Spring Returns

The time is here! The daffodils are beginning to bloom. From ‘Little Gem’ to ‘Ice Follies’ to ‘King Alfred’ and ‘Rijnveld’s Early Sensation’, flowers are emerging all over the property. They are not alone, either. Grape hyacinths, fritillaries, and squill have all sprung open this week, too.  There is often a push and pull at the beginning of spring. The winter weather is mostly gone, but nights can still drop below freezing and rain can feel more like a punishment than a pleasure. But, overall,...

Zack Snyder's Grand Embellishments Make Justice League a Better, Stranger Thing

For years, fans of director Zack Snyder have wondered, often to the point of questionable fervor, what could’ve happened in an alternate world where he got to finish 2017's Justice League. ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ Reveals New Joker Image as More Details on the Snyder Cut Emerge

It was a campaign that dominated the internet (and occasionally, Times Square billboards) for the better part of three years: #ReleaseTheSnyderCut. Fans spent years demanding that Warner Bros. release the original cut of Justice League from director Zack Snyder, who left the production partway through, with writer/director Joss Whedon stepping in to complete the film. But did this mythic cut actually exist? Well, yes and no, according to a lengthy profile on the coming release of Zack Snyder’s ...

CS Soapbox: Zack Snyder’s Justice League is Already Better Than 2017’s

CS Soapbox: 10 reasons Snyder’s Justice League is already better than the theatrical cut We are less than a month away from seeing Zack Snyder’s Justice League — a film I never thought was possible. Seriously, last year at this time this felt like a pipe dream. Or, at the very least, like something we would see in ten years as some half-assed assembly cut, ala Alien 3 or Richard Donner’s Superman II. Instead, we’re getting a fully realized, four-hour film with completed special FX, an all-ne...

Searching Calibre Library With Alfred

Since upgrading my iMac from macos Mojave to Big Sur I have been unable to use Alfred (search utility) to find books located in my Calibre library. Alfred will locate the author folder but not the individual books (all epub). If I create a new folder and just copy a bunch of books (and author folders) from the Calibre library folder into the new folder, Alfred finds the books as it should. As an experiment, I created a new Calibre library and copied (through Calibre) all my books into it. ...

How to use python/shell scripts to edit the metadata of selected book(s) in calibre?

It seems to me calibre has made good use of python for many purposes. So I'm wondering it there is a way to edit the metadata, e.g. adding tags, of selected book(s) in calibre window using python script? I know I can simply click "Edit Metadata" and use the interface to edit metadata but I'm here looking for a way of automation. (I'm using calibre on macOS and with applications like Keyboard Maestro or Alfred I can set a bunch of keyboard shortcuts to automate this process.) Any help will be ...

What do you want to be known for?

Tom Hall and his partners grew Ensslin and Hall Advertising into one of the top regional advertising agencies in less than a decade. The core of their success was the question that Tom asked every new client: “What do you want to be known for?” That’s great advice for marketing and advertising, but it’s great life and career advice, too.  What do you want to be known for? Do you want to be known for being kind, smart, successful, bold, or intuitive? Would you prefer to be compassionate, insig...

Banking and slavery: Switzerland examines its colonial conscience

BLM protests and fresh historical evidence are raising questions over the legacy of the founder of modern Switzerland, Alfred EscherAlfred Escher wielded so much power and influence during his lifetime that he was nicknamed King Alfred I. An immense bronze statue of modern Switzerland’s founding father stands, fittingly, in front of Zurich’s main train station. Escher was a politician, but he was also an entrepreneur who founded the country’s railway network along with the its leading university...
