UCLA opens men’s basketball season at San Diego State in good litmus test

Support our UCLA athletics coverage by becoming a digital subscriber. Subscribe now. The COVID-19 pandemic halted the UCLA men’s basketball team’s late-season run that included 11 wins in its last 14 games last season. Unfortunately, the Pac-12 Conference tournament never got played, and March Madness had nothing to do with basketball. Roughly eight months later, the Bruins are asking themselves if they can pick up where they left off in Wednesday night’s season opener at San Diego State, wher...

Alexander: Cal Baptist is ready for its closeup

As those who follow college basketball in Southern California well know – particularly those whose loyalties lie outside of the Pac-12 schools – there is a caste system here. There is UCLA, there is USC, and there is San Diego State way down there near the border. Everybody else is jockeying for position, with UC Irvine’s two NCAA Tournament berths and four Big West regular-season titles (plus tying for a fifth) in seven seasons lifting it a bit above the pack. Cal Baptist is taking the road les...

Explore the Codex Zouche-Nuttall: A Rare, Accordion-Folded Pre-Columbian Manuscript

In the past two decades, the Latin American world has seen a tremendous resurgence of indigenous language study and literature. Some Mexican writers are “ditching Spanish,” Dora Ballew writes, for “Zapotec, Tzotzil, Mayan and other languages spoken long before Europeans washed up on the shores of what is now Mexico.” Large anthologies of such literature have been published since 2001. The move is not a recovery of lost languages and cultures, but an affirmation of “the number of people fluent i...

Here is what really scares ‘Belzebuth’ actor Tobin Bell

Actor Tobin Bell isn’t afraid to face demons, but he doesn’t like it. The 77-year-old is best known for portraying John Kramer/Jigsaw, the antagonist of the “Saw” horror film franchise. But in one of his latest movies, he’s dealing with religion, demonology and law enforcement in Mexico to help put a stop to a series of terrorist attacks against children in the Spanish-English language horror film, “Belzebuth.” The film is available via AMC’s Shudder streaming service and was released On Demand ...

Alexander: Terrell Gomez moves on, from CSUN to San Diego State

As a college basketball commodity, Terrell Gomez was desirable. Forget his 5-foot-8 stature. Instead, consider his production. The kid from Inglewood High made a name for himself in three seasons at Cal State Northridge: Big West Freshman of the Year and first team all-conference as a sophomore and a junior, averages of 19.2 and 19.8 points the last two seasons, a 43.6 percent career success rate from beyond the three-point line (44 percent this past year) and the durability to average more than...

Alexander: Here’s to the NCAA teams that should have been able to celebrate

There are no brackets. No analyses (or arguments) about seeding. No questioning whether the members of the Selection Committee actually, you know, watch basketball. But those items aren’t what we miss most about Selection Sunday, when the NCAA men’s tournament bracket was supposed to be revealed, or Selection Monday, when the women’s bracket would have been unveiled. What do we miss most? The snippets of celebrating players, be it the assurance of the game’s upper class or the immense jubilation...

CBS Sports’ Andrew Catalon On Mountain West Tournament: ‘There’s A Lot To Play For For San Diego State’

(CBS Local/CBSLA)- With a 29-1 record on the season and the Mountain West Conference regular season championship in tow, it is safe to assume that Brian Dutcher’s San Diego State team will be dancing in just a few weeks, regardless of the outcome of tonight’s semifinal game in the conference tournament. While a spot in the Big Dance is all but guaranteed, there is still plenty of debate surrounding the Aztecs. Normally, their record alone, combined with non-conference wins over Creighton, Iowa, ...

Why the mystifying axolotl must be saved from extinction

Today’s axolotls are experiencing extirpation, but scientists and pet enthusiasts are saving them from true extinction. Why? Axolotls have long fascinated the learned and laymen alike, thanks to the animal’s powers of regenerating and self-healing. While all organisms can regenerate to some degree, the axolotl’s capabilities are far more advanced. Historical documentation cites Spallanzani, in 1768, as the first Western observer of an axolotl’s complete regeneration of tail and limb. Then in 18...

Fifth Sun by Camilla Townsend review – a revolutionary history of the Aztecs

A famous narrative turned on its head – how the Spanish conquistadors, not the Aztecs, were driven by bloodlustIn the summer of 1520, the artist Albrecht Dürer viewed a sampling of the treasures the conquistador Hernán Cortés had recently shipped to Europe from the land that would later be called Mexico. In his diary, Dürer enthused about a golden sun “a whole fathom broad, and a moon all of silver of the same size”, plus “all kinds of wonderful objects”. “All the days of my life,” he wrote, “I ...

Feagin scores 21, No. 4 San Diego St beats Air Force 89-74

Feagin scored 21 points, hitting five 3-pointers, and the fourth-ranked Aztecs remained the nation's lone unbeaten team by beating Air Force 89-74 Saturday night. I just think I'm finding the rhythm finally,'' said Feagin, who has 54 points in his last three games, connecting on 14 3-pointers in that span. To start the year, my jump shot wasn't really going but it's starting to pick up at the right time, when things really matter.

She gets out of bed between 7:30 and 8 every morning. But that’s only if Levi, her 19-month-old son, lets her sleep in. After getting ready and eating breakfast, she drops Levi off at her boyfriend’s house and drives onto Interstate 405 for her hour-long drive to Westwood. From 10:30 to noon, she works with UCLA’s softball coaches in individualized practices since she has class during the team’s practice in the afternoon. Gary Parrish On San Diego State’s 22-0 Start: ‘Computer Numbers Suggest They Are Legitimate National Title Contender’

(CBSLA/CBS Local)- The madness of college basketball usually waits until March before kicking into high gear. That hasn’t been the case this season, with the revolving door at the number-one spot. However, in the midst of this topsy-turvy season, one team has been consistently excellent, and it’s not who you’d expect. Whicker: San Diego State basketball is 19-0 and not afraid of heights

SAN DIEGO — The moles get whacked, the tall poppies get cut off, and the No. 1 teams in college basketball fall off the mountain, nearly every week. San Diego State walks bravely toward the sun. The Aztecs are 19-0. Nobody else in the game is unbeaten. But nobody, among the 12,414 in Viejas Arena on Saturday, chanted “We’re No. 1” on Saturday or anything close to it. A No. 1 seed, perhaps? San Diego State will take that, but right now the Aztecs are putting themselves on that perilous tightrope....
