Robotics, AR and VR are poised to reshape healthcare, starting in the operating room

About 20 years ago, a medical device startup called Intuitive Surgical debuted the da Vinci robot and changed surgical practices in operating rooms across the United States. The da Vinci ushered in the first age of robotic-assisted surgical procedures with a promise of greater accuracy and quicker recovery times for patients undergoing certain laparoscopic surgeries.  For a time, it was largely alone in the market. It has skyrocketed in value since 2000, when the stock first debuted on public...

Recap of the California Assembly Hearing on the California Consumer Privacy Act

Yesterday, the California Assembly Committee on Privacy and Consumer Protection held a hearing on the California Consumer Privacy Act. I believe this is the first legislative hearing ever on the law. The initial passage took place in a frenetic week, too short to notice a hearing; and I don’t believe there was a hearing for the technical amendments bill. About 100 people attended. Legislator attendance was so-so. Only 3 legislators stayed most of the time; and by the end, only Rep. Chau (the ch...

Trump Denies Trying To Interfere In Cohen Probe: ‘I Don’t Know Who Gave You That’

President Donald Trump denied reporting from the New York Times Tuesday that he called then-acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker to try to install a Trump ally at the head of the Michael Cohen probe. “No, not at all,” he told reporters Tuesday when asked if he had done that. “I don’t know who gave you that. That’s more fake news.” He continued to talk about the abundance of fake news circulating and waxed lyrical about Whitaker’s person, saying that he is owed “a lot of thanks by our nation....

This book offers a look at several generations of LA’s coolest figures

Tosh Berman was one of the first people I met when I moved to Los Angeles. We worked together at Book Soup in West Hollywood and at one point we carpooled together from Silver Lake. Or rather, I drove us since Tosh didn’t drive. Tosh seemed like a character out of a play, with his slicked-back hair, librarian glasses, striped shirts, and socks that made a statement, back before we had considered that socks on adult men could make a statement. Tosh’s shotgun small talk felt more like dialogue, no...

Bill Gates-backed Vicarious Surgical adds a virtual reality twist to robots in the operating room

In an operating room in rural Idaho, doctors prep a patient for surgery. They make a tiny, thumb-sized incision into the patient and insert a small robot while across the country a surgeon puts on a virtual reality headset, grabs their controllers, and prepares to operate. While this scene may seem like science fiction now, a Charlestown, Mass.-based startup called Vicarious Surgical, is developing the technology to make that vision a reality. The company’s co-founders, Adam Sachs and Sammy Khal...

7 True Stories to Add to Your Reading Wish List

Each month I look forward to seeing the variety of true stories that come to my attention. While I love nonfiction, I don't read everything. At the top of my list are biography, history, and food and cooking. I also read across a broad range of science books as well as true crime. I'm much pickier when it comes to memoirs and autobiography, though both can be found on my bookshelves. What's your favorite nonfiction? Here are 7 nonfiction titles that are on my February reading list. They sp...

Return On Courage

COURAGE is what gets you from here to there. But it’s not courage or risk. It’s courage and risk. They work together. “Those who are risk-averse are inadvertently courage-adverse,” says Ryan Berman author of Return on Courage. It is a balancing act. “If courage is the accelerator, then risk is the brake pedal. You need them both to drive a car, but you can’t press them at the same time or the car won’t work.” So how hard should you hit the gas? How important is it that you change? Why courage?...

The Four Principles of Corporate Courage

It Takes a Team to Build a Courage Brand By Ryan Berman One of the joys about living on the service side of business is that you’re granted exposure to dozens of diverse industries. Where most go deep into one vertical, I’ve been fortunate to experience breadth. One day I’m sitting in a meeting with Hilton or Caesars Entertainment and, the next, I’m on the phone with a leader at Aetna. From hospitality to life inside a hospital, one of the key behind-the-scenes insights I’ve discovered is that b...
