beverly cleary, rest in peace, and thank you

Beverly Cleary, who died last week at the astounding age of 104, was a pivotal figure in the world of children's literature. Her books are treasures; her influence can scarcely be measured.Cleary was one of the first authors to feature young characters who were realistically imperfect. If she was not the first, then certainly she was the first popular, widely read writer who, as The Atlantic put it, "saw children as they are". Before Henry Huggins and Ramona, before Otis and Ellen and Ralph S. ...

Opinion: Beverly Cleary's Ramona is a force for all us beautiful pests

The first time I realized that I preferred to wear bruised knees under long, athletic shorts -- and not skirts and dresses -- I was in third grade. I liked soccer, hated ballet and wasn't afraid to speak my mind, even if it was to an adult. Some might have considered me a pest.

How Did This Get Made: A Conversation With Ron Underwood, Director of ‘Tremors,’ ‘City Slickers,’ and ‘The Adventures of Pluto Nash’

A few months ago, when I resumed writing this column for How Did This Get Made? , I began by making a wish list of filmmakers who I’d been wanting to speak with for years. And one of the people at the top of that list was the subject of today’s piece: Ron Underwood.  Even if you don’t know the name “Ron Underwood,” you’ve probably seen some of his work. Maybe it was when you were a kid. Maybe in school you were shown one of his sweet-natured stop-motion educational films. Films like Court...

SO LATE SO SOON: fun, genre-celebrating SF for young readers (of all ages!)

[Harry Tynan posts on our forums as Moose Malloy. Earlier this week, he messaged me about his fun, self-published kid's book, written as a series of bedtime stories for his kid (a tradition I'm very fond of -- it's the origin story of The Borribles!). The book is so much fun that I invited him to write a short introduction and choose a excerpt for your edification. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did! -Cory] The great Umberto Eco once wrote, in a about Casablanca, that "Two clichés make us la...
