New Study of 1980s Mars Meteorite Debunks Proof of Ancient Life On Planet

An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Guardian: A four billion-year-old meteorite from Mars that caused a splash here on Earth decades ago contains no evidence of ancient, primitive Martian life after all, scientists have said. In 1996, a NASA-led team announced that organic compounds in the rock appeared to have been left by living creatures. Other scientists were skeptical and researchers chipped away at that premise over the decades, most recently by a team led by the Carnegie Institut...

Extra Crunch roundup: RapidSOS EC-1, how to prep for an M&A exit, inside Genki Forest

According to one estimate, Americans call 911 about 240 million times every year. Sending emergency services to the right location sounds straightforward, but each 911 call is routed through one of thousands of call centers known as public safety answering points (PSAPs). “Every 911 center is very different and they are as diverse and unique as the communities that they serve,” said Karin Marquez, senior director of public safety at RapidSOS. One PSAP that serves New York City is a 450,000-squ...

Do we have to age?

The biologist Andrew Steele thinks ageing is a disease that can be treated. But if we had a cure for getting old, what would that mean for us?When the biologist Andrew Steele tells people his thoughts on ageing – that we might one day cure it as if it were any other disease – they are often incredulous and sometimes hostile. Once, at a friend’s wedding, he left a group of guests mildly incensed for suggesting that near-future humans might live well into their 100s. A similar thing happens at din...

2020 Was, Against All Odds, the Year of the “Nice” Movie

Let’s be honest: 2020 was a bad year. Bad for the world, bad for the economy, and bad for the soul. Not to even mention the movie industry, which suffered blows from theater closings and studio delays. Entertainment seemed to be the last thing on people’s minds, and yet, entertainment is what many people turned to in the long months of lockdown. Comfort television became consumed as frequently as comfort food, and many people — after at first feeding into their paranoia with early viewings of C...

Optical illusion: Seeing color in a black-and-white image

Stare into the black circle in this video to get a lesson in chromatic adaptation from scientist Andrew Steele. This is definitely my favourite optical illusion—it's mind-bendingly effective but infuriatingly ephemeral, vanishing as soon as you try to look straight at it—and a fantastic illustration of how our eyes and brain together conspire so that what we see and reality aren't as synonymous as we like to think. America is no stranger to the outsized singing contest. We’re a country that made American Idol the top-rated show for years and we can thank The X-Factor for creating beloved boy bands like One Direction. Glee and Pitch Perfect were bonafide cultural phenomenons. But every year, across the pond, something strange and outlandish takes place that we still struggle to wrap our heads around: the musical smorgasmord that is the Eurovision Song Contest. Each year since 1956, at least 50 European ...

Mars rover finds ancient organic compounds that match meteoritic samples

NASA's Curiosity Rover discovered 'tough' organic molecules on Mars, increasing the chances that a record of potential life could have been preserved despite harsh conditions that can easily break down organics. Carnegie's Andrew Steele was a key member of the research team, whose work on this project built off his discovery six years ago of indigenous organic carbon in Martian meteorites. The organic molecules he found in 2012 are comparable to those found by Curiosity.
