A Paris Pied-à-Terre by Ishka Designs of Brooklyn

Anishka Clarke and Niya Bascom of Brooklyn’s Ishka Designs are an international duo–she grew up in Jamaica; he was born in London to Jamaican and Guyanese parents and raised in NYC. But neither had spent much time in Paris before Edouard, a French friend living in Brooklyn, came to them with an intriguing project: His childhood duplex near the Eiffel Tower–in a small late-19th-century building that originated as studios and living quarters for artisans working on the tower–needed editing and an ...

San Francisco's Board of Supervisors voted 10-1 to ban the smoking of tobacco in apartments. Weed is still OK because, well, there aren't many other places where it's legal to smoke it. Enforcement involves educating violators with fines of $1,000 per day for repeat offenders. — Read the rest

Respect for the Old: In a Tiny London Flat, Antiques, Vintage Finds, and Charm to Spare

The key to surviving this week without losing my mind was indulging in some joyful distractions, like playing with my dog, walking with friends—and perusing the Tat.London Instagram account, which traffics in interiors of the mostly-British, traditional-with-a-twist sort. If you’re into patina, pattern, color, sink skirts, and disheveled bookshelves (as I have been of late), the feed is a balm. Recently, I spotted a post on the particularly serene home of Georgie Stogdon, the founder of newish o...

Paddington Pied-a-Terre: A Colorful Small-Space London Design by Beata Heuman

If you ask Beata Heuman, the problem with most living quarters is that “people lack an imaginative approach.” The same could not be said of the rooms pulled together by the rising star interior designer. Heuman, 37,  is based in London, where she runs her own seven-person firm—in lieu of going to design school, she trained, starting at age 21, in the bustling office of Nicky Haslam, another fan of letting loose. Heuman grew up on a farm in northwest Sweden—her father is a farmer and her mother a...

Modern Meets Organic in the Brooklyn Apartment of Delia Kenza’s ‘Bad Ass’ Client

A sure-fire sign that a designer and a client are sympatico? When the client asks for the exact same furniture and lighting that the designer has in her own home. “She purchased her place and saw a photo of my Brooklyn home, and she said she immediately bought the chairs and light that I had—and then realized she needed my help and gave me a call,” explains designer Delia Kenza, of how she came to be hired. “The client’s vibe inspired the project. She appreciates things made by hand, prefers a v...

A London Designer’s Apartment Remodel for a Demanding Client (Her Mother)

After earning an architectural interior design degree from the prestigious Inchbald School and working for two design firms in London’s Chelsea, Lonika Chande felt ready to strike out on her own. What she needed was an initial solo project to show what she can do. That commission came from Lonika’s mother, Lucy Dickens, an artist (and great-great granddaughter of Charles Dickens), who dabbles in real estate: she and Lonika’s stepfather had bought a one-bedroom fixer-upper in Hampstead that they ...

A Classic Paris Apartment Gets a Color-Blocked Update for Two Graphic Designers

Fresh out of architecture school, Hélène Pinaud and Julien Schwartzmann of Heju Studio made their mark by coming up with clever, well-designed DIY projects, such as a Brass Wall Organizer and Homemade Terrazzo Table. These led to Paris boutiques designs  and the couple’s own kitchen upgrade using materials from the French equivalent of Home Depot: see Two Young Paris Architects Completely Redo Their Kitchen for Under $4,300. Their pleasingly clean-lined, pale-wood-meets-pale-pink style, in turn,...

A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That: A Celebration of Art and Design at The Residence in Copenhagen

Copenhagen gallery owner Tina Seidenfaden Busck is a master at the unexpected mix: in her world, stripes collide with florals, Noguchi lanterns mix with grandmotherly table lamps, Aalto stools are paired with Victorian fainting couches—and it all manages to look extraordinary. Back in 2011, Tina opened The Apartment, her influential design showcase set in a restored early 18th century apartment styled as living quarters, all of it for sale. The setup changes frequently—in 2014, we featured Ilse ...

The Comfort of Things: Artist Oscar Piccolo’s Modern Bohemian Studio Apartment

“I’ve never been by myself so much, but I’m treating this period as a good pause,” London designer Oscar Piccolo tells us. “I’ve always felt connected to domestic spaces so I am finding this aspect interesting. My home is my studio, really the two go hand in hand.” A 2018 fine arts graduate of London’s Chelsea College of Arts, Piccolo emerged as a multi-media talent to watch thanks to his Lampada Cappello, a serpentine lamp with a playful, hat-inspired shade that he sells on his website—and keep...

Très Chic: A Smart, Stylish Parisian Apartment Designed for a Young Family (and Cat, Too)

When we first encountered this exceedingly clever Paris duplex by SABO project, we wondered why it had been dubbed the “Sacha Apartment.” Is that the client’s name? Was it inspired by the street address? Turns out, Sacha is the name of the clients’ beloved cat. We should have guessed. Among the most salient features of this gut renovation, which combined two apartments into one, are the unexpected feline-sized pass-throughs carved into multiple walls on the first floor. The owners, a young coupl...

Old World Meets Modern: A Casual but Elegant Pre-War Flat on the Baltic Coast

Once again, we find ourselves in the familiar position of being utterly charmed by a Colombe Design project. (We’ve waxed poetic about their projects twice before: here and here.) There are similarities between the residences the firm designs—Old World high ceilings, striking architectural details, an emphasis on sculptural statement lighting—but this one, while just as elegant as the other projects, has a whimsical casualness all its own. This sophisticated but relaxed approach was largely info...

Soft in the City: Mandy Lee’s Serene Apartment in Hong Kong

A serious home renovation, the kind that involves more than just a new paint color or a powder room refresh, is an exercise in keeping sane. The months-long disruption, the draining bank account, the incessant dust, the steady stream of strangers in boots—none of it is something that most homeowners want to go through again. Mandy Lee, the blogger (Lady and Pups) and cookbook author (The Art of Escapism Cooking), lived through the down-to-the-studs ordeal twice…in nine years…in the same apartmen...

City Slick: A Cool Apartment for a Couple “Who Lives and Breathes Urban Life’

We get why so many urban dwellers we know prefer bikes to cars. Aside from the environmental reasons, finding parking for four wheels on city streets can be a real doozy, while finding parking for two wheels can be as easy as strolling through the front door. And now that we’ve seen this charming apartment in Vienna, we realize there’s yet another compelling reason to chose bikes: They make great art. Hanging front and center on the walls of the spacious entry are the owners’ bikes. “The bikes…h...
