Comment on boozy baked french toast by Amy

Great recipe! Thanks! We like it for Easter Breakfast. Hi Arli! I was just about to make a grammar comment when I saw yours. This is a pet peeve of mine as it seems no one knows how to use “so and so and I” ( always when your are the subject ( at the beginning of the sentence) and “so and so and me” when you are the object of the sentence ( at the end). It’s simple really. After you and I have been irritatingly grammatical, I’ll make some French Toast for my grandkids and me. Thanks.

Comment on how to hard-boil an egg by Amy

Something to note: If you live at elevation like I do (5000 ft), water boils at a lower temperature than sea level (say NYC). I use this method, but following the timing exactly often yields slightly undercooked eggs, sometimes with runny whites (no thanks). I haven’t totally dialed the timing yet, but generally i leave them in the boiling water for a minute or so, before moving to cold water. Or in one version of this method, you leave them in the hot water (off heat) for 5 minutes before movin...

Deb, I have a crazy idea for the meringue. Caviats: 1) I carry my desserts via Lyft to another house. It’s only me and the driver, no other hands to help. 2) I am an experienced baker, but have no real knowledge of how different recipes could interact. I get ideas, then drive myself crazy trying to make it happen. 3) I need the dessert to look beautiful. I’m an interior designer–I can’t serve anything not lovely. Case in point: meringue cookies taste great and look awful. So, what if I follow yo...

Hmm. Now I’ll start researching drop meringue toppings, because that sounds delicious. Meanwhile, I found a bunch of recipes for Passover rolls, cream puffs, biscuits, and muffins, and made a spreadsheet comparing ingredients. One muffin recipe is close enough to your topping that I’m going to try yours with a combination of matzo meal and cake meal. I’m actually experimenting in advance–I usually prefer the more dangerous route of trying it at the last minute. I’ll let you know what happens.

Direction You Look is the Direction You Go

A friend from a long time ago, who I hadn’t heard from in a while, sent me an email with a wonderful nugget in it. I just got back from Oahu and had an interesting experience on Waikiki Beach.   My son and I were boogie boarding and there were several people taking surfing lessons out in the waves with instructors. As the intrepid beginners got up on their boards and surfed one of their first waves, the instructors would invariably be shouting directives to them. One of them was, “Direction ...

Comment on thick, chewy oatmeal raisin cookies by Amy

Hi, Deb: I just made these with no tweaks. They were easy to mix up and get into the oven, and the texture is GREAT! They are just not sweet enough for me. How much more sugar could I add (for next time) and not mess them up? PS = I got both of your cookbooks for my b-day and love them! Thanks! :)
