Mighty Mouse in the Maungatuks

Yesterday I finally had the chance to ride the little WR in the mighty Maungatuks - a place that Colin had been promising would be fun and challenging.  Hence the tyre changes earlier in the weeks before... So, on a drizzly Saturday morning I loaded up that fabulously expensive new farkle (without dropping the bike on it and making me cry) and headed on down to meet Colin in Waikanae. Glutton for punishment

Every time I change a tyre I run into some little issue and end up saying "never again." The easy bit... But, the WR is only a little bike, how hard can it be? Let's get to work Turns out it is tricky and tubes can be pinched.  Something to be said for tubeless tyres alright... Got there in the end And then tonight. Remove axle nut and that's it... Then after much sweating... [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Figure of 8?

During the week a chap I know and do the odd ride with done gone and traded a bike in so had a new stead that needed blooding.  And he'd decided that Turakina Valley was just the place to do it... The meet-up point was once again in Sanson which the new bike managed to find ok and it was soon introduced to the Tenere. Wonder what's in that big box? Shiny! The new bike and rider [Author: Andrew Thomson]

From Competitors to Customers: A Look at Why Large Corporations are Becoming Better Clientele for Small Businesses

By Andrew Thomson Large corporations and small businesses have not always had the most friendly relationship. The corporate giants are often seen looming over the “little” businesses and startups, taking away market share and raising prices so they can’t compete. Meanwhile, many disruptive startups have faced a backlash from larger corporations claiming they aren’t playing fair – just think of Uber. However, this frosty friendship is warming up. Corporations have awoken to the fact that these sm...

Scrubbing in

So I had this new tyre to sort out... Speaking to Colin on Saturday he had a hankering to give his GSA some exercise and yeah, I had to try out my new hoop so we needed a plan... "Where do ya wanna go Colin?" "I don't care, I want to go for a ride on the GSA." "Ok, some gravel and some corners then..." "That will do." Sorted then... Actually, there was slightly (only slightly) more thought [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Out with the old...

So, on getting home from the TT2000 the rear E-07+ on the Tenere was looking reasonably second hand and just prior to meeting the Aussie Invasion it decided that it would generate a slow leak.  At 5,500km I was not that impressed - the previous Dakar versions of the E-07 wore a lot better and gave me all the "off road" performance I needed. So, with not more Dakars available I decided swap [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Getting dirty

I was up early on Anzac day so I could attend the Dawn Parade.  This meant that by about 9am brekkie was a memory, the dog had been walked and I still had plenty of daylight left to get the lawns mowed and...well, why not go for a little pootle? Ever since acquiring the littlest Yammy I'd been keen to hit North Range Road on it.  This "road" is punctuated by numerous bog holes, puddles that you [Author: Andrew Thomson]

The Zumo returns...

So the new 595 lives on either the Tenere or the Connie, but the old 550 still goes - what to do with it? Well, while it does get used in the car (primarily as a bluetooth speaker/mic for my phone), but I still have 3 motorcycle mounts.  And it just so happens that I have 3 bikes, one of which has no GPS - oh no! So yep, the 550 has found its way onto the little WR. After rummaging around in [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Tag

Yep, yesterday Phil moved the tag and Owl announced that he was going to go get it today.  Well, we couldn't have that could we? Gotcha! KTM's are too slow to get up in the morning... It was actually a really nice day for a wee pootle but in the end I didn't go that far at all to pick the new tag. It's pretty tricky spot to find and if Owl doesn't get it this afternoon then it's bound [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Zig Zagging

Only a short ride of around 90km this weekend.  I'd done a little maintenance job on the WR and thought that like a little like a Gurkha's kukri, the bike couldn't be put back in the shed without a quick squirt. After topping up with a ridiculous amount of fuel (5.5L), I puttered out of town and made for Watershed Road to hit some gravel as soon as possible. Again it took me a little while to [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Aussie Invasion

What again! For a while Glitch from AusTouring.com had been planning yet another trip over to The Land of the Long White Cloud and while I and a few others on AdvRider had been trying to put him off with our hopeless suggestions, crappy photos and general misinformation and unhelpfulness, he was still keen! After being let into the country last weekend, by Thursday they'd made it to the [Author: Andrew Thomson]

A small celebration

Today, our local Spitfire (yes, we have one!) celebrated ten years of flying since her restoration and luckily I spotted the post on Facebook.  As you can see from the below, there were questions on whether this celebration should go ahead but I like that second paragraph: So, I raced home after work and grabbed my camera and tore out to Ohakea on the Tenere (glad I had chosen her today [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Coming Home - Thursday

Thursday was the day that had seemed so far away a week ago and the day that we dreaded.  Yep, it was the day we had to say goodbye to the South island and head home to mentally prepare for the return to work. I met Colin in Richmond and after a nice ride over the Whangamoa and Rai Saddles we had a quick stop in Havelock. Preparing for work... Next up was a trip through Queen Charlotte [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Coming Home - Wednesday

On Wednesday we stayed based in the Nelson/Tasman area with plans to do some exploring over the hill in Golden Bay. Around nineish I road across to Motueka to meet up with Colin and another mate of his, Mitch.  Mitch is (actually was now) a DR (Wee-strom now) rider who has been around a few more summers than both Colin and I and knows how to punt a knobbly shod DR... Our first little squirt was [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Coming Home - Tuesday

After our rest day (only around 385km) we had slightly bigger plans for Tuesday.  We had to be in Richmond/Motueka by the end of the day but we couldn't just ride straight there now, could we? Colin was dead keen to ride out to Karamea and then walk the Heaphy Track so that's how we kicked off the morning... The lady at the motel was good enough to allow us to leave our panniers at the motel so [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Coming home - Monday

After our big weekend of riding a decent sleep (in a cold motel) followed by a later start was in order.  We got away from the motel at around 10am and took a short ride up to Kaipoi to checkout Motomox and get Colin some flash new trou. We spent a fair bit of time there chatting to the owner, looking at all sorts of farkles and riding gear and checking out some of his photos.  The mapping [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Takapari Road

While we were away down South, Colin and I had plenty of time to hatch plans for future rides.  I was dead keen to get my first WR adventure done before going back to work so by hook or by crook I was going to be going somewhere this weekend... Colin hadn't managed to get in enough riding while we were away so he decided that he was a starter for some WR action too.  Unfortunately, his little WR [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Meet Mighty Mouse

Ok, so before I disappeared off to take part in the TT2000 I did something foolish and bought another bike.  Except it wasn't foolish - I needed another bike for my single car garage (now containing 3 bikes and a car). Enter the little WR who now shall be dubbed "Might Mouse": After chatting to Colin about his one I had a quick look on Trademe and stumbled on this one.  It looked like it was [Author: Andrew Thomson]

#9 done and dusted

Yep, Colin and I have managed to wobble our way around the South Island and complete the required 2,000km and 100,000 points to qualify (subject to final check by the boss man) as finishers in the TT2000. Well, perhaps we're not that great at maths, cos we seem to have ended up with 216,000 points and 2,253kms... Ignore times - newbie Garmin 595 owner stuffed up resetting thing... On the road

Yep, given up working for 8 days and vamoosed - it's TT time! Last night I rode down to stay with Colin and save me an even earlier start and then Colin introduced me to a BMW custom... After a really nice crossing we fuelled up in Picton and started the trip down to Christchurch.  In Blenheim we starting seeing temperatures with a 3 up front so keeping moving was the name of the game.  A [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Warming up

On Saturday I got a phone call with orders that I was riding on Sunday.  Colin had a hankering for a trip up the Turakina Valley and had already told Carl he was coming - he obviously needed some assistance so he didn't get into any trouble... So, come Sunday morning, I opened all the vents on my gear and saddled up to go over and meet the guys in Bulls.  Naturally I was super organised, I had [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Fresh ergs

So at just under 54,000km (that's 83,000km sooner than on the Connie), I've been forced to invest in a new battery for the Tenere.  I blame the previous owner... For a few weeks starting the bike has been a little more feeble than normal (the bike has always sounded like it was slow cranking - two big slugs to spin I 'spose) and on one after work start it sounded particularly sluggish and the [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Blog Comments V2

All righty then, I seem to have worked out my problem and can now comment from my new laptop... It appears to be a Chrome extension called Ghostery (an ad blocker) and I think that an update (or perhaps fresh install in this case).  Selecting "Trust Site" or disabling the "Enhanced Anti-tracking" seems to do the trick.  Uninstalling also works...
