The Next 180 Seconds

When was the last time you asked, "Where did the time go?" Each day, 1,440 minutes go by; only later can we ask ourselves if we used them well, managed them poorly, or should have done something different. Asking where... [Author: Jason W. Womack, MEd, MA]

Leadership—Are You Using the Most Effective Ratio?

80/20, 50/50, 30/70—what’s the right ratio?  Leaders engage in a number of related activities including managing and leading, discovery and delivery, as well as giving and receiving feedback.  How much time should you spend doing each activity?  Of course, it depends on the situation. There is no one approach (ratio) that can be used in every situation. Versatility is key. You must determine what’s required to achieve your goals.    Managing and Leading How much time do you spend ...

Balancing Self-Advocacy Will Determine Your Next Promotion

During a recent keynote, I referenced research from The Sponsor Effect, which recommends women change their viewpoint on meritocracies. The research concludes that men and women think differently about who gets promotions: 77 percent of women say they believe promotions are driven by a combination of hard work, long hours and education credentials. In contrast, 83 percent of men say that who you know counts for a lot, or at least as much as how well you do your job. Why is this? Why isn’t exc...

The Leadership Seesaw

As a girl, I loved to play at the park.  The outdoors felt so expansive, open, promising.  Accompanied by the already wonderful feeling of being outside was the fact that other kids would be in the same space and I could socialize and share a sense of belonging with them as we ran, laughed, and played.  We were true creatives as our imaginations mapped out detailed imaginary scenes for playtime. For the more adventurous child, like myself, we would ensure that we scoured every single place of th...

Is Cash App safe? Yes, but there are certain drawbacks to using it, and several ways to keep your money secure

Cash App provides several security features, like Venmo and PayPal, but falls short in some areas when compared to a traditional bank account. SOPA Images/Getty Images Cash App is relatively safe due to its encrypted transactions, and the app has certain security features and protections. You should enable the app's security features and be aware of the potential for scams and fraudulent transactions. Are these Sacred Cows or Trojan Horses?

Lightspeed and Max Levchin bet on Balance to bring B2B payments into the digital world

Consumer payments is by no means a solved problem (I’ll trigger one hundred blockchain people if I say otherwise), but it sure as heck a pretty improved one. Checkout is a breeze with modern tools ranging from Stripe and PayPal to Fast and Rapyd to Apple and Google Pay. If you happen to need financing, on-the-spot lending platforms like Affirm, which recently debuted on NASDAQ and is currently valued at $26 billion, will extend that financing nearly instantaneously. Then you head over to B2B pay...

Game Over

I picked a name from the Game of Chance Basket this morning.  This one I renamed All Mixed Up, I am letting it go, because I don't feel all mixed up anymore. I will just weather the storm.  This helped. There will be an internet service guy in the house today. Even though the previous provider miraculously fixed the service they denied was not their problem. I don't much like being smeared, tricked or lied to. Switch-a-rooni. Ok. Time to mask up and keep our fingers crossed...

How to Improve Your Balance So You Don't Fall This Winter

Though it’s easy to label someone who frequently slips, trips, falls and/or knocks into things as being “clumsy,” there is usually more to the story than that. While it’s possible that their main problem is not looking where they’re going or paying attention to their surroundings, a large part of being steady on your…Read more...

How Leaders Delegate for a Better Work Life Balance

As a presenter, you likely hold some level of leadership in your organization. Leadership can come with the feeling of needing to “do it all.” True, there is certainly some merit to leaders knowing every facet of their industry. However, it’s important that a leader is not the sole member of their organization with the ability to do a large portion of the work. While teaching peers to own different facets of the business may take time and trust, it should save burn-out in the long run. The b...

Earth Yellow

The mellow yellow of the pomegranate dye is developing nicely after being heated and cooled for a few days. Adding more skins as I go, the walnut part of the dye becomes less influential. I've yet to find a source here, I am still using the concentrate made last year before I moved. The color seems to develop in sympathy with the drying leaves here. The days wiz by, my mind has slowed to balance them.

Finding Balance Between Confidence, Cynicism, and Criticism

It’s tough to be in the public eye. Every time you give a presentation, you open yourself up to some scary stuff. Things like public mistakes and criticism. That’s probably one reason why The National Institute of Mental Health reports that public speaking anxiety affects 73% of the population. Public speakers don’t just have to find courage. We have to find balance. Balance between both the confidence and the criticism that come from being in front of an audience. And we have to avoid becoming ...

Understanding Negative Space

When designing a slide, negative space is one of those elements that are critical to consider. But what is negative space, and how does it impact a slide? Understanding how the elements of spatial awareness impact user experience can be challenging. Ultimately, the trick is to naturally draw the eye toward an element of choice. There are three important factors to keep in mind when designing: 1- Teach your eye to see the negative space just as much as the subject matter. Let’s first define neg...

The Oura Ring is the personal health tracking device to beat in 2020

The Oura Ring has been getting a lot of attention lately because of its role in a number of COVID-19 studies, as well as its adoption by both the NBA and WNBA as a potential tool for helping prevent any outbreaks of the novel coronavirus as those two leagues get back to a regular schedule of play. Oura has released multiple generations of the Ring, which is a health and fitness tracker that reports a range of data, and I’ve spent the past month using one to see what all the fuss is about. The b...

How Downtime Makes You a Better Speaker

Repeat after me. It’s okay if I’m not available 24/7. One more time. It’s okay if I’m not available 24/7. Did you feel a bit of anxiety even just having to repeat that?  If so, you might need some more downtime in your life. Giving a speech can be a difficult task under the best circumstances. But if you are busy, distracted, and frazzled, it’s nearly impossible to deliver a winning presentation. That’s why we need to pursue balance. The kind that allows time for quiet thought and rest. Let’s lo...

Using this balance board at my stand-up desk is fun and maybe helping my core

I have been using this balance board to build core strength and awareness. I used to jump the hell out of my skin when my neighbor hollers over the fence and thru a window to get my attention as I work at my desk, in my home office. Now, when Alan gives a yell, I freak out and fall right down. That's cause I am standing on a balance board! Soon I will either be hurt badly or learn to steady my reactions enough so as not to fly across the god damn room when startled. I have the board set to t...

Wednesday Words

P ear. Pears. A Pair of Pears. At woods edge. A Pair is a positive thing. In my mind. In any form. Because it represents the birth of a pattern. And pattern is a form of natural order. And natural order takes a while to play out. I keep making these. Pairs. Pair-ings. Pare . Trim. Pared down, putting patchwork into the simplest perspective. 2 pieces. Connection. The beginning of bigger. But this simple balanced component, that moved away from the ones, then threes I usually work with, ta...

A ripple

A ripple at the crossroads. It's hot and we are not moving much. I seem to work up a sweat just thinking. Everything  is growing and it just seems like enough. But then, Equality weighs heavy. But then, a breeze kicked up.  I tried to catch that here . The hopefulness in that.

What I might be thinking

T hese two. Side by side. Similar is many ways.  Pieced. Radiating outward. Back and white squares. Color in the center.  But the black and white part. Different.  The black and white in the Nest of Days, based on a nine patch, and here, more black than white. Depending on the arrangement, could have been more white than black. The other cloth based on a 4 patch. Black and white are equal. Yes, I considered that.  Both of these began with simple patched centers. I will make the new cloth big...
