Today You, Tomorrow Me [Video]

I hadn’t heard of the filmmaker Chris Neal before I got an email from him about his short film. He says he drew inspiration from a Reddit comment from a few years ago to tell a fairly well-known parable in a modern setting. With a great cast and high production value, his rendition of the parable is compelling. He tells the original story story of, “Today you, tomorrow me”. Never in history have we had technology and tools we have now. We can tell great stories and have them broadcast far and...

Michigan's Jimmy Obertop ejected for...swiping dirt with bat? (Video)

Michigan Wolverines freshman designated hitter Jimmy Obertop was ejected in an egregious case of an overreaction by an umpire during Friday night's MLB4 Collegiate Baseball Tournament game against Vanderbilt. It happened in the top of the ninth inning with one out and Michigan holding a 4-3 lead. After taking a called strike two, Obertop put the tip of his bat down on the ground and swiped it back before stepping away from home plate to get ready for the next pitch. Apparently the home plate u...

This was a good week! Here’s why:• Apologies for vagueblogging, but it was one of those weeks where good news kept coming out of nowhere — and I can’t yet give you details. ‘Possessor’ Director Brandon Cronenberg on Crafting the Most Nightmarish Film of the 2020 Sundance Film Festival [Interview]

After an eight-year period of development, director Brandon Cronenberg returns with his sophomore feature Possessor , a seductive and macabre crime thriller that mixes body horror, near-future nihilism and noir elements to deliver a funky, freaky brew. What Counts as a New Argument in Reply

Apple Inc. v. Andrea Electronics (Fed. Cir. 2020) After Andrea sued Apple for infringing its U.S. Patent 6,363,345 (noise cancelling audio signal processing), Apple responded with two inter partes review (IPR) petitions.  The PTO initiated both petitions and eventually cancelled all of the claims except 6-9.  Apple then appealed – asking that they all be invalidated. The invention sets noise-thresholds for a set of frequency groups and subtracts-out amplitude beyond a calculated “future minimum...

Comment on falafel by Andrea

I think you may need to start again with a new batch. I’ve needed them to be very firm (al dente) and not soft or mushy in order to grind them and then fry them. This recipe is worth a second batch of soaked chickpeas!

Comment on black pepper tofu and eggplant by Andrea

This was crazy delicious. I didn’t quite have enough room for the eggplant and tofu on one pan – maybe use two pans so everything has room to roast. I only had regular sodium soy sauce – it was still really good, but intensely salty. I’ll get low sodium soy sauce next time. I may also add some broccoli or other green veggie next time.

A U.S. Plane Crashed in Afghanistan. Why So Many Believed a CIA Chief Was On It.

The wreckage of a U.S. military plane that crashed and burned on a snowy mountain peak in Afghanistan on Monday was still fresh when Iranian state TV ran a story claiming a top CIA officer was among the dead. Like all good propaganda, the story was mostly false, but with a scintilla of truth. Two American service members had been killed when the U.S. Air Force jet slammed into the side of the mountain, but U.S. officials insist there was no CIA onboard. A combination of bad weather and Tali...

Taylor Swift hasn’t been to a Grammys ceremony since 2016, when—at 26—she took home three trophies, including her second Album of the Year for the multi-platinum 1989. But the awards loom large in Taylor Swift: Miss Americana, the much-anticipated documentary (which premiered last week at Sundance and will hit Netflix on Friday, Jan. 31) that traces her life in the years that followed. Comment on chicken chili by Andrea

This is delicious! Smokey and complex for relatively little effort! I used a mix of black and pinto beans and made it on the stove. Definitely need to pre-soak the beans. I didn’t, and my cooking time was 1.5x longer to get beans soft, with considerable extra water added along the way
