Using Google for Education tools to create community at Lundavra Primary

Editor’s note: Today’s post is by Harriet Ogilvie, a teacher at Lundavra Primary School in Fort William, Scotland. Harriet was one of the many teachers who recently joined us at BETT 2019 to share stories about using technology that engages students and transforms learning. Below, Harriet explains how she and other Lundavra teachers help students build communication skills and create online portfolios using G Suite for Education. At Lundavra Primary School, students and teachers encourage par...

Change, Learning Technologies, and the future

Daniel Susskind - Photo by Steve Wheeler All change! Attending Learning Technologies in a completely new, yet strangely familiar venue was quite an experience. It was akin to welcoming an old friend to live in your own home and watching them struggle to work out where the coffee is stored, and how the dodgy 'fridge door works. London ExCel has long been the home of the BETT Show, which I have attended on many occasions, but in the last few days it has also been the home of Learning Te...

March of the robots

Photo by Steve Wheeler Anyone who has ever attended the BETT Show will tell you it is vast, chaotic and very commercial. The latter is inevitable, because BETT is a free-entry event, and someone has to pay to make sure the four day education show happens. BETT was bigger than ever this year, with more vendors and more visitors, overspilling into an additional space across the corridor from the usual trade show venue. As I wandered around the show this year, skilfully sidestepping the min...

Microsoft doubles down on education with cheap laptops and a $40 Surface pen

Microsoft may be king when it comes to mainstream PCs, but it’s no secret Google has built a commanding lead selling devices meant for education in the US. So today at the BETT education conference, Microsoft and its partners (Dell, Acer, Lenovo) are announcing seven inexpensive laptops to tackle the onslaught of equally-cheap Chromebooks. The starting prices for the laptops range from $189 to $319, including three convertibles. The most interesting of these is probably the updated Lenovo 300e 2...

Microsoft’s Code Jumper makes programming physical for children with visual impairments

Microsoft just unloaded a whole bunch of news in time for the BETT education show. The most interesting bit of the bunch, however, is probably Code Jumper. The tethered hardware device is design to teach children who are blind or have otherwise impaired vision how to code. The device is a continuation of Project Torino, which the company announced back in early 2017. Microsoft’s Cambridge, U.K. lab designed a “physical programming language,” which tasks kids with building programs by connect...

My Live School

Photo by Ilmicrofono Oggiono on Flickr It was heart-warming to see so many passionate educators at the recent BETT Show in London. Thousands of teachers from all sectors descended on the Excel Centre last week to view the latest in learning technology, hear from key speakers in the field of education, and of course, to connect and reconnect with others of like mind. It is arguably the latter that draws the majority of teachers to BETT year after year. The BETT TeachMeet, organised by Drew...

After notebooks, Google is reportedly bringing Chrome OS to tablets

Google’s browser-focused Chrome OS has been available on notebooks and desktops for a while now – and it looks like we’ll soon see the platform arrive on tablets. Chrome Unboxed spotted a tweet from an attendee at the BETT education expo in London showing an Acer tablet running Chrome OS. Attendee Alister Payne, who shared the photo, hinted that this might be aimed at young students in grades 1, 2, and 3. The device itself appears to be a standard-looking model with thick bezels and a front-faci...
