Hollywood writers are firing their agents. Here’s why it matters

You may have heard that Hollywood writers are firing their agents en masse. Don’t panic. This isn’t a strike situation that threatens to shut down production and negatively impact the Southern California economy. It is, however, a fairly serious situation for the television industry especially, and could change the way show business has been conducted for decades. While several issues are in contention between the Writers Guild of America and the Association of Talent Agents as the entities rene...

The WGA and ATA Need a Voice of Reason (Column)

Where is Lew Wasserman when you need him? Hollywood could desperately use an industry statesman to step in and help bridge the acrimonious divide between writers and agents. The current vitriol is sure to be ratcheted up even more this week if the WGA and ATA make good on their threats to sue each other. […]

French to English financial translation: early registration ends April 21

Next up in my online course series is French to English financial translation, with expert financial translator and former commercial banker Judy Lyons. Judy taught the financial module of last year’s French to English Translation Workshop course, to rave reviews. I’m excited that she’s back to teach this course exclusively for beginning and aspiring financial translators (or experienced financial translators who want individual feedback on their translations). The early registration deadline is...

The WGA-ATA dispute -- Where do we stand?

Too early to tell. The WGA and agents (ATA) could not reach a deal by zero hour this past weekend so we all are obligated to fire our TV and movie writing agents. Where does that leave... [Author: By Ken Levine]

Federal gas tax increase gaining support, but political potholes remain

Driving vacations are much more enjoyable when gasoline is cheap and the person behind the wheel isn't as amped up as this guy! The surest sign that summer is on the way is not temperature changes, but increasing gasoline prices. Oil companies traditionally take advantage of the seasonal shift, as families here in Texas and elsewhere across the country load up their cars — and fill up the gas tanks — to hit the road. Not too long ago, I topped off my tank with regular at $1.89 per gallon. T...

The original post for this episode can be found here. John August: Hello and welcome. My name is John August and this is Episode 393 of Scriptnotes, a podcast about screenwriting and things that are interesting to screenwriters. Craig is off in London finishing up the sound mix for Chernobyl. So this was originally going to be a repeat episode but a lot has happened this past week with the agency agreement. So instead I wanted to bring on two writers to help us make sense of it all. First, Ch...

Industry Braces for ‘Wrexit’ if WGA, Agents Don’t Reach Deal

As the clock ticks down to Saturday’s deadline for the Writers Guild of America and talent agencies to reach a new franchise agreement, anxiety is rising over the impact on employment and dealmaking if writers and agents wind up parting ways. Industry sources said there have been back-channeling efforts among a handful of prominent showrunners […]

The Good and the Bad of the Old Aircraft Experience on American (Trip Report)

It’s been a long, cold, rainy winter (by Southern California standards), so I was thrilled at the prospect of joining some of my old America West friends at our annual spring training game in Phoenix. While the wind and cool weather kept it from being a shorts day, it was still well worth the trip. This ended up being a nostalgic ride on some older aircraft. On the return, it was a pleasant memory. On the way out? Not so much. I was going to use a friend’s buddy pass to get out to Phoeni...

Tenth Lawsuit Against Social Media Providers for “Materially Supporting Terrorists” Fails–Sinclair v. Twitter

This is the 10th different case where a judge has rejected allegations that Twitter and other social media services materially support terrorists. As with most of the others, the plaintiffs’ lawyers are Excolo Law and 1-800 LAWFIRM. I’ve blogged the other nine dismissals, so at this point, there’s not much new to say about this case. Most of the plaintiffs’ arguments have been rejected in prior cases, and the plaintiffs’ lawyers are building a thick wall of adverse precedent that has become near...

Turkish over and unders

Been looking at these over and under(s) for causal sporting..trap, skeet, etc; It looks like the Turkish manufactures have a lock on the more budget friendly models. I really can't justify spending 2k plus on a good Beretta or Benali. If I was going to get into serious competition than that would be another matter, but I have been reading lots of reviews and the result is hit or miss on many of these Turkish manufactures. CZ uses Huglo and I was looking at their stuff with a sharp eye. Did a lit...

Ten must-do tasks for your first year as a freelance translator

Your first year as a freelancer is a time of overwhelming highs and lows, plus a whole lot of analysis paralysis (Should I work on my website? No, my resume! No, getting certified. No, my marketing plan! No, I have no idea how much to charge, so what on earth am I doing looking for clients…). That reality comes flooding back to me every time I talk to a beginning translator. As with many hard-but-worthwhile endeavors in life, some of these trials cannot be circumvented; they can only be survived...
