Dodgers catcher Keibert Ruiz struggling to find at-bats in majors and minors

ANAHEIM ― Keibert Ruiz is certainly in a good place for a 22-year-old. He’ll collect his 32nd day of major league service time Sunday, spread out over two seasons that have brought him no closer to either the number-1 or number-2 position on the Dodgers’ catching depth chart. That makes his ascension as a prospect, while steady, somewhat unusual. Impressively, Ruiz began his 2021 season the same way he began his 2020 debut ― with a home run in his first at-bat. The switch hitter from Venezuela t...

Clayton Kershaw exits early and Dodgers lose opener of doubleheader

The force was not strong in this one. Clayton Kershaw allowed four runs and threw 39 pitches in the first inning of Tuesday’s doubleheader and the Dodgers went on to lose 7-1 in the seven-inning game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The 39 pitches in the first inning were the most Kershaw has ever thrown in the opening inning of a start – and he didn’t stick around to throw any more. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts pulled Kershaw after one inning, the shortest start of Kershaw’s major-...

AOL Propelled Lawyers Onto the Internet

Verizon announced this morning that it is selling its media business – AOL and Yahoo – for $5 Billion. I couldn’t help but recall how AOL launched me from a practicing lawyer to a legal tech entrepreneur. The same was true for many other lawyers. AOL was the entry to the Internet in the 1990’s. Heck, we did not even call “it” the Internet or the World Wide Web (WWW). We called AOL an online community that we accessed via our home phone lines plugged into a disc we picked up at Barn...

Apple's App Store Had 78% Margin in 2019, Epic Expert Says

Apple's App Store had operating margins of almost 78% in fiscal year 2019, according to testimony from an Epic Games expert witness based on documents obtained from the iPhone maker. From a report: The figure comes from Ned Barnes, a financial and economics researcher, who said he obtained documents "prepared by Apple's Corporate Financial Planning and Analysis group and produced from the files of Apple CEO Tim Cook." Apple is disputing the accuracy of Barnes's calculations -- and urging a judge...

Shadow and Bone Review – Netflix Crushes High YA Fantasy

Based on the novel series of the same name, Shadow and Bone follows events in a richly developed world of magic and intrigue that breaks with industry standards to a degree by including both wizards and sharpshooters. Curious as that may seem in itself, the series also ultimately relates a wide swath of time, which sees some measure of the dilution of the power and import of magic as bows give way to early versions of firearms and then to repeating rifles. Moreover, the world is a genre-bending ...

Dodgers can’t hold a six-run lead, lose to Padres in 11 innings

LOS ANGELES ― The Dodgers can play another 50 games before they see the San Diego Padres again. That should come as a relief. The Dodgers lost their first series of 2021 by dropping three of four games to the Padres, capped by Sunday’s 8-7 loss in 11 innings before an announced sellout crowd of 15,316 at Dodger Stadium. Between four games here, and three in San Diego last week, the Padres managed to expose some potential weaknesses in the Dodgers’ arsenal. Often, the Dodgers found themselves nee...

Book Review: Scraping Pegs by Michael Stewart

Introduction It has been a while since my last appearance here on WBW. But when the opportunity to read and review Scraping Pegs appeared in my inbox, I had to jump at it. As a rider and the author of a book (don’t worry, no shameless plug for my book here), I wanted to give it a go. I’m always curious about how other authors get their thoughts down on paper. Yes, I know that sounds really old school. But I’m old, and that is still how I get the job done. A piece of paper and a pen seem to comp...

Is The CEO Who Saved Waterstones Turning Around Barnes & Noble, Too? Well, He Says So

To be fair, James Daunt was not at all as self-aggrandizing as that headline suggests when he spoke to the Independent Book Publishers Association last week. But he did say that the long-troubled chain has been hanging on despite the pandemic, and that B&N has used the lull in business to start making in earnest the changes that Daunt had introduced at Waterstones in the UK with so much success. – Publishers Weekly

The ongoing issues with sideloading books onto the nook is making me rethink it.

My wife really likes the nook. She started with the original nook with the color screen on the bottom and has worked her way up through all the various nook models through her current Glowlight 3. All the models have given me no end of hell with side-loading books. When the Glowlight 3 came out, I was thrilled that Barnes and Noble FINALLY dumped mtp and went with simple mass storage. But every time there's a software update, it seems to mess with side-loading. I own a Kindle and will side-load...

Dodgers’ first road trip of 2021 not limited to a hotel and a ballpark

When is a road trip not a road trip? If you were a major-league baseball player in 2020, any series of away games had to feel different. Players, coaches and other members of every team’s traveling party were instructed to “avoid leaving the club hotel for non-essential purposes” under last season’s COVID-19 protocols. This year, that rule was relaxed. Saturday was a clear, sunny and warm day in Denver. Dodgers catcher Will Smith didn’t take it for granted. “Denver’s a nice city. It’s always nic...

The conference is guaranteed its first champion since the Hall of Fame coach and the Cardinal won their last title in 1992. “I’m really proud of the Pac-12 to have tw...

“Dry lightning” prompts warning to stay out of ocean, lakes in Southern California

The National Weather Service issued a beach hazard statement to warn people in Southern California to stay out of the water due to “dry lightning” concerns.
