Angels reliever Cam Bedrosian elects for free agency after clearing waivers

Cam Bedrosian, who improved his ERA each of the past three years, became a free agent on Friday after he cleared waivers and rejected an outright assignment from the Angels. The Bedrosian move was the most surprising of a few moves the Angels made as they adjusted their 40-man roster. They also lost reliever Jacob Barnes, who was claimed on waivers by the New York Mets. Catcher Jose Briceño and infielder Elliot Soto both accepted outright assignments, and Justin Anderson was reinstated from the ...

Alexander: This year is ‘Next Year,’ but Dodgers shouldn’t suffer any dropoff

Even after the crowning triumph, the magical night that was 32 years in the making, the business of baseball doesn’t stop. This email clattered into the inbox Wednesday morning: “MLBPA News Release – 147 Players Become XX(B) Free Agents 10.28.2020.” These are the players who, with six years of major-league service and expiring contracts, automatically became free agents the moment the World Series ended. The list will change in weeks to come as other players’ options are picked up or declined, b...

Seven Dodgers among players who become free agents following World Series

The Dodgers waited 32 years to win a World Series. But the business side of Major League Baseball waits for nothing. Seven Dodgers were among the 147 players who became free agents the morning after the conclusion of the World Series – third baseman Justin Turner, outfielder Joc Pederson, infielder/outfielder Kiké Hernandez and pitchers Blake Treinen, Alex Wood, Pedro Baez and Jake McGee. More players will become free agents in the next two months as options are exercised or declined and teams c...

"Right now our country's gloomy/Fear is in the air/But when Joe's president/Hope is everywhere/Troubles fly away/And life will easy flow/Joe will keep us safe/That's all we need to know...."

Cher weighs in — that's all you need to know — at the 2020 I Will Vote Concert last night.  As New York Magazine explains, "Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe" is an old song — Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg song from the 1943 film musical "Cabin in the Sky." Here's its original context — question whether there's a problem of racial appropriation — with the devastatingly sweet Ethel Waters:   Original lyrics: "It seems like/Happiness is just a thing called Joe/He's got a smile that mak...

‘Joctober’ continues for Dodgers’ Pederson in Game 5 of World Series

In the first postseason plate appearance of Joc Pederson’s career, in Game 1 of the 2015 National League Division Series, he was intentionally walked by New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom. It’s been more than a year since anyone intentionally walked Pederson, though that could change soon. His home run in Game 5 of the World Series padded the Dodgers’ lead early in a 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays, and it gave Pederson four hits in 10 at-bats in the series. “They don’t call it Joctober for ...

Angels pitcher Griffin Canning among Gold Glove finalists

Griffin Canning was listed among the three finalists for the American League Gold Glove at pitcher on Thursday. He is the only Angels player with a chance to win a Gold Glove when the winners are announced Nov. 3. The other two finalists are Kenta Maeda of the Minnesota Twins and Zach Plesac of the Cleveland Indians. Gold Gloves are normally determined by a vote of managers and coaches, along with a statistical component, but this year only the metrics were used because teams did not play games ...

History isn’t totally against the Dodgers Friday night … just mostly

The Dodgers face an elimination game tonight, but their fans should realize history is not totally against them. (Of course, it would help if they still had Josh Beckett on their pitching staff. Stay with me, and it’ll become clear.) In the history of baseball, there have been 13 comebacks from 3-1 deficits in best-of-seven series, similar to the one the Dodgers face against the Atlanta Braves in the National League Championship Series. Keep in mind, of course, that none of those series had the ...

Angels’ GM search won’t be completed until after World Series

The Angels are “not close” to making a decision on their next general manager, with the hire to be made “definitely after the World Series,” according to a source involved in the search. Dave Dombrowski has been reported to be a likely candidate for weeks, and the list of logical candidates would include...

Angels grant permission for Tony La Russa to interview for White Sox managerial opening

The Angels have granted the Chicago White Sox permission to speak with Tony La Russa about their managerial opening, which was created this week when they surprisingly fired Rick Renteria. He is currently assisting with the search for a new general manager, replacing Billy Eppler. La Russa, 76, last managed the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011. That ended a run of 34 consecutive se...

For Gonsolin, it will be his postseason debut and his first start since Sept. 26 when he went six innings against the Angels and earned the win despite giving up a season-high four runs. He was 86. Angels president: ‘Something is not right in our organization’

As the Angels begin their search for a new general manager, John Carpino said they are open-minded to anything. Five straight losing seasons has taught them that much. “Obviously, we’re not doing it the right way,” the Angels president said Wednesday morning. “We’re not winning games, so something is not right in our organization. So we have to look at it. You have to look in the mirror and find out, ‘OK, what’s happening here that’s causing us not to be playing this week or deep into October?’ ...

Dodgers succeeded in an irregular regular season — can they top it with a championship?

LOS ANGELES — This is the reason for the season. There was a time not so long ago when postseason baseball seemed aspirational at best. Remember the acrimonious negotiations that led to “Tell us when and where?” But Major League Baseball emerged from that June gloom, marched into empty stadiums and forged on through intake testing, daily testing, protocols, coronavirus outbreaks on multiple teams and blocks of postponed games. All for this. No, not the chance to crown a champion in this most irr...

Angels’ next GM will face plenty of roster questions to end playoff drought

The Angels’ next general manager will likely have a busy offseason. Billy Eppler was fired on Sunday, following five straight losing seasons that no doubt frustrated owner Arte Moreno as well as the fans. Mike Trout is certainly frustrated, as he said on Saturday that the time is now for the Angels to do what it takes to get to the postseason. Baseball made it. Getting to Sept. 27 was no certainty. But by the end of the day Sunday, 900 games had been scheduled and 898 of them had been played. ...
