MY SPRING VISIT TO SNUG HARBOR FARM IN MAINE

A couple of weekends ago I was thrilled to have been invited to Snug Harbor Farm on the coast of Maine for a book signing. A gem of a specialty nursery. and worth a visit if you can make it - just an hour and a half north of Boston. We have some wonderful nurseries and sources for plants and accessories here in the Northeast but one, in particular, is quite extraordinary. Snug Harbor Farm located in Kennebunk Maine is one of the more special places worth a visit in you ever find yourself ...

Robotics startups won’t win without also incorporating AI, as Karakuri’s fundraise shows

The constant refrain in the tech world is that the world is about to be rocked by the combination of AI and robots. Therefore you’d think that startups that build either AI or robots would be onto a winner. However, there’s a serious misunderstanding going on. What is becoming clear is that the closer companies are to actual robotics, the only way to compete will be in genuinely transformational hardware. The era where a robotic arm was considered innovative is long over. Similarly, robotics as ...

Byredo Sundazed Is On My Summer Fragrance List!

Cotton Candy, juicy citrus notes, lemon, and sugar put it all together and you have Byredo Sundazed Eau de Parfum the Summer 2019 scent from the brand. Reviews are in and feelings are mixed but I’m all about trying out Byredo Sundazed for myself so I added it to my Summer Fragrance list! I went to Barney’s yesterday after brunch but didn’t see it on counters yet! I’m wildly curious about the notes of lemon and cotton candy how will that work? I’m hearing it’s sweet, with juicy lemon notes, ...

10 Easy Pieces: Italian-Designed Flatware

In the four months I spent traveling through Italy over the last couple years, I like to think I’ve become a micro-expert on Italian design. From the time spent in museums, historic buildings, modern additions, and the converted houses of iconic Italian designers, I can safely say that Italian design is sublimely idiosyncratic. It’s hard to explain in a few words (is there an Italian phrase for je ne sais quoi?), sometimes a little kooky, and with many different eras and faces, but there’s a thr...

Those Fuchsia Planes of the Now Defunct Wow Air Recall the Once Beloved ‘Jellybean Fleet’

The grounding of Icelandic budget airline Wow at the end of March didn't just end the days of another low-cost, no-frills carrier. It meant the demise (for better or worse) of those head-turning Airbus A320s with the fuchsia paint jobs. Americans hadn't seen anything that big and that fuchsia since Barney the Dinosaur. The sudden...

With his beaten up flag, a Valley veteran still tells the story of sacrifice

“Hey, that’s our flag up there – OUR FLAG!” Barney Leone shouted to his shipmates as he focused his binoculars on the most beautiful sight he had ever seen. Six battle-weary Marines using every last ounce of strength to raise the American flag on the summit of Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima 74 years ago. When the photograph of that moment hit the newspapers the next day, the entire nation got a collective case of the goose bumps. Our boys in the Pacific were winning. Barney was a 20-year-old motor ...

Love Barack Obama’s ‘44’ Bomber Jacket? Here's Where To Buy It

Michelle Obama isn't the only one who has liberated her sense of style, post-White House. While the former First Lady is sweeping all over the nation on her Becoming book tour, wearing Pyer Moss, Balenciaga, Cushnie, and Givenchy, her husband will not be outdone. On Wednesday, Barack Obama attended the UNC-Duke game in Durham, North Carolina in all black everything. Unsurprisingly, he caused a frenzy while he took in the game. And we understand why. The former POTUS is looking good. Like, really...

"But as John Stuart Mill argued, those who have never 'thrown themselves into the mental position of those who think differently … do not, in any proper sense of the word, know the doctrine which they themselves profess.' "

"It seems natural to conclude that the social role of philosophers is to help people think things through by confronting them with counterarguments to their current views. But since there’s no way to do that in a non-philosophical context without coming off as an arsehole, there’s no way for a philosopher to be a good citizen without having the courage to look like a bad one. Which brings us, with inexorable familiarity, to the figure of Socrates, who injected philosophical reason into the Athen...

Where to travel by zodiac sign

Maybe you think astrology is stupid. Maybe you think it’s a bunch of hippie-dippy junk science people use to excuse bad behavior. “Well you should have known I was going to was going to cheat on you, Janet. I’m a Scorpio!” Ok, well put that aside for a second. Because if you buy into astrology — if only for the time it takes to read your horoscope — it can be pretty entertaining. And sometimes, surprisingly accurate. Besides, even if you’re not into astrology, there’s a good chance someone yo...

The Value Of Collaboration At NowSourcing

Collaboration is an idea that is instilled in us in myths and legends we are told from childhood ― we’ve all imagined being part of King Arthur’s round table at playtime or had Barney’s song about doing our share during group clean-up time ringing in our ears as children. The idea is a simple one ― and a practice that probably helped the human race survive. With the burgeoning theory that behavioral memory can be passed down from generation to generation, working together is perhaps even encoded...

Trumpism hastens Orange County’s shift from red to blue

SACRAMENTO – During a 2012 magazine interview, actress Michelle Pfeiffer explained that “being from Orange County is in a lot of ways very much like being from the Midwest.” She was born in Santa Ana in 1958 and, as strange as her remarks might first seem, she has a point. The attitudes, culture and politics of the place, home to Richard Nixon and birthplace of the Ronald Reagan revolution, did indeed have a Midwestern feel, at least for many years. So many Midwesterners moved to Orange County t...

Solomon Islands – Reefs and war wrecks in a tropical island paradise

Solomon Islands was my first trip to a pacific island nation, which I was invited to visit as a guest of Solomon Islands Tourism. I must admit that I had to Google where Solomon Islands are, and if they are even an independent country (the Oceania region is my weakest link on travel trivia nights). They are indeed a country (as opposed to a territory), having achieved independence from Britain in 1978. They are a constitutional monarchy (like Australia), with Queen Elizabeth II being the head...

It’s Thanksgiving – Show some Girlfriend Gratitude

Call me ‘old-fashioned,’ but I remind people to say ‘Please.’ (And welcome the reminder myself if needed.) I prefer ‘You’re welcome‘ or ‘It is my pleasure,’ to ‘no problem’ when I say ‘Thank you.’ (Don’t even get me started on that one!) And, when I sneeze, I love when even strangers respond with ‘Bless you,’ not ‘Gesundheit.’ These are just common courtesies that show respect and politeness. At Thanksgiving, we have an opportunity to show this respect and appreciation through saying ‘Thank You’...
