Five, the self-driving startup, raises $41M and pivots into B2B, away from building its own fleet

We are still years away from a time when fully-autonomous cars will be able to drive us from A to B, and the complexity of getting to that point is likely going to need hundreds of billions of dollars of investment before it becomes a reality. That hard truth is leading to some shifts in the self-driving startup landscape. England’s Five (formerly known as FiveAI), one of the more ambitious companies in the space, is moving away from its original plan, of designing its own fully self-driving car...

Cruise can now transport passengers in self-driving cars in CA

Cruise recently received a permit to transport passengers in its autonomous vehicles in California. Granted by the California Public Utilities Commission, the permit is part of the state’s Autonomous Vehicle Passenger Service pilot. As part of the program, Cruise must provide data and reports to the CPUC regarding any incidents, the number of passenger miles traveled and passenger safety protocols. Cruise must also have a safety driver behind the wheel and not charge passengers for rides. Cru...

The Gruzovikus is an ‘intelligent’ freightliner truck that transports cargo without a driver

Without context, if you looked at the Gruzovikus, your first instinct would be to wonder why its cockpit is so slim. You’d then notice that the Gruzovikus has no doors… or windows. The Gruzovikus doesn’t need a driver, because it IS the driver. Designed by Art Lebedev Studio, this freight-carrying semi-truck comes with an incredibly slim profile, and is fully autonomous i.e., it doesn’t need a driver operating it, even remotely. The lack of a designer really informs the Gruzovikus’ design proce...

How the Future of Last-Mile E-commerce Delivery Could Change Urban Planning Forever

[Note from editor: originally published on AEC Labs] Earlier this summer, I participated in an internal AECOM client event that discussed the future of “integrated” mobility hubs in different types of geographic locations (urban, suburban, and rural). What is an integrated mobility hub? It’s our working definition for real estate or infrastructure development that incorporates mixed uses, smart-city technology, public spaces, and multi-modal transportation options, from autonomous vehicles and ...

Hyundai’s new hydrogen-powered truck will give the Tesla Semi a run for its money

I’ll admit I do have a tendency to speak in hyperbole, but this time I’m making an exception only because Hyundai’s truck shows ‘truckloads’ of promise. I’m talking clean energy-burning, hydrogen-fuel-cell powered, autonomous driving, zero emissions, zero noise semi-truck with an ergonomic design that looks splendid from the outside and provides a stunning panoramic view on the inside. I love my cushy desk-job, but damn, if I had a chance to be a trucker with a Hyundai HDC-6 Neptune, I’d proba...

Autonomous SmartDesk 2 Hybrid Edition Review

I was actually considering just upgrading my tabletop to a larger one when Autonomous reached out about reviewing their SmartDesk 2 Hybrid Edition. They let me select which version I wanted so I went with the white XL Top (70.5″ x 30″) with a white frame. This would give me more than enough room for my computer as well as monitor. Is this the desk you need for the ultimate PC setup? The post Autonomous SmartDesk 2 Hybrid Edition Review appeared first on ThinkComputers.org.

This autonomous self-flying drone is the action cameraman you’ve always wanted

Drones are great, but they’re as great as the person controlling them. If the person behind the controller is an absolute imbecile, your expensive state-of-the-art drone could turn into shrapnel in just seconds… the video above should be proof enough. Skydio 2 was designed to be capable of self-navigation so you don’t need to constantly pilot it with a phone and controller. With six color cameras that have a 200-degree field of view, the Skydio 2 is capable of sensing its surroundings, analyzi...

Researchers Taught Autonomous Camera Drones to Film Like a Hollywood Director

Skydio was one of the first companies to create a flying drone that can autonomously track, follow, and frame the action, but it was more concerned about not crashing than aesthetics. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University are taking the idea one step further by teaching camera drones how to not only fly safely but…Read more...

This is what self-driving cars would look like in an alternate reality

Taking a page from the dystopian future presented to us by the minds at Pixar through the 2008 animated hit Wall-E, Alexander Zhukovsky asked himself why electric cars look like… cars. Why don’t they look like Segways, hoverboards, or motorized wheelchairs, products that are, in theory, exactly the same hardware packaged differently. Zhukovsky’s vision for self-driving EVs are autonomous single-seaters that elegantly travel around cities and neighborhoods, on four wheels. Fashioned to look quite...

Waymo Picks Detroit Plant for Self-driving Vehicle Conversions

It’s a long way from the company’s fledgling, Phoenix-area autonomous ride-hailing service, but Detroit has enough available space and local talent for Waymo to sign a lease. EU to Require Speed-Limiting Tech in New Cars

Aimed at saving lives and preparing the general public for fully autonomous vehicles, the EU is en route to pass a measure that requires all new cars to be outfitted with speed-limiting features. According to a new study, the proposal will save around 25,000 lives and prevent 140,000 serious injuries. It won’t go into full effect until 2022, but the forthcoming years will be formative …

Algolux announces Ion, a development platform for autonomous vision systems

Algolux, founded in 2015, isn’t exactly a household name in the already-crowded world of automotive computer vision. But the Quebec-based startup has generated some interest among investors. For instance, it’s raised $13.4 million, including a $10 million Series A led by General Motors Ventures last May. Not bad, given the fact that it’s remained a virtual unknown, up until now. Today, Algolux is unveiling Ion, a platform that gives companies a set of tools and an embedded software stack to h...

Here’s how Lyft envisions self-driving cars communicating with pedestrians

The question of how self-driving cars will interact and communicate with humans is one that has come up before, but the answer is still up in the air. Google has been looking into this at least since 2012, and earlier this year, Uber filed a patent for using flashing lights and sounds to talk to pedestrians. Now, the United States Patent Office has granted Lyft with a patent for what it describes as an autonomous vehicle notification system. Lyft’s solution entails developing a predetermined ...

Yes. Muji is designing self-driving buses now!

The self-driving landscape seems perfect for a company like Muji, known for its minimalistic appeal and function-first agenda. Muji’s products look minimalist and beautiful without looking bland, and perform wonderfully for years… and the Gacha, a shuttle bus co-designed with Finnish autonomous driving company Sensible 4, follows that direction too, not just being innately Muji-esque, but also echoing the aesthetic direction that most self-driving cars are taking, of putting information at the f...

The ‘MEET’ is a self-driving virtual conference room from the year 2030

Designed for Spanish automotive manufacturer Seat, Miguel Mojica’s automotive concept named MEET is a compact, aerodynamic, slick car for 2030. Its purpose (aside from transportation, of course)? Being a space for meetings of both formal and informal natures. As cars move towards an autonomous future, the car interiors change too, adapting to a situation sans a driver, or passengers facing the road. The interiors become more independent, and start becoming the focus of the car’s design. It’s per...
