The Rescue Review: Free Solo Directors Return With A Nail-Biting Doc About The Thai Cave Rescue [TIFF 2021]

E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin seem to have the market cornered on documentaries about people who do wildly dangerous, potentially deadly things. They helmed the nail-biting documentary "Free Solo," about rock climbing without any ropes or safety device. And now they're back with "The Rescue," a film that's primarily about the Tham Luang cave rescue, but is really about a group the cave divers who came in from around the world to help. Cave diving isn't a casual activity; it's incredibly diff...

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP/CBS13) — Emily Harrington, a mountain climber from Placer County, has become the fourth person, and the first woman, to free-climb Yosemite National Park’s El Capitan in a single day. While most of the country was focused on the results of the U.S. presidential election early Wednesday, the 34-year-old began to scale the 3,000-foot granite wall, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday. Harrington reached the top in 21 hours, 13 minutes and 51 seconds later....

How many more Thai soccer teams must be rescued from caves before Hollywood has its fill? At least one more. Universal has tapped the Oscar-winning filmmaking team behind Free Solo to helm their Thai cave rescue movie. Cardamom Pear Tea Bread

I watched Alex Honnold scale El Cap again last night and enjoyed it even more the second time; I think I might have been holding my breath through the entire first viewing of Free Solo (even knowing the outcome, this film is seriously compelling). I’m even more captivated by Honnold’s character though than his climb. What does it look like to be so okay with who you are that you’re able to live your life to the ultimate limits, even when others misunderstand you.

The Fight over Free Soloing

Has Alex Honnold’s free solo climb of El Capitan sparked more daredevils? At least one free soloist has fallen to his death since the film was released. In 2017, the day after Alex Honnold completed his free-solo ascent of El-Capitan, climbing journalist and author Daniel Duane wrote in The New York Times: “I believe that it should be celebrated as one of the great athletic feats of any kind, ever.”   A National Geographic documentary film crew captured the four-hour 3,000 foot ropeless a...

Fear, Preparation and the Comfort Zone

Some of the more memorable quotes I've heard in a while have come from a young rock climber, Alex Honnold, who free soloed El Capitan. In his effort Honnold accomplished something no one else has even attempted, let alone completed. And for good reason - after all, isn't climbing a 3,000 foot vertical wall with no ropes or protective gear a bit of a death wish?In an interview before he free soloed El Capitan, Honnold talks about risk, fear and constantly pushing himself beyond his own comfort...

Whicker: Bryson DeChambeau’s lab work pays off on Augusta’s back nine

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Bryson DeChambeau never has made a hole-in-one. But, you know, he’s been busy. Unable to figure out why his wedge shots weren’t performing just so, he had a little research session back home at Dallas National, one of Tom Fazio’s proudest designs. It lasted 14 hours. “They talk about over-thinking,” DeChambeau said. “Sometimes that’s necessary to go down the rabbit hole and say, okay, that doesn’t work. Overthinking eventually gets you to the answer. You just have to keep going do...

There are some prominent themes in this year’s crop. But deciding which of California’s nine parks to visit can be tough. We’ll help you decide by listing the single best things a...

Alex Honnold Breaks Down Iconic Rock Climbing Scenes

I’m not sure I can bring myself to watch Free Solo (my hands are getting sweaty and I’m feeling faint just thinking about it), but watching Alex Honnold critique famous rock climbing scenes from movies like Mission Impossible II, Star Trek V, and Cliffhanger is pretty entertaining and informative. It’s no surprise that with a few obvious caveats, Tom Cruise’s climbing scene in MI:2 gets high marks. The MI stunt work is always legit. Tags: Alex Honnold   climbing   movies   sports   video ...

Watch: Alex Honnold from 'Free Solo' Analyzes Climbing in the Movies

"It seems like a bit of a stretch…" Well, now. This is a rare example of an Oscar campaign actually resulting in something remarkably interesting that will last beyond just the awards season. As part of their coverage, they asked Honnold to analyze and break down various iconic rock climbing scenes from Hollywood movies. You know where this is going - it...
