‘The Virtuoso’ Review: Don’t Let the Title of This Amateur Thriller Mislead You

Less than a week after Anthony Hopkins won his second Academy Award for “The Father,” a dud called “The Virtuoso” arrives to make you wonder if they gave it to the wrong guy. The lousy-followup phenomenon happens all the time (in part because people throw money at newly minted honorees, which explains how Halle Berry […]

Highly recommended — "The Father" (the film Anthony Hopkins won the Oscar for).

We watched this on Amazon Prime last night (paying $20 for the privilege). If anyone is wondering why the Oscar went to Hopkins, they need only watch the movie. This is a very cleverly structured depiction of elderly dementia, where what we see is the point of view of the person whose perceptions are deeply impaired. I won't say more than that other than it does the opposite of insulting your intelligence. It's not a heart-warming, sympathetic portrayal of unfortunate disease. I saw one revie...

Laura Trammell had a hunch that she’d do well if she got a chance to play “Wheel of Fortune,” and she wasn’t shy about saying so. “I had told my husband for years and years,” the sixth-grade teacher from Mission Viejo said. “I told him, ‘You get me on that show and I will win us some money.’” On the episode that aired Tuesday, Trammell did that and a whole lot more, winning the first honest-to-goodness house that “Wheel Of Fortune” has given away in its 46-year history. In 1998 — the year of "Titanic" — 57 million people watched the Oscars. This year, only 9.85 million watched.

In 1998, The Hill tells us: "The great Billy Crystal served as host of the show," but this yearThere was no movie anyone was buzzing about. No household-name stars were nominated unless Anthony Hopkins – who won his last Oscar 30 years ago – counts. There wasn't even a host for the show, because the Academy thought it was a great idea to eliminate the position for reasons unclear when a raw, unfiltered talent such as Ricky Gervais would have been just the person to lift our spirits.Oh, come on. ...

Set on a lonely, windswept island, ‘Limbo’ explores the heartache and humor of displaced refugees

On a desolate Scottish island, a group of refugees from around the world linger in isolation, awaiting word as to whether the United Kingdom will grant them entry into their world or send them back to Syria, Afghanistan, Ghana, Nigeria or wherever else they have journeyed from.  Despite its fraught situation, “Limbo,” which focuses on the story of Omar, a young Syrian man played with beautiful restraint by Amir El-Masry (“Rosewater,” “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”), opens with an absurdly funny sce...

Oscars 2021: ABC Executive Talks About the “Calculated Risk” of Ending With the Best Actor Category

The executive producers of the Oscars made several unconventional decisions that affected last night’s broadcast of the 93rd Academy Awards, but perhaps none were as surprising as switching up the order that the awards were handed out.
