Maryland’s Court of Appeals has reinstated Adnan Syed’s conviction in the murder of Hae Min Lee. The court's opinion was filed on a Friday afternoon, two days before a four-part HBO documentary about the case premieres. Weird. It was a 4-3 vote; there are two opinions there written for the majority, and a dissenting opinion. Chief Judge Barbera was among the dissenting — Justin Fenton (@justin_fenton) March 8, 2019 We will not give up. #FreeAdnan — Justin Brown (@CJBrownLaw) March 8, 2...

Missing in Venice: Harmony Korine’s ‘The Beach Bum,’ Amazon’s ‘Beautiful Boy’

Unveiling the Venice Film Festival’s glittery lineup Wednesday, Alberto Barbera said he got almost everything he wanted this year. Almost. Missing is Harmony Korine’s “The Beach Bum,” toplining Matthew McConaughey, who puts in what Barbera describes as an “Oscar-worthy” performance. But, the Venice artistic director said regretfully, Korine’s follow-up to “Spring Breakers,” produced by Anonymous Content, is set […]

Must-Visit Piemonte Wineries: Rizieri and Ceretto

Last fall, I traveled to several wine regions in Italy on vacation. I spent some time in the gorgeous Piemonte region, which is home to one of my favorite wines (Barolo). The trip was well planned, as the harvest was timely this year, the quintessential Nebbiolo grapes were at their peak, and it also happened to be the start of truffle season. (The weather was also, thankfully, perfect.) I spent a lot of time visiting vineyards, tasting, and learning more about the region and talking to winema...

Wine Stories: Mexico's Wine Renaissance

The Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico's center of fine wine production. The Mexican wine industry is simultaneously the birthplace of North American wine and its newest frontier. It boasts the oldest winery in the New World and it is one of the largest growers of grapes in the Americas, but paradoxically makes only a tiny 20 million liters of wine a year. By comparison, the United States produces three billion liters. Mexico has over 100,000 acres of vineyards, but most of these are devoted to brandy ...

The Italians Are Coming! Eight Films I Hope Will Make it to the Venice Film Festival

Venice has just unveiled the official poster by artist Simone Massi for the 73rd edition of the first and oldest film festival in the world. Yes, even older than Cannes. There, I've said it. The Venice International Film Festival, which will take place on the Lido from August 31st to September 10th, has also announced its opening film, La La Land, directed by Whiplash filmmaker Damien Chazelle and starring Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and of course, J.K. Simmons. Head of the Competition jury this ...

You Can Assess An Italian Restaurant Based On Its Wine

Italian wine—I can assure you—is good. Very good. However, you need to know what to choose, especially at a restaurant. Outside Italy, how can you interpret the wine list and pick a high-quality product? Cinzia Benzi, a friend and sommelier, but also the organizer of one of the most important food conferences in Italy (and the world), “Identità Golose” conceived by Paolo Marchi, gave me some valuable advice. THESE HAVE TO BE ON THE LIST Some wines that have now become brands and are mainly pro...

The Hills An Hour Outside Milan Are Completely Breathtaking

A big little secret: about 50 minutes from Milan by car, just after the bridge over the Po River and a short distance from Piacenza, the cities and their in nite suburbs end suddenly. And all at once a rolling, delightful and “real” countryside appears, inhabited and full of traditions, sometimes almost looking French, yet with a gloomy and almost medieval appearance. The horizon is dotted with castles, farms and hills, all of which part of the sweeping view of the valleys of Piacenza, all diff...

Everything You Wanted To Know About Barbera Wine

Barbera is the Italian wine that goes best with an American weekend, as it’s perfect for a backyard barbecue. Luca Cinacchi, Food and Beverage Manager of the Café Trussardi at La Scala in Milan tells us why. “The first thing you need to know about the Barbera variety is that its grapes are absolute tyrants. This means that the wine it produces is astringent and dries the palate, so in the past the Piedmontese would drink it with salami and fatty meat. That’s why today it’s perfect with a pork b...

Maryland Rule 1-311

An amendment to Rule 1-311 went into effect on January 1st.  The amendment requires that for all pleadings filed electronically with an electronic signature must include the attorney’s client protection fund number. I cannot find the amended version of this new rule online.  I highly doubt Judge Barbera is going to drive down to your office to compel compliance.  But it would be a smart idea to start complying now.  At some point, someone is going to argue that the pleading was not valid without...
