The New-Age Rom-Com Tropes That Will Reshape How We Think About Love

We have entered a new era of romantic comedies, and like any new era, this one comes with a slew of distinctions from society’s previous form, all of which descend from one major shift. Much like the new philosophical way of thinking moved us into the Age of Enlightenment, and like the advent of the cotton gin and steam engine brought about the Industrial Revolution, society’s recent social progress has ushered us into the Rom-Comaissance — marked largely by the death of the classic rom-com trop...

UCLA men’s basketball still eyeing first-round bye in crowded Pac-12

LOS ANGELES — UCLA barely survived against the last-place team in the conference, needing overtime to defeat Cal, which hasn’t won a game since before Christmas. But at the final horn, worry evaporated into relief, because at this point, any win will do for the Bruins. After its comeback victory Wednesday that ended its three-game drought, UCLA rose into a four-team tie for sixth place in the Pac-12. Saturday’s opponent Stanford is one of the teams stuck in the six-loss log jam. With eight teams...

‘Crashing’ Creator and Star Pete Holmes Discusses Last Night’s Timely Episode, “MC, Middle, and Headliner” [Interview]

Pete Holmes is more successful in season 3 of Crashing, but not much happier. The generally happy-go-lucky comedian is playing for churches and getting laughs, but he’s not performing like himself, worsening his struggle to find his voice or sense of self in the comedy world. Holmes – the character – hits some professional and personal lows this season. While the Judd Apatow-produced series often shows the joy and camaraderie in Holmes’ standup career, it’s usually about failure and not always ...

Talk in the Raturday Night Café and the Google search it inspired.

Click to enlarge and clarify...Here's a link to last night's café."Marriage is the death of hope" brings up webpages that purport to quote Woody Allen. I'm dubious. "Marriage is the death of romance" gets me to some boring relationship advice plus the assertion that it's the translation of a Chinese proverb:I'm dubious. It used to be very common to hear characters on TV (often in ads) say "Ancient Chinese wisdom" (in a fake Chinese accent) followed by something in the form of a proverb (almost a...

‘What Men Want’ Review: The Gender-Bent Remake Fumbles an Already Bad Premise

From the get-go, What Men Want feels like a relic. Even though it follows the current trend of gender-bent remakes, flipping a previously male-led film into one starring a female character, What Men Want astonishingly feels even more backwards than the 2000 Nancy Meyers film upon which it’s based. For a film that touts female empowerment and regularly throws around mentions to the “Me Too” movement, What Men Want is a shallow, retrograde workplace comedy that is barely funny. Taraji P. Henso...

Halfway through Pac-12 play, UCLA men’s basketball is well out of NCAA picture

LOS ANGELES — Prince Ali didn’t put his practice jersey on before speaking to reporters Tuesday. Instead, the redshirt junior guard wore a gray T-shirt with “welcome to the Big Dance” printed in block letters across his chest. A reporter asked where he got it. “From the First Four last year,” Ali responded, smiling. The Bruins barely slipped into the NCAA Tournament last year, banished to a play-in game for the first time in program history, but halfway through the Pac-12 season now, they would ...

Our Brothers Who have Transgressed Against Us | Imam Omar Suleiman

As the Khawarij rebelled against Sayiduna Ali , murdered his companions and relatives (and even eventually him), and inflicted all sorts of havoc on the Ummah during his reign, his followers who were bewildered by these people that read Quran and appeared so religious yet acted so ungodly asked him if they were disbelievers or hypocrites (in the major sense of the word that entails disbelief). Ali who had suffered at the hands of the Khawarij more than his followers responded by saying, “rather...
