How China’s Realme sold 50 million phones in just over 2 years

Starting a new phone brand in 2018 might seem too late in an already crowded market, but Sky Li was convinced that consumers between 18-25 years old were largely under-served — they needed something that was both affordable and cool. A few months after Li founded Realme in May that year, the smartphone company organized a product launch at a college campus in India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market. It brought its own production crew, built a makeshift stage and invited local rappers...

Gartner: 2020 device shipments to grow 0.9% to 2.16B thanks to 5G, before 2 further years of decline

The analysts at Gartner have published their annual global device forecast, and while 2020 looks like it may be partly sunny, get ready for more showers and poor weather ahead. The analysts predict that a bump from new 5G technology will lead to total shipments of 2.16 billion units — devices that include PCs, mobile handsets, watches, and all sizes of computing devices in between — working out to a rise of 0.9% compared to 2019. That’s a modest reversal after what was a rough year for hardware ...

Sub-brands are the new weapon in China’s smartphone war

One of China’s top smartphone brands Vivo appears to have joined its fellows Oppo, Huawei and Xiaomi in setting up a new sub-brand as a softening market and heightened competition at home drive players to venture upon their original reach. A new smartphone brand called iQoo made its debut on Weibo, China’s answer to Twitter, on Tuesday by greeting in English: “Hello, this is iQoo.” It also playfully encouraged people to guess how its name is pronounced, as the spelling doesn’t resonate with e...

Finishing the show strong with Friday coverage from SEMA #TENSEMA17

We’ve reached the end of the 2017 SEMA show, and what an event it has been. If this year’s show is any indication, 2018 is going to be a strong year for the automotive aftermarket. We started roaming the rows of parts on Tuesday, and since we’ve arrived at the end of the show, we found even more cars and parts to bring before you. The big news out of ProCharger at SEMA was that many of its supercharger kits received C.A.R.B. E.O. certification, which makes them 50-state legal. Among the kits...

China’s smartphone market is dominated by companies you’ve probably never heard of

Some combination of Samsung and Apple lead many major smartphone markets, but in the largest, China, local players dominate. Recent data from Counterpoint Research has reinforced that: As this chart from Statista shows, Chinese firms Huawei and BBK Electronics (through its Oppo and Vivo brands) shipped the most phones this past quarter, a good ways ahead of Apple and Samsung. That said, it’s important to remember that market share isn’t the same as profits. While Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo are way u...
