‘The Science Has Worked’ For Bryson DeChambeau, Says Dottie Pepper

(CBSDFW.COM) — Bryson DeChambeau returned from the PGA Tour’s coronavirus hiatus 20 pounds heavier. The difference was noticeable as he walked the course at Colonial. The extra muscle also showed itself off the tee, where the 240-pound Modesto, California native led the Charles Schwab Challenge field in driving. >>STREAM: RBC Heritage To be precise, DeChambeau dominated the field in driving, gaining over seven strokes off the tee. Xander Schauffele, the runner-up in the category, picked up just ...

‘Going To Be A Very Different Atmosphere,’ Says Nick Faldo On Charles Schwab Challenge

(CBS DFW/CBS Local) — The sports world welcomes back golf, and just in time. The PGA Tour returns to action tomorrow with the Charles Schwab Challenge, three months after suspending the Players Championship and the season in light of the coronavirus. Fans, who were on hand for the first and only round of the 2020 Players, will not be in attendance at Colonial Country Club. But most of the PGA Tour’s best players will be teeing off for what promises to be a unique and, at times, surreal viewing e...

Colonial Country Club: Profile Of Hogan’s Alley, Home Of The Horrible Horseshoe

(CBS DFW/CBS Local) — Colonial Country Club, Fort Worth, Texas’s gem of a course, holds a distinct honor. It hosts the longest-running PGA Tour event to take place at the same site, majors aside. This year Colonial will enjoy another distinction, when the Tour returns to action from its three-month, COVID-19-induced hiatus. The event, which changed its name to the Charles Schwab Challenge last year, dates back 74 years. In 1946, Ben Hogan shot 1-under par to win the first by one stroke. Hogan tr...

Tour Edge and the Battle of Attrition

Consistently turning a profit in golf equipment business is no small achievement. In fact, you probably have a better chance of playing Cypress Point than making a fortune selling clubs and balls. And that’s before any consideration for the wholly unpredictable current economic environment. So why do some companies make it big while others become dust in the wind? Is it timing? Luck? Performance? Differentiation? Adaptability? Leadership? Answer: “D.” All of the above. Larger companies tend to h...

How COVID-19 Is Impacting Golf’s Big Brands

“It’s crazy, crazy times.” “Chaos.” “It’s f’n nuts.” Consider those summary thoughts from a few of our contacts inside medium to large golf equipment companies as they come to terms with COVID-19. It’s not any kind of a stretch to say they speak for everyone. Let’s not mince words. The impact of COVID-19 on the golf equipment industry’s biggest players will be brutal. It already is and the longer it drags, the worse it’s going to get. While some have taken aggressive action, some believe the nex...

COVID-19 and Golf’s Direct-To-Consumer Business

While there are far, far graver concerns today than the state of the golf industry, this is a golf blog so let’s examine how COVID-19 is affecting different parts of the business. This will be a snapshot of a few members of the Direct-To-Consumer (DTC) end of the business. DTC is in a unique position in that it doesn’t rely on the retail channel for its business. It does, however, rely on people actually playing golf. And with most courses shut down, we talked with the owners/CEOs of five DTC co...

Ben Hogan GS53 Driver – (4) Testers Wanted

So just how far do you think your new driver is going to go? Every year, the new drivers keep coming, and we golfers keep buying. Are they worth it? Are there any hidden gems and great values to be had? The answers are maybe, and most definitely. You may think of Ben Hogan Golf is primarily an iron company, and you’d be right. First Set of Golf Clubs: Recalling Lloyd Mangrum Irons, Lady Ben Hogans and More

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST SET of golf clubs? I've spent part of the morning trying to answer that question for myself. I started playing golf at the age of 12 at Desert Aire Golf Course, a public 9-hole course in Palmdale, California. Lloyd Mangrum Golfcraft Irons I'm pretty certain my first full set of golf clubs included a used set of Lloyd Mangrum irons. They had black shafts made of glass. After doing some research, I've determined the model name was Golfcraft (see photo). ...

First Look: Ben Hogan Icon Irons

The words Ben Hogan and Icon go together like velvety and smooth. Hogan was arguably the greatest ball striker ever and damned near every forged iron his company produced was, well, iconic. The circa-1999 Apex blade may have been the most iconic. They, along with the Apex Plus, were perhaps the last great iron sets released by the original Hogan Co. Sub70 Golf

How long has Sub70 owner Jason Hiland been selling golf gear online? Well, if you were alive, you were either doing the Macarena, playing with your new Tickle Me Elmo, watching Season Three of Friends, or learning the names of the first 50 Pokemon. The worldwide web hosted fewer than 100,000 websites in 1996, and Hiland’s value-priced component/clone company Diamond Tour Golf was one of them. Golf Swing Video: A Shorter Backswing Can Bring More Consistency and Power

Symptom: Erratic shots, losing your balance as you swing, a golf backswing that is too long, not reliable or powerful, and doesn’t hold up under pressure or from round to round. People seldom tell you that you need a shorter backswing, but that is exactly what you need. Description: Slow down and use a shorter backswing for more consistency. Why it works: Let’s start with the basics:  the purpose of the backswing is to coil the body and set the club in position for a powerful downswing. You don’...
