Enjoy The Moment

If there's one thing to be said about the Wings this season, it's that they're fun to watch again. Not boring, not slow and old, and not the inevitable feeling of dread that we've all come to know in the last few seasons. These games are actually entertaining, and exciting.  Larkin is back in the lineup tonight, T-Bert is on fire, and, the youngsters are really putting on a good showing so far. Yes, there is plenty of room for improvement, and that will come in time, but for...

One Game In

There are many positives to take from the Wings first outing this season. Six goals scored, plenty of action, fast paced. T-Bert had a great game. D-Boss scored the first goal of the season to get it started, then was nailed from behind by a nasty, dirt bag hit. The youngsters looked very good as well. We all know what happened after Larkin got hit so no need to go into that. That being said, the Wings are only one game in, in a very long season which Wings fans hope will be very entertaini...

10 Amazing Musicals That Deserve Movie Adaptations

2021 has been a banner year for film musicals, with movies that tell original stories, adapt famous Broadway classics, and reimagine beloved favorites from new perspectives. Steven Spielberg's upcoming adaptation of "West Side Story" isn't the first time that Stephen Sondheim's tragic love story has been adapted to the big screen, as the beloved 1961 feature from Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise is a best picture-winning classic in its own right. However, Spielberg and screenwriter Tony Kushner lo...

Jeff Blashill Likes The Look Of The Top Line

from Ansar Khan of Mlive, Lucas Raymond impressed enough during the preseason to apparently earn not only a place on the Detroit Red Wings’ opening-night roster, but also a spot on the top line. Look familiar?

Part of this photo is this week's Image of the Week (in the sidebar to the right). Can you tell I've run out of fresh pictures again? I don't know what wildflower this is, but it's blooming all around right now. If anyone knows what these are, I'd appreciate a comment. We had some thunder and lightning over night, but no rain. The storm moved by us to the west and north. Bert sauntered in around 02h30 this morning, about the same time that the storm was moving off. And once again, thankfully, ...

Fading color

These are the hortensias (hydrangeas) that I grew from cuttings many years ago. There were four, but the other two did not survive in their location on the other side of the garage door. Now we have an aucuba there. It's holding on, but not thriving. There's still a little color left in the hydrangea flowers, but it's fading fast. When the leaves fall, it will be time to prune the stems back for the winter. Hydrangeas under the garage window. If you look closely, you can see a board leaning up...

Shorts and tee-shirts

It's happening. Summer is back. Sun. Dry days. High temperatures in the 80sF. I grilled hamburgers for lunch on Friday. And I'm enjoying wearing shorts again. We'll see how long it lasts. Grapes to the right, corn on the left (in the back). A recent sunrise. Bert stayed out last night until almost three in the morning. I woke up around 23h30 thinking I felt him walk across my legs (which he does frequently). I must have been dreaming because he was not at all there. Then I tossed and turned an...

Planeur

I used to see a lot of planeurs (gliders or sailplanes) in the sky above our neighborhood each summer. Since the pandemic, of course, none. Same for hot-air balloons, except I did see one or two in the distance this past spring. The gliders fly in giant circles around warm thermals, sometimes four or five at a time. It's like a silent ballet in the sky. Un planeur, 2006. Bert stayed out until about ten-thirty last night. When he came in, he had another mouse. Mmmmm. Tasty. [Author: wcs]

Green neck

This is un canard colvert (green necked duck), what English speakers call a mallard duck. It's a male with its characteristic bright coloration. The female is more mottled, with no green neck or white collar. In recent years, we've seen breeding pairs on the little pond outside our back gate. They nest on the ground under some shrubs at the edge of the water. The only ducklings I've seen in that time are two that Bert brought home. I'm sure the other neighborhood cats and the ducklings' natural ...

That darned cat

Bert woke me up last night just after eleven. Meow, meow! I thought he wanted kibble, so I got up and went downstairs to put his bowl down. He went further downstairs to the ground floor. I went back upstairs to bed. A few minutes later, he was back in the loft. Meow, meow! He was insistent. I realized he wanted, or needed, to go outside. Nothing to do with this post. Public benches, Mennetou-sur-Cher, May 2006. Out of bed again, down two flights, and I opened his window. He went out like a sh...

Health Updates And More

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News, Larkin (neck) and Bertuzzi (back surgery) have begun light skating, but coach Jeff Blashill, also at Monday's event, isn't saying for sure the two forwards will be ready to begin training camp. Being green

It's easy, so far this summer. The reason? Rain. We're having a break right now, but I'm not sure how long it will last. I got the small electric rototiller out yesterday and started attacking the weeds in the vegetable garden. I made good progress with a little more to do today. I also sliced my new soaker hose with the tiller blades, but was able to repair it with some parts from the connector kit. The grass in the south forty is ready to be cut again. The rest of the yard is not far behind. ...

Hydrangea with ramp

I need to take some new photos. These are two of the hydrangeas that I grew from cuttings many years ago. The other two, planted on the other side of the garage door, died last year. I probably didn't water them enough. The window goes into the garage and the plank is Bert's ramp in. He comes and goes as he pleases until I lock him indoors at night. Of course, he has to come in around bedtime for that. It's not elegant, but it works. When the days are long in summer, the sun doesn't set until ...

British character actor Bob Hoskins has been remembered for “playing Americans better than Americans,” as USA Today wrote when Hoskins passed away in 2014.
