Best local ski resorts near Zurich

Zurich, the financial capital of Switzerland, is home to world-class universities, multinational companies, and hip neighborhoods. The city has a lot going on, but during winter weekends, many Zurich residents leave town to hit the slopes. The Swiss Alps are home to many resorts, both big and not so big. Some you may have heard of — and many probably not. From this picturesque little city, it’s crazy easy to explore a huge variety of places loved by both locals and international visitors. We...

Avalanche at Swiss ski resort Andermatt buries 'a number' of people

Mountain rescuers and helicopters were searching last night for victims of four avalanches in Austria and Switzerland that injured at least two skiers. More holidaymakers were feared to have been buried under snow, Swiss and Austrian police said. After a big avalanche struck the Swiss resort of Andermatt, emergency workers rescued two people, who were airlifted to hospital with minor injuries. Four other skiers were pulled from the snow unhurt. The slopes were crowded when the avalanche occurred...

Beautiful villages in Switzerland

Zurich, Geneva, and Lucerne are easy on the eyes, but Switzerland’s true appeal lies in the more remote reaches of this small, mountainous country. There are dozens of adorable villages throughout Switzerland, many of them set against the towering Alps or alongside tranquil lakes, matching your Heidi fantasies perfectly. To pile on the charm even further, some of the villages are so isolated that the only way to reach them is by mountain train, cable car, or on foot — but the sceneries awaiti...

Best ski resorts in Europe

Europe has some of the world’s best skiing locations. Alpinism started in the Alps (no big surprise there) and modern skiing took hold here, spread to the USA, and then to the world. The Alps are known across the globe, but in the countless peaks and valleys, there are still many quiet, undiscovered locations offering world-class slopes and infrastructure. In the rest of Europe, from the Pyrenees to the Scandinavian countries, ski resorts are less in the spotlight, but skiing is a tradition no...

Furka Steam Railway – DFB AG

Traveling by Car I like traveling by Car. On June 4, 2016, on my way to Italy I traveled the Gotthard Pass as the Gotthard tunnel seemed to take a lot of time because of the traffic lights regulating the number of cars in the tunnel (two lanes only). There I noticed that the road to the Gotthard pass crossed the Furka Pass road. A road to the Rhone Valley in the Swiss Kanton Valais (or Wallis). In the past I had spent a couple of winter sport holidays at the other side of the Furka Pass in t...

The Ghost Towns Of Tourist Europe

“Both Andermatt and Gran Canaria struck me as crumbling vestiges that signify a dying generation of tourism — the type of vacation destinations that present-day visitors still book through a travel agent.”
