Comment on roasted pear and chocolate chunk scones by Amy

Unfortunately I had similar problems as others – the dough was extremely moist and the scones turned out very flat. I wish I had read the comments first and added extra flour, or stuck with the “very blueberry scones”, which turned out great.

Q2 Vacation Reading

I took an off the grid vacation last week. I needed it as I was pretty fried feeling on May 15th when I checked out. Amy and I went … nowhere. We stayed at home. I slept late each day. I exercised. . I napped. We finished watching Breaking Bad. I played with my Glowforge and made a bunch of Ear Savers. I wrote a little, but not too much, on my next book (The Entrepreneur’s Weekly Nietzsche: A Book for Disruptors.) I read two great memoirs, both by women I respect a lot. Hell and Other...

White Woman Who Called Police On Black Man In Viral Video Says Her ‘Entire Life Is Being Destroyed’

Amy Cooper, the white woman who called the police on a black man whom she claimed was “threatening” her life as they argued about her dog in a viral video, says she wants to “publicly apologize to everyone” involved. The man, Christian Cooper (no relation), recorded and posted a video on Facebook in which she told him she was calling the police “to tell them there’s an African American man threatening my life” after he asked her to leash her dog in the Ramble, an area of Central Park in New Y...

‘Fright Night 2: New Blood’ is a Direct-to-Video Sequel to a Remake, So You Can Guess the Quality

(Welcome to DTV Descent, a series that explores the weird and wild world of direct-to-video sequels to theatrically released movies. This week, we head to Romania with the Countess of Bathory.) Vampires are a common threat in horror movies, some would say far too common (and yes that someone is me). So it should come as no surprise that they’re also a frequent antagonist in DTV horror sequels. This column has already covered the sequel to 30 Days of Night (2007), and there are more on the horiz...

Whicker: Rams hope new defensive boss Brandon Staley is a quick fixer

It’s not a souffle or a roast duck. It’s football. The prep time is overrated. When Brandon Staley was coaching at John Carroll, there was no spring practice. At Hutchinson Junior College at Kansas, players constantly rushed through the turnstile, none available for more than two years. “When I got hired by the Bears, Khalil Mack showed up seven days before the first regular-season game,” Staley said. “And that was one of his best games. People wonder about it, but the competition starts when ev...

Comment on banana toffee cake by Amy

Made this once as muffin cups and it came out fantastic! So delicious! Just made it again, this time in an 8×8 pan. One toothpick poke came out clean, a second came out with a little batter but it looked more like a little glob of banana, so I pulled it out of the oven after about 32 minutes, because the edges were starting to look quite well-done. Unfortunately: the middle was *not* done. I put foil around the edges, put it back in the oven for another 10 minutes and got it to an acceptable poi...

Comment on key lime pie popsicles by Amy

To my dismay, I found that if you swipe a bit of Biscoff crunchy cookie spread/speculoos in the mold before pouring, it makes these popsicles extremely palatable to children. And adults. Weapons-grade goodness.

Techstars Entrepreneurship & Mental Health Series

Techstars just released a 4-part original video series on entrepreneurship and mental health. I’m featured in one of the four short (< 10 minute) videos. If there was ever a moment in time that challenged our individual and collective mental health, it’s the Covid crisis. When Techstars began working on this project last year, the focus was on increasing awareness of the issues around mental health and entrepreneurship. There was no anticipation of the additional pressure the Covid crisis wou...

What Day Is It?

Amy just walked in to our shared office (the “Library”) and said something about it being Tuesday. It’s gloomy in Colorado today. For the past few years, the month of May has been more like Seattle weather than Colorado weather, so while spring is transitioning into summer, heavy clouds hang over us. I seem to have two types of days right now. Type 1 is what happens between Monday morning and Friday afternoon. Zoom call after Zoom call. Lots of exogenous stress and anxiety. By the end ...

The 11 Day Power Play: Cancer Doesn’t Stop During a Quarantine, Neither Will We

While the world has stopped, schools have closed their doors for the rest of the year and all but essential businesses have shut down, cancer doesn’t care. Cancer doesn’t care about social distancing. It won’t temporarily pause and wait until this crisis is over. It’s a deadly disease that has no regard for anyone’s schedule. That message became crystal clear when I caught up with Amy Lesakowski, who along with her husband Mike, co-founded the 11 Day Power Play back in 2017. Since then, the a...
