Whicker: Hard to argue that Tiger’s comeback isn’t the ultimate

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The Masters is not timeless. You have to complete it within the light of day. On Sunday it began right after sunrise, in order to beat an epochal storm that only grazed Augusta. That meant Tiger Woods and his circle could celebrate longer and maybe even catch Game of Thrones. Woods, again, had won his. The long aftermath also provided a chance to rank the great comebacks in sports. Since we compulsively rank quarterbacks, restaurants, Springsteen songs and gastrointestinal medicin...

‘Praja Vani’ editorial asks a pertinent question: why is the BJP only making communally provocative statements even after getting a majority and a full five years in office?

Yogi Adityanath talks of Ali and Bajrangbali.Maneka Gandhi threatens to Muslims to vote for him. Praja Vani, the respected Kannada daily, asks a pertinent question—why is the BJP making only communally provocative statements?—and the proceeds to provide the answer, two answers actually. The Real Meaning Of "Only Child Syndrome"

Whether you are one or you know one, most of us have a perception of what we think only children are like — and unfortunately, these views of only children are not always positive.People often assume that only children are spoiled, self-centered, aggressive, narcissistic, dependent, weird, and don't work well with others. Think about the fictional Blair Waldorfs, Veruca Salts, and Veronica Lodges of the world. Some people refer to this cocktail of characteristics as "only child syndrome," which...

Patrick Reed’s Masters Distractions

Sports captures our imagination in so many ways. One of the aspects that feeds our passions about these games…(and they are games and really do not matter in the true big picture) is the battle of rivals. If a sport is lucky to have true rivalries then it is all the more interesting. Would the Yankees really be the Yankees without their mortal enemy the Red Sox? Would Ali be Ali without Frazier? Would the Patriots be the Patriots with… Continue Reading →

Dancing, blowing horns and shouting freedom slogans, some demonstrators also called for the entire political elite to go, saying that while they were against Bouteflika they also rejected the army's intervention in civilian political life. "We have only one word to say today, all the gang must go immediately, game over", said Ali a merchant, as other protesters shouted "the people want the fall of the regime". How Black-Asian Conflict Plays Out In New York City's Elite High Schools

This year, out of the 895 students accepted to Stuyvesant High School, New York City’s most selective specialized high school, only seven were Black, less than 1% of this year’s incoming freshman class. Meanwhile, 33 Latinx students (3.7%), 194 white students (21.7%), and 587 Asian students (65.6%) were also offered spots. Overall, Black and Latinx students make up 70% of the city’s public school system, but together they only represent a little over 10% of those admitted into the eight academi...

UCLA gymnastics coach Valorie Kondos Field brings her unique greatness to Pauley Pavilion for the last time

LOS ANGELES — There might never have been a more impossible task than to think of the quintessential Valorie Kondos Field story, an anecdote to best describe the legendary head coach who will coach in her final home meet Saturday. Her gymnasts, past and present, rack their brains. How can they possibly sum up the seven national titles, 37 years and countless life lessons? “I’m so nervous,” said former UCLA gymnast Samantha Peszek, who likely never uttered those words during her illustrious gymna...

Bank heist takes writer from stories to ‘Crime Beat’ podcast and now the movie ‘Finding Steve McQueen’

Sixteen years. It feels like forever. I had reddish hair then. Today, it’s almost totally gray. My twins were 7 years old then, still wrestling with their dad and fretting over wiggly teeth. Today, Alison and Dylan just turned 23, and we wrestle with income tax forms. My other son, Trey, hadn’t yet been born. Sometime in the beginning of 2003, a couple of months after the Angels won the World Series, I tracked down a guy named Harry Barber. He had played a prominent role in the biggest bank heis...

Bernie Sanders Boosts Foreign Policy Cred For 2020 With Yemen Vote Win

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) scored a major victory on Thursday when the Senate passed his resolution to end U.S. involvement in the Yemen civil war — one that could help his 2020 prospects. The Senate passed a resolution to defund America’s support for the Saudi-led efforts in the humanitarian disaster, a rare bipartisan rebuke to President Trump’s cozy relationship with Saudi Arabia. Sanders has led on this issue for years, working closely with Sens. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Chris Murphy (D-CT) to ...
