Sure Looks Like Sacha Baron Cohen Got A Right-Wing Rally To Do A Racist Sing-Along

The comedian and prankster Sacha Baron Cohen appears to have duped a right-wing group this weekend, leading to a racist sing-along that got some in the crowd chanting lines such as “sushi eaters, what’re we gonna do? Inject them with the Wuhan flu.” Backed by a five-piece band, a man in lumpy overalls and a European accent goaded the Olympia, WA crowd into a call-and-response number. Witnesses suggested the man was Cohen. “Journalists, what’re we gonna do? Chop ’em up like the Saudis do!” he ...

Employment Law Checklist Project: Civil Emergencies & Employment Protection

A few weeks, I talked about the impact that a public health emergency might have on employers and the statute addressing such emergencies. Today, Governor Ned Lamont invoked those provisions in declaring a public health emergency. But in doing so, he also invoked another provision, Conn. Gen. Stat. Sec. 28-9 –– the civil preparedness emergency statute. And it’s that provision that — potentially — gives him broad powers unlike any that we see in normal times. The key provision here is Section 28-...

Voters guide to California’s 11 ballot propositions

On Nov. 6, voters will weigh 11 ballot propositions that, on their face, sound no more or less crazy than usual for a California ballot. There is a seemingly obligatory fight about the gas tax and four (!) propositions about housing. Other high-stakes proposals would put money toward water conservation and hospital construction. But, as ever, 2018 also will include propositions that seem aimed at narrower audiences. Should ambulance drivers be on call during meal breaks? It’s on the ballot. Shou...

Taken for a ride? Ambulances stick patients with surprise bills

One patient got a $3,600 bill for a 4-mile ride. Another was charged $8,460 for a trip from one California hospital that could not handle his case to a facility that could. Still another found herself marooned at an out-of-network hospital, where she’d been taken by ambulance without her consent. These patients all took ambulances in emergencies and got slammed with unexpected bills. Public outrage has erupted over surprise medical bills — generally out-of-network charges that a patient did not ...
