Jeopardy? – The New York Times
