Sales surge for fitness influencers, the coronavirus changes YouTube viewing habits, and Rihanna's TikTok house closes

Welcome to this week's Influencer Dashboard newsletter! This is Amanda Perelli, writing to you from my desk at home, and here's an update on what's new in the business of influencers and creators. This week, I spoke to fitness influencers on Instagram and YouTube who said they've experienced a surge in sales of direct-to-consumer workout services this month, as more people seek at-home workout alternatives amid the coronavirus pandemic.  This increase in engagement and sales has protected their...

Gimlet staff announce unionization plan following Spotify acquisition

Gimlet Media, creator of such excellent podcasts as Crimetown, Reply All, and Science Vs, was recently acquired by Spotify for $230m; in the wake of the acquisition, the staff have announced a successful unionization drive organized under the Writers Guild of America East (WGAE), which is also organizing Vox Media's team: the union will have about 80 members, drawn from the production, editorial, host, and reporting staff, but excluding managers, marketing and sales staff. The team is ...

Jibo the social robot announces that its VC overlords have remote-killswitched it, makes pathetic farewell address and dances a final step

Jibo was a "social robot" startup that burned through $76m in venture capital and crowdfunding before having its assets sold to SQN Venture Partners late last year. Earlier this week, reporter Dylan J Martin tweeted a video of a $899 Jibo robot bidding its owner farewell, announcing that the new owners of his servers were planning to killswitch it; the robot thanked him "very very much" for having it around, and asked that "someday, when robots are more advanced than today, and everyone ha...

Recode Daily: Why Google is shutting down Google+, Facebook’s tone-deaf camera device (re/code)

Plus, Taylor Swift dips her toe into politics with an Instagram post; former Trump aide Hope Hicks will be the communications head of the “New Fox”; gym selfies are changing the way we work out. Google is shutting down its Google+ social network for consumers following the revelation that a majority security flaw had exposed the private profile data of up to 500,000 users from 2015 to March 2018. Google opted not to disclose the software bug sooner over concerns that doing so would draw regulato...

A La Carte (March 19)

Today’s Kindle deals include quite a selection of books, many of them related to Good Friday or Easter. (Yesterday on the blog:  It Was Your Sin that Murdered Christ!) How Do We Encourage Our Children to See The Church as Valuable? Stephen Kneale writes, “We had an interesting, if perhaps emotionally loaded, discussion at our home group this evening. We have spent the last few months looking at our church membership covenant. We have six pledges that – whilst not quite a word...

Sex toy company admits to recording users' remote sex sessions, calls it a 'minor bug' (the verge)

I have some news: the Internet of Things is a mess. A hacked refrigerator sounds slightly scary, but a vibrator-controlling app that records all your sex sounds and stores them on your phone without your knowledge? That's way worse. Today, a Reddit user pointed out that Hong Kong-based sex toy company Lovense's remote control vibrator app (Lovense Remote) recorded a use session without their knowledge. An audio file lasting six minutes was stored in the app's local folder. The users says he or s...

Steve Bannon Suggests Having Too Many Asian Tech CEOs Undermines 'Civic Society' (slashdot)

In an interview last year with Donald Trump -- that The Washington Post resurfaced yesterday -- Breitbart News Network's executive chairman, Steve Bannon, suggested that there are too many asian CEOs in Silicon Valley. "He alluded to the idea that foreign students should return to their respective countries after attending school in the U.S., instead of sticking around and working at or starting tech companies," writes Ashley Carman via The Verge: Trump voiced concern over these students attendi...

The tiniest touchscreen "phone" of them all

VPhone is a wee "phone", surely the most wee of them all. It has a 1.54-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth, FM radio, pedometer, 128MB (megabytes!) of storage, a heart rate monitor, some social network-monitoring apps, and a choice of "simple and stylish" black or silver trim. The radio's quad-band GSM, so if you can get your hands on one it should work on T-Mobile and ATT in the US. Yes, there's also a 3.5mm phone jack. The Verge's Ashley Carman: Some of you might read these stats a...

Music Streaming Service Exclusives Make Pirating Tempting Again

The advent of online music streaming service has made it easier for millions of people worldwide to listen to all of their favorite songs, and convinced plenty to pay for music. But with the space of music streaming service getting increasingly crowded and artists beginning to do exclusive with select platforms, it has again become inconvenient for people to get everything they want with one subscription. The Verge's Ashley Carman writes that this is pushing many people to resort to piracy. Carm...
