On Thursday, Lori Loughlin was freed from jail amidst an ongoing, headline-grabbing saga that sounds like it was ripped from a multi-episode arc of Law & Order: Criminal Intent.Actresses Felicity Huffman and Full House 's Loughlin are among 33 parents (totaling to a staggering 50 people in six states) who have been charged with allegedly paying bribes (approximately $25 million, all told) to get their children accepted into elite schools. It gets wilder with each detail: People were photoshoppin...

King tides offer look at the coast’s flooded future with sea-level rise

As dramatic as king tides can be when they flood the streets of Seal Beach or the Peninsula in Long Beach, an aerial perspective of waves battering the coast takes the drama to another level. From 1000 feet above, you can see surf pounding long sequences of seawalls and riprap rocks protecting homes, the ocean sometimes appearing to threaten structures despite the installed barriers. Where there are cliffs with no homes, the waves gnaw away at the bluffs, moving the beaches at their base farther...

The incredible shrinking yard and the great indoors

“Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies above … Don’t fence me in!”, sang Bing Crosby a thousand years ago. Those where the days when Americans yearned to go west, to spread our wings in the great outdoors. But according to the EPA, today the average American spends 93 percent of his or her life indoors. I have an excuse. I’m paler than a bottle of El Segundo Citra Ale and live in the West San Fernando Valley where it’s routinely 148 degrees in the shade. I risk sun stroke every time ...

Rohrabacher And Dems Scramble To Block A Common Foe In Key House Race

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CALIF. — As Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) delivered a somber tribute to fallen soldiers at a local Memorial Day event Monday, his old political ally turned primary foe fidgeted in his seat just 20 feet away, applauding as appropriate for the troops. Rohrabacher and former Orange County Chairman Scott Baugh (R), a onetime Rohrabacher acolyte, failed to greet one another at the small gathering, ignoring each other like estranged brothers at a family funeral. Baugh’s late entrance i...

Piece of United Airlines Plane Falls From Sky Onto Moving Car

On December 29, United Airlines flight UA809 flew from Orange County California to Denver. The Airbus A320 took off from runway 20R and climbed safely to its cruising altitude. 11 cities to explore by water

AS HUMANS, we’re too often confined to the ground. Our endless fascination with rivers and lakes, Ferris wheels and roller coasters, seas and oceans, parachutes and bungee cords — anything that gets us off our feet — stems from a sort of primal curiosity. It’s in these instances that we feel most alive. The hands-in-the-air, scream-like-you-mean-it kind of alive. So why should travel be any different? Why should we be restricted to seeing the world only from the earth it rests upon? Answer: We s...

21 California Shirts for Your Winter’s Day Dreams

Just when the east coast thought spring had sprung, a nasty winter storm pummeled a good portion of those northern states. Meanwhile, in Southern California, temperatures continue to push the 90 degree mark. As a Los Angeles resident, I don’t mean to rub our good weather in the east coast’s faces (well, maybe a little). We did have our fair share of crazy winter storms here. But lucky for us, the good weather days outweigh the bad. And beyond just the climate, California is a wonderful place to ...

5 Things to See in Anaheim Besides Disneyland

So there's this tourist attraction in Anaheim -- this theme park, kind of a huge deal when it first opened in 1955 and having expanded so hugely since then that it's pretty much the only thing that most people on earth know about, or visit in, that sprawling town whose fusiontastic name mates the Spanish Santa Ana with heim, German for "home." Founded in 1857 by fifty German wannabe vintners from San Francisco (weren't expecting that, were you?) who bought 1,165 acres at $2 each and original...
