Watch St. Vincent Perform A Theatrical Version Of “The Nowhere Inn” On Kimmel

St. Vincent mastermind Annie Clark is having a busy year. First, there was the new album Daddy’s Home. Then, there was The Nowhere Inn, the sort of Lynchian mockumentary that she made with Carrie Brownstein, as well as that movie’s soundtrack. Lately, St. Vincent has also returned to the road, playing high up on the bill at a lot of festivals. And last night, St. Vincent were the musical guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where they performed “The Nowhere Inn,” the title track from the new film.

“Daddy’s Home,” the sixth studio album from St. Vincent, arrived in May, but Annie Clark, the artist behind the stage name, says it hasn’t felt fully finished until now. “A record doesn’t really feel complete to me until I’ve actually played the songs for people and with people in real-time,” Clark says on a recent phone call. “Because you get to see how the energy in the crowd changes. “You get to see, like, ‘Oh, they’re all singing along to that part,’” she says. “You get to know in a real way...

St Vincent: ‘I’d been feral for so long. I was sort of in outer space’

Inspired by her father’s release from prison, Annie Clark’s new album asks where to run when ‘the outlaw’s inside you’. She discusses his incarceration, the delusions of love – and why she remains as perverse as everThe cover of St Vincent’s 2011 album, Strange Mercy, depicts an open mouth and teeth shrink-wrapped in white latex. It provoked much fascination. Was it Annie Clark’s mouth? She wouldn’t say. One song involved a pearl-handled whip, wielded for pain over pleasure; others negotiated su...

The Right Wing’s New Election Boogeyman

For the Democrats dead-set on defeating Republican Sen. Susan Collins this November, a recent poll of the Maine U.S. Senate race brought seemingly distressing news: Democratic candidate Sara Gideon was leading Collins by a single point, per the survey, but a Green Party-aligned independent candidate was polling at a surprisingly high 6 percent. Given that Green candidates usually pull votes from the left, Collins’ legions of detractors on Resistance Twitter cried spoiler—fearing that in a tight,...

St. Vincent on Melding ‘Words + Music’ for an Audible Audiobook, and Staying Creative Amid a Pandemic: ‘I’ve Got a Loaded Magazine Clip, Waiting!’

Susan Collins’ Obama-Era Vote Against Pandemic Funding Comes Back to Haunt Her

For Maine Sen. Susan Collins, a lifelong Republican who believes in limited government, funding for pandemic flu preparations didn’t belong in the Obama administration’s economic stimulus plan. She lobbied hard to kill the money, and as one of only three Senate Republicans supporting the package, she had a lot of leverage with an administration desperate to show bipartisan support in a global economic crisis.   President Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 in February...

‘The Nowhere Inn’ Review: St. Vincent and Carrie Brownstein Tackle the Surreal Side of Fame [Sundance 2020]

On stage, St. Vincent is sexy, mysterious, and seemingly all-powerful. Offstage, though, she’s Annie Clark – and Annie Clark is a bit of a boring nerd. Or so says The Nowhere Inn, a surreal meta-comedy about fame – and what we demand from the famous people we idolize. Framed as both a faux documentary and a narrative film, The Nowhere Inn finds Clark’s best friend Carrie Brownstein, of Sleater-Kinney and Portlandia fame, setting out to make a documentary about St. Vincent on tour. But as Clark ...

‘The Nowhere Inn’: Film Review

Bill Benz’s high-concept rock mockumentary opens with a white limo speeding through the desert. The driver (Ezra Buzzington) has never heard of his passenger, the cult sensation Annie Clark, better known by her stage name St. Vincent. “I’m not for everybody,” she shrugs. The driver is unsatisfied. “Don’t worry,” he glowers. “We’ll find out who […]

Carrie Brownstein and St. Vincent on Their Sundance-Bound Movie ‘Nowhere Inn’

As bizarre as much of the new film “Nowhere Inn” is, cowriters and costars St. Vincent — aka Annie Clark — and Carrie Brownstein are on somewhat familiar ground when it comes to playing with rock-star/media archetypes in deadpan fashion. They’d previously had satirical fun with some weirdly comedic short films they made to promote […]

By LISA MASCARO, ERIC TUCKER and ZEKE MILLER WASHINGTON — Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell abruptly changed his proposed rules for President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial , backing off the condensed two-day schedule to add a third for opening arguments after protests from senators, including Republicans.
